(If you asked Mutsunokami how much he cares about his appearances, he'd tell you he doesn't care too much, especially when he's always a little scratched up. That doesn't mean he doesn't take care of himself, though! You can't ignore your human body, after all. That's why it's important to rest and do some of those more boring, mundane human things like doing your laundry...

He's at a stream in the forest that other people in Chroma might also wash their clothes. He's sort of just chilling out while the water runs over his kimono, holding his fingers out in front of him and counting things down. He'll go at it for a little while, tracing something into the dirt next to him every now and then and then--)

How many people d'ya think used to live here?

Something else? Sounds like you already have a theory.

Well, for example!

( He sits up a little straighter, making a point to look at Maribelle, )

Ya didn't come all the way out here to talk just to me, did ya? ( And he glances at her laundry, ) People get distracted real easy. Something small happens and everyone forgets what they're doing in the moment. So imagine if something big happened.

[She 'hm's a bit.]

It would require an awfully big distraction, if that's what you mean. Like a monster, or dragon...

So some big event?

( That's what she's getting at, right? Because that was his line of thinking, so far. )

I've seen it before. Wars, strife, conflict, all sorts of big things that get people focusing on all the wrong things, like what makes 'em different and which side's better or worse. Just getting all caught up 'til they miss out on things that were obvious 'til real recently.

( There's one problem with his theory: )

Don't get me wrong, a lot of crazy things've happened here since I got here... but I haven't seen any signs of any real big thing, ya know?

Well, there would be if it had a lasting effect...

[She snaps her fingers, suddenly understanding something.]

Wait a moment, that's it! That's why we can keep coming back from all these horrid things... Because none of them are permanent! I've even heard you can come back from the dead!

[tosa]

( They're definitely on the same page but that last little bit has him all distracted for a moment, )

Like if they die right here they come back?

( Because he's heard of the dead from back home appearing here alive. Heck, he's even seen a version of that himself with his old master appearing here. )

It's not instantly, but that's what I've heard over the network. Plus, if one of us was really dead for good, there would have been an announcement, and a burial, a funeral, but nothing. In addition, there is a matter about time. Some people are here from other's pasts and futures - if someone died here, it would upset that balance.

[tosa]

It would but that doesn't stop it from happening.

( When you meddle with time, things happen and sometimes they aren't within your control. )

But you're thinking something here's trying to keep some sort of order still?

[troubadamsel]

That's what I'm thinking. Otherwise, the town would never be restored, and that does seem to be the original goal.

[tosa]

Guess it makes sense... but ya know, with a place like this, if one of us suddenly fell over, it could just pull another guy from some where else.

( It's an interesting theory! He likes it! But when they know so little and still have so many holes to fill in, there's still a lot of uncertainty, )

In fact, this place has a habit of replacing people when we go missing, don't ya think?

[She makes a sad little sound at that, looking away. One of the missing is an ally.]

... I wish we could know what happened to them. I want to believe they're safe...

[tosa]

( What was that? She sounded a little sad for a moment, )

If ya believe it, then that's it. They're safe.

( It's that simple!!! )

[She's a bit surprised by that response, but struggles to smile.]

... Optimism can be difficult to hold here... but I appreciate every drop of it.
