t's a dark night, and the sounds of feet in the darkness are further dampened and hidden by even more magic, as they are lured away by the soft sounds of dreams that are too good to be true, leaving the Town much, much emptier than when it began. On one side, an island, and a ticking clock to a gruesome death. On the other, the slow realization that those bonds everyone has been forging might mean much, much more than they first thought. ...Yeah. [ there's a pause. ] Three people. I mean, there's three other people from the same place as me, if not the same time. My best friend since I was a kid, my alternate universe brother, and my best friend's alternate universe dad.

All three of them aren't here anymore. I know at least Egbert is alive, but...

Okuni's face wrinkles in confusion, but this is probably only one of the top ten most weirdest things she's heard Dave say. That, and Mutsu told her about alternate universes that one time, so Dave is fortunate enough not to receive the brunt of her CONFUSION.]

Is that just a particular feeling or did he leave some kind of message behind?

[She wants to know for reasons beyond Just Curious, though she takes care not to sound doubtful. If John is alive, then that's even better.]

[ he pulls a pendant out from under his shirt. ]

We all got these the other month. We just kind of...knew, we had to choose when we got them, for them to protect someone. It hasn't changed, so John hasn't like...been in enough danger to need an extra life.

[ he's pretty sure it'd change if john needed the one-time save. ]

I keyed mine to him. Without askin', but like, he's my best friend? So.

Hmm.

[A magical pendant, huh... She'll take it. It sounds like a far more accurate indicator of John's status than feelings or messages written in blood in shady corners.]

From what I've heard of him so far, he sounds like he'd do his best to look after your brother and his friend.

[So if John is alive, then the other two must be... Semi-alive, at least.]

Yeah. Dude's a born hero. [ he means it in a good way. ] ...And my bro is pretty capable, just...kind of a dumbass about his own self-worth. He'd throw himself in the fire for whoever, you know?

That sounds exactly like someone I know. There really is such a thing as family resemblance, huh?

It's not the same as a fire, but I think running around and getting soaked in the rain is something your brother would do too.

[SEE!! LOOK AT THIS GIANT LEAF!! she shakes it so that more droplets probably accidentally fall on dave's face]

Yeah, but if you hadn't found one, you still would have been out here, huh?

I would definitely have found one no matter what.
