Event Eight.

To thee I'll return, overburdened with care;
The heart's dearest solace will smile on me there.
No more from the cottage again will I roam,
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.

he Town is quiet this week. No sudden quests on the forum post, no roars of werewolves in the distance... just peaceful, peaceful quiet. Of course, it's hot as hell right now, but that aside, it's pretty pleasant. You probably don't want to wander around the Town right now, but...

Naturally, now's when the Town is going to start thoroughly encouraging you to do just that.

You do want to find your doorway back home, don't you?

Better get searching! And don't mind the other worlds you might end up stumbling into first.

Welcome to Awash's eighth event log, everyone! Further information on this event can be found here at the OOC post.

You are welcome to start your own posts or logs for this event as well. If there are any questions, please ask them here. Thank you!

[Maribelle raises an eyebrow, very confused. The town has been lovely, sort of, but this is wildly beyond her.]

These are... games?

[ She nods ]

Yes. A lot of them you just play by yourself, I think, but there are some that you can play with others. [ Elizabeth laughs a little ] They're definitely all competitive though, if that's okay.

Well, I'm afraid right now you'd have the edge. This type of machinery is all foreign to me.

I don't suppose you'd be willing to teach me a thing or two?

[personal profile] extrapolating 2018-07-24 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, don't worry. I've never actually played one either beyond a few minutes...

[ They didn't exactly have time while running through, all things considered. But still, she nods. ]

But I can definitely teach you the basics. From there, we'll just be learning together.

Excellent.

[A playful smirk.]

But once we have our footing... don't expect me to show you any mercy.

[ That's an ideal response, and though Elizabeth grins, it's absolutely playful and wry ]

I'd hope you wouldn't! It wouldn't be as fun otherwise.

[ They're both competitive, and that's exactly what she was hoping for. Elizabeth trots over to a set of the machines. They're all the same game, which is a ye olde version of Whack-a-Mole. Elizabeth picks up the soft mallet and looks at it, then peers into the holes. ]

The way this one works... I think things pop out of the holes, and you're just supposed to hit as many as you can? I only saw it briefly, but that's what a little boy seemed to be doing.

That doesn't seem to be terribly complicated.

[So she comes to the one next to it, picking up her own mallet.]

How do we start?

Luckily, it looks like it still thinks it's Founder's Day or whatever, so we don't have to pay, so...

[ Elizabeth reaches forward to press a simple silver button that matches the decor of the entire box. It whirls to life with music-box style music and lights. It sings a little "Ready...?" and at the beat of the music, a "GO!".

Out the "moles" start to pop, though of course for a city in the sky, it's a little different. Rather than rodents, its seagulls, apparently? They must be a similar kind of pest. And once the game starts, Elizabeth starts to thwack them with the soft mallet, though it does get more difficult as the quick game continues. ]

[She's about to ask what the hell Founder's Day is, but then IT'S GAME TIME -

She begins whacking as hard and fast as she can...
]

Th-this is ... a little harder than it sounded!

[personal profile] extrapolating 2018-07-30 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding!

[ But she laughs, since this is fun. She'd only seen the beginning of a game when she passed through, so seeing now how multiple pop up at once, how it's impossible to actually hit all of them, she gets the challenge. ]

I don't think you can even hit them all!
troubadamsel: (I'm By Your Side!)

[personal profile] troubadamsel 2018-07-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
If you say that, then of course you won't! You must believe in yourself!

[this... probably isn't the place for inspiring pep talks]

[ Maybe not, but you know what? She'll take it. It's such an earnest sentiment that Elizabeth is definitely a little surprised, but she's also charmed by it. And with that, she'll focus on her task at hand instead of laughing and talking through it.

The game isn't very long, so the music tapers off with a happy trill, and all of the moles retreat into their holes with the sound of turning gears. A placard on the machine shows a score of 16, which is decent, but definitely not all of them. Elizabeth giggles as she stands back, then waits to see how Maribelle does with her own game. ]
troubadamsel: (En Garde!)

[personal profile] troubadamsel 2018-07-31 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[And Maribelle's is...

7.
]

What?! That's all?! This machine must be broken, I definitely got far more than that!

[she absolutely did not.]

[personal profile] extrapolating 2018-08-02 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ At least Elizabeth isn't the kind of person to point it out, though she was also so occupied with her own game that she really wouldn't notice anyways... She turns the mallet in her hands, then smiles as she nods to the machine. ]

Well, again? We know how it works now, so we might be able to beat it.
troubadamsel: (En Garde!)

[personal profile] troubadamsel 2018-08-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, again! This time, this blasted machine had better get it right!

[this might be a long day]

[personal profile] extrapolating 2018-08-07 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She laughs good-naturedly, but nods. She presses the button again, and the game winds up and restarts its (now a bit more annoying melody) as the targets again pop up out of the holes. Elizabeth's score once it finishes actually isn't much better at 18, but she seems pretty satisfied with it. ]

That's really not as simple as it looks... I wonder if anyone has ever gotten a perfect score?
troubadamsel: (Look At This Weakling!)

[personal profile] troubadamsel 2018-08-07 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Somehow, Maribelle's score got LOWER.]

No one! No one has ever gotten a perfect score on this blasted thing, I refuse to believe it!
