Event Nine.

Thus, on Life’s gloomy sea,
Heareth the marinere
Voices sweet, from far and near,
Ever singing in his ear,
“Here is rest and peace for thee!”

t's a dark night, and the sounds of feet in the darkness are further dampened and hidden by even more magic, as they are lured away by the soft sounds of dreams that are too good to be true, leaving the Town much, much emptier than when it began.

On one side, an island, and a ticking clock to a gruesome death.

On the other, the slow realization that those bonds everyone has been forging might mean much, much more than they first thought.

It's really me. [He looks like he's about two seconds from bursting into relieved tears, but he beams and throws his arms around Shouto now.]

I'm so glad you're safe! [Izuku presses his face into Shouto's shoulder now, feeling a good chunk of the tension he's held through the week finally melt away.] I...I was really worried.

I'm here.

[He trembles under Izuku's grip, hugging him tighter and closer. This is something he's done to Izuku. He's hurt him. Maybe not a physical injury, but it's still a hurt.]

I'm sorry.

[Even if a tear or two (or more) escapes him, Izuku quickly shakes his head in denial.]

It wasn't your fault. [Finally, he pulls away, reminding himself that he can hold Shouto close as long as he likes after everything else is taken care of.] Are you injured anywhere? Should I call a healer?

[Without even waiting for an answer, Izuku looks him over, brows creased in worry.]

[Shouto might be tired and hungry, but there aren't much more than scratches on him. Apparently some of the sirens got a few swipes in.]

These are just scratches. We can bandage them up at home.

[It's nowhere near as bad as it could've been--Izuku's thankful for that. With a soft sigh, he releases even more of the tension he's been holding, and then smiles at him.]

I'll take care of you when we're home. For now... [His hand lingers on Shouto's cheek before he drops it and stands up, swaying just a little on his feet.] We need to help the others fight the sirens off.

[Shouto winces and grabs Izuku's shoulders.]

You don't look great either. Have you been okay?

Aizawa-sensei would say that if you get yourself hurt while you're trying to rescue people, then you're becoming a liability.

I-I've been fine. [That was extremely unconvincing, and he knows it.] Okay, I could be better.

Um, the truth is, we're all kind of in bad condition right now. I'll explain it later. [Izuku steadies himself and breathes in.] The sooner we take out the sirens, the sooner we can get everyone to safety.

I trust you. [Maybe a little too much. But when Izuku says something, Shouto would like to think he's bound to his words.]

... But I'm out of commission. My quirk isn't working well on this island and when I use it, it drains me a lot faster than normal. I don't know if I can do much.

It isn't? [That's more than a little alarming, and Izuku takes a second to activate his own quirk again, just to make sure it's still working.]

Did they do something to you and the others to keep you from fighting back?

[Izuku would've thought the song should be enough, but the sirens were much more clever if they'd taken other precautions with their captives, too.]

I don't know.

I think there was something weird about that island. It'll probably come back if I rest away from this place.

[But being stuck in the boat while Izuku goes back into the fray rankles on his nerves. He should be doing more. Never mind that he hasn't eaten much while he was here and had to suffer feeling actual temperatures.]

[As reassuring as it would be to have Shouto fighting alongside him, Izuku can see that the situation would be far from ideal if he asked him to come along.]

Okay. Stay here. Guard the boats from the sirens if you have to. [He lets his hand rest on Shouto's shoulder for a moment.] I'll be right back.

[Izuku's out there kicking sirens and Shouto's in the boat wishing he could do more than feel kind of sick and exhausted.

They make their way back home eventually. He nudges the door open. Once he's inside, he flops onto their mattress.]

Home...

[Izuku does the same, with a relieved sigh as he sprawls out on the mattress. It's been a difficult week, but at least the nauseating feeling from before has essentially faded.

And Shouto, Ochako, and the others are back. That's the most important part.]

Home. [He echoes, scooting closer to Shouto.]

[He turns so he can loop an arm around Izuku. It's been too long since he's been by his side. Time to make up for all the cuddling he lost out on.]

Will you tell me what happened here?

Of course. [Izuku carefully turns over so he can face Shouto properly, and then tucks his head under Shouto's chin.]

What did you want to know?

[Having Izuku here feels like he's being completely grounded. Everything happened but he can steady himself when Izuku is right here in his arms.]

What happened while I was gone? Were you okay?

[His first instinct is to reassure Shouto, brush off any troubles so that Shouto doesn't have to worry about what happened on his end on top of the Sirens. That thought quickly gets brushed aside; Izuku knows that that's the last thing Shouto would appreciate, after everything else.]

We weren't...attacked or anything. After the sirens took you guys, things were quiet here. [He trails off now, voice growing quieter.] Most of us got really sick, though.

[Izuku's growing to know him better these days. He'd be upset if the truth was brushed aside for an easy lie. He pulls Izuku closer to him, doing his best to reassure him that he's not going anywhere now.]

... Was it because we were gone?

I think so. It got worse the longer you guys were missing.

[There's no resistance from Izuku when Shouto pulls him closer, appreciating the closeness after the separation and worry. Silently, Izuku slips his hand under Shouto's shirt, pressing his palm lightly to Shouto's skin. That, too, is a reassurance that Shouto's here with him again.]

What about you? What happened when the sirens took you?

[Part of him wants to push it further, but the rest of him is just too exhausted to do more than lie here and cuddle.

So he'll let Izuku touch him and close his eyes.] They didn't make it easy for anybody, did they.

The sirens fought over who got to eat us first.

[Izuku's hand twitches against Shouto's back as those words process. If they'd been any later... something really could have happened to Shouto and the others.]

...I'm really glad you're safe. I thought, after so many days had passed...

[He trails off, just tucking his face into Shouto's neck.]

[He feels like he's stressing Izuku out more. But at the same time... he can't lie to him. That's what happened when he was on the island.

Emotions are hard for him, he can rarely put a name to them. Izuku always seems to be the one who's in touch with that sort of thing.]

... I'm glad you're okay too. And... I'm still here. You don't have to worry.

Can't help it. [His words are muffled against Shouto's neck, though he doesn't pull away at all.]

You worried about me when I disappeared last time--it's the same thing for me.

[Izuku's right, of course. Shouto worries every time Izuku gets into trouble and he's hard to settle.

He should at least let Izuku be worried. So he accepts it.]

I don't know if getting kidnapped together would make things better.

[Good question!! Izuku actually takes a moment to think about this.]

Better...I think. At least I'd know where you are, and we'd have a chance of fighting whatever captured us together.

[He knows that they make a good team, and he trusts Shouto with his life.]
