that and I, christy, am screaming inwardly that the conversation would even veer this way LEAVE ME ALONE PROBLEMATIC CANON ]
Oh. Um—
[ She's pulled out of her thoughtfulness as she looks around, then starts to trot to the opposite end of the arcade. ]
There's a boardwalk that's nice- [ She reaches up to touch the cage brooch on her necklace ] --But I wasn't able to go to it when I came here alone. Maybe now that you're here, we could?
no subject
Fine. [It'll keep him from trying to encourage Elizabeth to bust up the rest of Battleship Bay. He could use a boardwalk chill-out.] I'm following, go ahead. [Well... technically, he'll be walking beside her.]
Have you ever been below? On the actual land, which I assume is North America.
no subject
Well... Sort of? Not in this—"my" universe, though.
[ She's only ever seen it as a glance, and most of the time when she catches a glimpse of the green below, there are more pressing things going on. Such as falling from a Sky Line into the Bay. ]
When I was younger and I could make my Tears myself, I would go through them. It's... Well, it's how I know anything of what people are like, I think. You can't learn everything from reading a book.
[ Though the implication there is a terribly lonely one. Once she couldn't create the Tears herself, she really was trapped. She still visited other worlds from time to time, but it was much rarer. It was left up to random chance, and she had learned quickly to not visit any world that looked like Columbia. It had to be something completely different. It was often months before she would ever get to talk to another person. ]
I never went far from the Tears, but I had visited a few places in the world, at least. And some places where I don't really know where they were, exactly.
no subject
You like this then--the wormholes. [It's not exactly a question.] The ones in town going to different places.
Have you been in any of the others?
no subject
I do. Even besides how it's a little nostalgic, I love seeing how other people live. Even when I could go through my Tears, it was never for long. These doors let me visit as long as I'd like.
[ It implicitly answers his question, but she still makes it clear. ]
I've gone through every door I've found. Not always for long, but enough to see what it's like.
no subject
And yet, he's still surprised by others with a craving for it. Elizabeth. Minato. The latter should have taken Elizabeth, Damian thinks, not him.] I can see why you wouldn't want to come back. [It only solidifies how less bad he feels in beating the crap out of some stuff here.]
You and Arisato would get along. He wanted to visit other places. The two of you should go into the pocket dimensions together.
no subject
Oh, we do! We're— [ She pauses, hesitating, but the word comes with warmth once she decides to say it: ] We're friends.
[ They'd talked about that already, but it still makes her feel a little giddy to say it. The more she says it, the more real it feels. It's not at all like Booker, where she had thought of him as a friend, but it was only for a lack of options. It was real. ]
I'm going to find him eventually, I hope. I'd like to see what kind of place he's from, since we've talked about it a little bit. [ Which reminds her... ] Oh, what is yours like, Damian?
no subject
"Who's Jon?" "My [looks at smudged writing on palm] fried fritter?"]
We looked for the wormhole to his world, but couldn't find it at the time. Instead, he showed me the cat cafe that we suspected was related in some way to Aizawa. [The quest quiets him for a bit.
He just pretends he's enjoying the scenery of the boardwalk.] Nothing special. [The pause is quick.] A school. It's boring.
It's Jon's school. Father made me attend public school with him, so now I'm forced to go.
no subject
...A cat cafe?
[ She has to question that, since it sounds strange to her. Little does she know, she's actually picturing it exactly correctly. It's not that complicated, Elizabeth!! But she is a little excited hearing what Damian's world is, since, well. Of course she's a nerd that's excited about schools. ]
That doesn't sound boring. I guess I wouldn't really know, but it still sounds fun to me. What sorts of things were there? What sorts of things were you learning...?
no subject
It's a cafe... with cats. [Obviously.] The establishment is set up to allow cats to have social interaction and potentially be adopted.
[Slowly, he glances at Elizabeth, trying to judge whether or not she's being earnest. He gets she's been isolated, but... is she... for real?]
I'd rather be homeschooled. The education system is a disaster. [Why is he an 80 year old man all the time.] The things we're required to learn are only there to pad standardized test scores. Teachers are underpaid and the things they'd prefer to teach they don't have the time to do. [Oh right. Her question...]
We learn mathematics, literature, history, government and economics, art, biology, chemistry, a foreign language, and physical education. It's all given in short increments for one-hundred and eighty days. Boring child's play.
no subject
[ Cats are cute, and she would definitely enjoy an afternoon of sitting in a (Parisian, in her head) cafe with cats milling about. But, moving on from one point of embarrassment to another— ]
...That doesn't sound boring at all.
[ Because, yeah. That isolated. So she's completely, earnestly for real. ]
That's so much to learn! And with other people, so it's even better. I'd definitely prefer learning with others than to do it by myself. [ The social part appeals to her, naturally, though after a moment, she does ask: ] ...But is the system really that bad? It sounds like a good structure.
no subject
People don't learn at the same speed or the same ways as others. The ones who learn slower fall behind, and the ones who learn faster are held back. Some people learn with their hands, and civil jobs are frowned upon even when they're the backbone of society.
However, grouping children based on a slow-fast standard breeds division between them even if keeping them together allows them to learn how to coexist.
[For a moment, he looks out as if he's thoughtful. Having to explain it reminds him of his Titans. They're all different, even working under a common goal.]
The American education system lacks important tutelage opportunities, and only some are offered as part of free schooling when it's over. Sports. Few academic clubs.
Plenty of children lack the income, mobility, and even parentage for the rest given by the community centers. Self defense, reproductive biology, home economics, personal business management. The basics everyone should receive.
It's flawed, is all. Even around the world, half of it is flawed. If you want to make better people, let kids experience the world they live in.
I know that better than anyone. My intellect and skills are beyond compare, and yet... [He frowns, expression dark, and he looks away. His voice is soft.] I don't know how to talk to anyone.
no subject
But it's an idle thought, since she listens quite attentively. It's all abstract and hard for her to really understand, and she knows it. That also brings with it a strange feeling. It's the disconnect that reminds her how separate from the world she's truly been, since it doesn't seem like it's purely a difference in time. She twirls her thimble thoughtfully, but she tries not to feel too sad about the distance she feels from his words.
It ends up being easier than she expects, though.
The rational explanation shifts to something a little more emotional, and with it, her self-pity all but evaporates. She looks at Damian sympathetically for a moment, but it turns to a softer smile as she stops fidgeting and instead nods to him. This is probably the exact moment she decided to make him a flowercrown. ]
I don't know about that. We've been talking, right?
[ She considers reaching out to him, and though she's not sure how he'll respond, it still seems like the right thing to do. She's gentle, but Elizabeth places a hand on his shoulder in support. ]
I consider you a friend of mine, Damian.
