Food Party

Be it one heard of the feast from the forum, by word of mouth, or just got drawn to the commotion, finding the feast wasn't hard to do. A little house in Ruga had all of the furniture moved outside, sans some tables and chairs-- some probably even from other empty houses to make a little dining area. "Little" being the keyword, but it wasn't like they had restaurant venues to work with. At least there was someplace to sit, right? Assuming it didn't get too popular, of course, there was always the chance of sitting outside. It was a nice day today, after all!

I. Mingle

Looks like it'll be a while before anyone's getting any food, but hey! There sure are people around here to hang out with! Besides, they did mention the chefs could use some company too, right? Or one can decide to be that weird kid at a party that holds their cup of punch in the corner and sips occasionally. Only they didn't have punch-- just water. Sorry, weird kid.

II. Cooking

Welcome to the kitchen! It had a completely different atmosphere here-- tables filled with food that was meant to be chopped or cooked or both. And, of course, the two (for now) diligent cooks working with old stoves. They're open to helping hands, or maybe just a little conversation? How about a bit of influence on what to cook, or maybe being a taste tester? Maybe one might even bring them something else to cook?

III. Feast

While some may argue that this didn't even come close to a feast, it was clear that the most was definitely made from what they had. Could anyone really complain in their situation? Deer meat, apples, potatoes, peppers, water... This may well have been a luxury at this point. Besides, show a little respect for the chefs! They worked hard on this.

Oh, no need to apologize! It was a lot of work... [Even he's a bit sore from all the chopping and stirring that had to be done.]

Want me to grab you something to eat? There's still a lot left, though...not sure for how much longer.

[A few people are already going for seconds, it seems. He's contemplating getting another bowl too.]

[It really is something else, preparing food for that many people. Even Rin is feeling a faint ache in his joints.

He nods and stretches, his fluffy tail curling into a spiral at his side.]

Mmm yeah, tha'd be great.

[He beams brightly at that, nodding his head.]

What would you like? [Since he doesn't know what Rin likes, unless he's told to just surprise Rin.]

The rice bowls are pretty amazing.

[Rin isn't picky. He has a favorite, but he knows he won't be indulging in Sukiyaki any time soon here. It was a once in a while thing back home, too.]

Yeah, that sounds good!

Got it! [He nods before leaving. A few minutes later he returns with two big bowls--a 4th helping of rice and eggs for himself and the same thing for Rin.]

Here you go.

[Once Rin takes the offered bowl he takes a seat on the floor nearby, wasting no time in digging into the food again.]

Mmmm!!! I didn't think I could miss real food this much. [He says this with his mouth full and between bites of course.]

[Aw hell yeah. Finally food! He didn't even realize how hungry he was until now!

He takes a big bite himself, looking wonderfully content complete with a tail wag.]

Man, when I first got here and found out about the gray food I was so mad! I think I cried a little.

[pause]

N-not that I'm like a big crier or anything!

[Rin you sob hysterically at romance manga...]

Oh, me too! [About the food or the crying, he doesn't say. Perhaps both. He's not really a crier, but...well, after so long of the equivalent of ash you can't blame him for it.]

I tolerated it, but...it was hard, I'll admit.

I wonder why they only have taste when there's color...

[Bad tasting food is really bad, okay! It's totally worthy of a shed tear or two.]

Well, if somethin' doesn't have color it doesn't really have... life, does it?

[He furrows his brow at that, pausing in his eating as he considers.]

Hm...maybe? But that wouldn't make sense with food. The stuff we eat isn't alive... [One would hope.]

So, if that were true, wouldn't something like fruit have color until you take it from its tree? Or a flower until you pick it. Even animals.

Yeah it is! I mean, it was. Everythin' comes from somewhere and people eat what, mostly plants and meat, both came from things that had to be alive and grow before we could make 'em in to food.

And it's not like livin' things just suddenly stop bein' colorful when they die. Hell even rottin' bodies still have color.

[Rin that's gross...]

[The outburst has his eyes widening, unexpected as it is.]

Oh, no, I know that! That's not what I meant. I meant... [He frowns as he tries to consider how to better convey it.] I meant that, when something becomes food, it has to stop being alive, right? It was alive, yes, but it can't be when we eat it.

So, um, it's like...like the animals here, you know? The ones that have color don't lose it when they die. If the color or lack thereof were connected with life, wouldn't it make more sense for things to have color until they die?

[Yes, that was gross Rin, but you're also not entirely wrong. Corpses do still have color...just less of it than still living humans.]

Oh. Uh. ... I guess?

[Rin has hit the inevitable brick wall of his limited intelligence. He can argue some points but he's really not equipped for a long term debate, especially about the status and meaning of color in living and dead things.]

... man this got confusin'.

[But he's on a roll now, so he keeps rambling.]

There's also the fact some things that have color aren't the color you'd expect them to be. It could be some kind of mutation, maybe...or a natural difference?

[Now he notices Rin's kinda spacing out and laughs nervously.]

Sorry. Guess some mysteries won't be solved quite so easily.

[Since he's done eating now, he moves to stand up.]

Phew, man I'm stuffed...this was really good. Thanks for all your hard work, Rin! [He smiles.]

Will you cook for the town like this again? I can help next time!

I'unno. Maybe? Depends on what we've got on hand and maybe if there's some other events or somethin'. Seems like people here are pretty interested in putting get togethers on.

[Not that he minds. It does help with that whole being social thing.]
