t's pretty dark and miserable down in the well. The cavernous area feels much larger than a well should be, bodies milling about in the darkness and knee deep, frigid water. So you're here -- and you're not alone, and the only way out appears to be the thin circle of sunlight from above, the opening of the well. (And elsewhere, in the Town, everyone's waking up to gifts of various usefulness, but hopefully they remember to check the well today even so!) What now? Welcome to Awash's tenth event log, and the intro log for this month, everyone! All new characters have found themselves waking in the well in the middle of the Town. ( he likes you. why do you have to point it out so obviously, dex. ain't nobody wants to hear that stuff or talk about feelings. but guren's not here right now to see him talk about feelings so he guesses it's not the worst possible situation ever. this guy's a stranger, but he seems trustworthy. and if guren likes him enough to tell him he likes yuu--that says a lot, too. )

( moments before his face scrunches up, brows furrowing. )

[ oh no, he’s a lot like guren. dextera covers his mouth even though the laugh is quiet and voiceless, and then he drops away his hand to excitedly sign in response.

he feels better about letting yuu run wild now, but he’s absolutely going to tell guren what yuu said. he’s a tattle-tale. ]

What are you looking for?

( wow rude, why would you do this to him. the laugh earns him flushed cheeks; yuu has the gall to look embarrassed, at least. )

My laptop? Guren said it's important so I'm looking for it, but I have no idea where it is, or what it'd look like.

[ it is important. there’s not much yuu can do without it. though plenty of people have managed to coast by with barely using it or not touching it at all, it’s not exactly an easy endeavor. ]

This size.

[ dextera makes the rough shape of it with his hands, both open and closed for posterity. ]

It’s in… “your house.”

[ he spells it out for emphasis. ]

But I don't have a house.

( squinting hard because it's now donning on him how weird it is he can read hand signs. )

Did I forget I learned another language? Weird.

[ it’s the town, honestly! unless yuu has just always been familiar with italian sign language, but the chances of that are painfully low. ]

This town is mysterious. But you do have a house. [ a beat. ] Somewhere.

( yuu knows bits and pieces of latin, enough japanese to speak fluently even if his ability to read it is. lacking. definitely not italian though. how weird. )

I was just going to take over Guren's house.

[ okay, well, he can do that, but not until he finds his laptop. dextera is used to herding chickens, and doing it with yuu isn’t really that different. he just needs a goal. ]

Once you get your laptop. Then you can.

[ is this what being a mom is like? ]

( congrats on becoming a mom, dextera. )

Sounds like a plan, Dextira. ( with a grin on his face, even. he offers out a hand, palm up. )

Wanna go trash his stuff while he's gone and call him names when he gets back?

he seems sweet, and he’s not the first person to ruin dextera’s name, and so he takes yuu’s hand without an argument and squeezes it once before he pulls back. he needs those, so he can’t hold on for too long—wait, what? ]

[ why would he want to do that!!! ]

( it's a little hard to nail the syllables without hearing it first. especially when it comes to yuu, who can barely fucking read as it is. )

Yeah, but it's fun.

( getting guren mad is always fun. and he just got here, guren's been here for a while, clearly it means he's gotta up his game. )

[ it’s fun, he says!!! ]

[ maybe this is what yuu and guren are like normally, though. dextera’s relationship with his family is quite different, but he doesn’t think his experience is the average one either. ]

( this is definitely what they're like normally, don't question it. the why gets a funny look, one brow raising while he purses his lips. )

For fun? It's not like it'll really bother him, I mess with Guren all the time.

[ a lot of things make sense. this is the way they interact, then… no wonder guren is so secretly fond of damian, when damian always just gives him a hard time. yuu might be a little more playful than damian, but honestly, it’s all the same. ]

OK. [ oh? he relents with a laugh. ] I’ll follow your lead.

[culpa]

( yuu used to be angrier. a lot easier to set off. more likely to throw down than to ever open his mouth and actually talk about his feelings, because it was safer that way. it was guren that got him to open up, guren that taught him that having feelings is okay, and guren who told yuu how important it is to have friends. to trust others.

guren who taught him the importance of messing around, too. even if it's just fucking around with his stuff. dex's laugh is returned with one of yuu's own, grin spread wide. )

I think it's this way?

( no, no yuu. he's pointing in the opposite direction, actually. )

[ oh, yuu… ]

Ah…

[ dextera reaches out, automatically taking his hand—he doesn’t really have any parental instincts with kids, but he has gotten used to doing a lot with his hands—and pulling him gently in the other direction.

he points, with an apologetic smile on his face. ]

( what kind of weirdo just grabs onto someone's hand like this?? whatever, yuu looks a little embarrassed for a moment, but he gets over it quickly enough. follows dextera's pull. )

Oh, oops.

[ yeah, guren felt a bit the same way, but he got used to it. either yuu will or yuu won’t, and dextera will eventually respond accordingly. he pulls his hand away, once it seems like yuu’s got the picture. ]

You’ll find your way around. Eventually.

Haha, I could find it if I really looked.

( but he's not. this is much more fun. and there's nothing wrong with getting a little lost, or spending time around this place. getting to know it from the ground up is probably. good? what does he know. )

I bet I could find Guren by listening for him nagging someone. He does that a lot, I bet he's doing it right now.

[ truth be told, dextera has never thought of what guren does as “nagging” since it comes from such a kind place, but he supposes that his opinion may be in the minority.

at least, among people who have known guren forever. he laughs, just a breath. ]

Does he nag you? A lot?

( and nagging is just a word. it felt a lot more accurate when he was younger, yes. when he was angrier and figuring his own shit out still. but yuu has known better, for a very long time; that guren does what he does because he cares, even if it's annoying as hell. )

All the time. It's always "Yuu do this" and "Yuu do that" and "why didn't you do that better? Stupid Yuu".

( but he says it with a fond smile, so. )

[ it’s sweet. dextera is no stranger to being told what to do, and even insulted for it, but it’s different when there’s a mutual trust between the two. if guren said any of those things to him, after all, he would be inclined to take it just as a cautious fretting. ]

That sounds… like him.

[ he’s just going to usher yuu along back to guren’s house, where he can maybe babysit for a while, since guren is likely to be helping everyone else around town. the laptops can come later. ]

( dextera is (for now) enough to keep his attention so this is fine. once they reach guren's house, there's a moment where yuu stares up at it, squints. )

Oooh, this is where it was hiding.

( will he remember his way back? only time will tell. )

at that question, dextera eases a bit—not that he was tense, but there’s something a little nerve-wracking talking about guren with someone who has known him for much longer than dextera has. there’s no need to prove himself when they’re talking about sign language! ]

A friend… taught it to me.

[ he wasn’t born this way, and he misses his voice desperately, but this has been a good compromise for communication. ]

( if yuu were a better child, he would ask dex to teach him, too. to show him how the heck he does that. but yuu, being himself, knows he'd just get confused trying to learn and it's probably as difficult as learning like. kanji. which he still hasn't completely gotten down, thanks. )
