Event Nine.

Thus, on Life’s gloomy sea,
Heareth the marinere
Voices sweet, from far and near,
Ever singing in his ear,
“Here is rest and peace for thee!”

t's a dark night, and the sounds of feet in the darkness are further dampened and hidden by even more magic, as they are lured away by the soft sounds of dreams that are too good to be true, leaving the Town much, much emptier than when it began.

On one side, an island, and a ticking clock to a gruesome death.

On the other, the slow realization that those bonds everyone has been forging might mean much, much more than they first thought.

It's plenty reassuring.

[It really isn't. But Keith shakes his head at the question.] Not yet. Save your strength in case someone really needs it.

[Who knows how rough a shape people are going to be in by the end of this.] I'll get patched up once we make it back.

[Uh...]

... I can heal more than one person, you know... [That's just muttered, though, because he really is feeling pretty damn bad right now.

The fewer summonings, the better.]

Anyway, you're right. We need to find the others first and foremost. Which way haven't you looked yet?

And you might need to.

[Keith adds before nodding.]

I started from that direction. So... we can head along the shore this way?

[This that. He doesn't even know cardinal directions on this awful island. He's really ready to get off it.]

[He might very well need to, it's true... though hopefully not.]

Yeah, that's fine with me. I'll follow and act as support, okay, Keith-san?

Let's do this.

Works for me.

[He reaffirms his grip on his whacky-stick and heads off in the direction he indicated. There is still. Well. It's chaos. Sirens. Signs of struggle. Some of their fellow abductees and rescuers.]

These things seem to be able to screw with people's powers, so be careful.

Is that right...?

[Hrm...]

So we need to depend mostly on our weapons, right? I won't hold you back even if I can't use my Personas.

[At least. He'll do his best not to.]

Yeah. Yusuke had trouble with his. And some other folks too. Magic isn't my thing, so I don't know exactly the extent of it.

[Keith is more a hit-stab-kick-fighter than magic user. But it's been worrying to see his friends struggling that way.]

Weapons are probably our best bet, or at least the most reliable bet for now.

I see... if Kitagawa-san can't, then it'll definitely affect mine too.

[Since they both have those dratted Personas.]

But I did bring my sword. I can still watch your back.

[A beat.]

Is he okay? [Yusuke...]

Good. I'll trust it to you. And I'll keep an eye on yours too.

[Teamwork, makes the dream work.

Keith nods at the question.] Cold, tired, hungry. But yeah, he's all right last I saw him. But the sooner we get everyone off this island the better.

[Himself included. Adrenaline and stubbornness will carry him far, but eventually Keith will flat out collapse too. Not yet though.]

Yeah, that's for sure... none of us are really in good shape to be fighting right now.

[So you'd better bet he's keeping a very close eye on you, Keith. He knows!! How you are!!]

But I'm glad he's okay... it seems like we got here just in time, thank goodness...

[Honestly that's probably for the best, Minato. Thank you for being a friend.]

I'm pretty glad you guys showed up when you did. Things were getting pretty dicey for a while.

[Dicey is putting it lightly.] But you all aren't exactly unaffected either. Did something happen in the town too?

[He's got you, Keith, he knows your type.]

... Yeah, something like that.

[A sigh.]

Once you guys went missing, we all started to feel pretty sick. It was more severe for some people than others, but I think...

Well, most everyone thinks it was connected to our bonds to all of you.

That's...

[Well. No stranger than the rest of the stuff that happens here.] So you've all had it pretty rough too.

Glad you've made it anyway. Is everyone mostly all right?

[Are the friendliest people the most affected? Now he's worried about all his friends, not just the kidnapped ones.]

Yeah, don't worry.

[LIKE....MOSTLY. Mostly is a good, vague word.]

You guys were in the most trouble; we just all felt a little sick, that's all... so let's focus on getting everyone off this island, okay?

Okay.

[Keith concedes, but he's still concerned. However, they do need to focus on getting out of here, getting everyone out of here. So he won't argue.

Much. For now.]

...up there. [Keith gestures, near the shore. Movement that definitely is not human. Ready for this?]

[Minato just nods firmly, reaching for his Evoker. He knows they said don't rely on magic, but right now he feels fine--

He can try, and if it doesn't work, then he can resort to his sword.]

I see it.

I'll flush it out--ready?

[He won't do anything until Keith's prepared, though.]

[Keith readies his stick. He is, as a matter of fact, as ready as he is going to get in this place at this time.

So he gives a quick nod.]

I'm ready.

[A glance at Minato. Go for it. Whatever weird magic-y thing you're going to do.]

[And weird magic time it is! Minato whips out his Evoker, lifts it, and presses it to his temple, pulling the trigger in the same smooth motion--

So he can summon Byakko. The tiger doesn't actually lunge at the siren lurking behind the rocks--instead, it flings some ice its way, and the siren comes screeching out from behind the rocks, lunging at the two boys.]

[Someday Keith is going to ask about the evoker and WHO THE HELL DESIGNED IT but today is not that day. He's tired, and his weirdness threshold is so high at this point that yup sure why not.

And hey the magic is working. Awesome. Keith watches the ice attack, but his attention is still fixed on the siren -- which turns out to be good when it comes charging at them. No hesitation, Keith brings the large stick around full on baseball bat style, connecting straight with the creature's head and sending it sprawling back.

He's not playing today. He's done with everything about this place.]

[He's not playing today. Go, Keith, go!! You're doing great!

And, well... Minato's just going to lift the Evoker to his temple and offer up some help. He summons a different summon in a flash of light and what might seem like angel wings, and then Keith will find that...

He feels a fair bit faster and stronger than he's used to.

Have some buffs!!]

[Okay that's weird. But it's good weird. So hey stronger and faster to basically beat a siren to a pulp. And its friend when it shows up to help. Straight back into the water.]

Don't try to eat... me or my friends... again!

[Seriously. He has taken offense at that. Serious serious offense.]

[That's a pretty fair thing to take offense at, Keith. Minato's not going to argue it at all.

Instead, he watches as the sirens are pretty systematically crushed here, and blinks slowly, lowering his Evoker.]

Well.

[Well.]

I think they won't be eating anyone anymore, now. [Sugoi, Keith.]

...good.

[Sorry, Minato. He isn't always a-- NO, no this is honestly him. He's just usually got a sword or a robot and not just full on clubbing murderous merfolk.]

It'd be pretty great if the things around here stopped trying to eat us and kill us in general.

[He's definitely getting the sense that Keith is Keith and this is just kind of how Keith is--

But.

It's fine. He just snorts softly, shaking his head.]

You might be asking too much... mythological creatures are pretty much known for universally wanting to eat humans, right?

[It's like their Defining Trait.]

Are you feeling okay? [Good enough to keep on going and fighting more sirens? Because Minato's starting to sag a little, and would honestly appreciate the support.]
