[Fat flakes of snow drifted from the grayed out sky, accumulating with the blanket already settled on the ground and buildings. It painted the cracking, crumbling dormitory in an almost soft light. Or maybe that was just the memories making his mind hazy as Rin stared from the bridge leading up to the entrance. His breath plumed out in cold clouds, though despite his lack of warm clothing he didn't feel the winter chill quite the way he expected to.
A faint sigh escaped him, feet seemingly rooted to the damp cement. The familiarity of the location did little to urge him towards the welcoming doors. His mind was mired in memories both good and bad, the past year of events weighing on every part of his body. Where had it all gone so wrong... ?
He would move, eventually, but there was always a chance someone could find him there simply staring at the location where he and Yukio had once lived in relative peace.]
ii. we are all chained to the rhythm (kitchen)
[Cooking never changed. No matter where he was, what he had to do to make it happen, the end result was always the same. Savory smells, flavors on the tongue, the satisfaction of an accomplished task.
The silence that had permeated Rin's entrance felt wrong at first, a reminder of that a place that only housed three was now a complete shell of what it had once been. He didn't think too hard on how real or fake this place was given it's physical attachment to Chroma, but that didn't make the aching feeling at the emptiness any less poignant.
He could still get to the kitchen in house in Chroma via the back door, yet he was drawn to the familiarity of this one. Shiny bowls and utensils, clean chrome counter tops, clear water that ran from a curved tap in to deep sinks... he didn't think it possible to miss a place the way someone would miss a person, but by now it was all intertwined to him.
There were moments, brief seconds were he would feel as though he weren't alone in the vast empty dormitory. He would turn expecting to see Yukio leaning on the counter in that ugly cream sweater with the penguin on it that he loved so much, smirking in constant amusement at the one thing that actually managed to keep Rin's attention.
Of course no one was there. No brother. No classmates chatting at the tables in the connected dining hall with tea and snacks. Not even Shura mocking him over her recent taking over of one of the empty dorm rooms.
No one.
More than once he had to rub at his eyes with the sleeve of his shirt. It was just the onions he was chopping. Honestly.]
iii. oh how i wish you were here (bedroom)
[The frame was cheap, plastic made to look like metal and already chipping in some corners even though it was rarely moved from the desk it sat upon. The photo inside, however silly it was, was worth more than anything in the world to Rin. They had just saved Kyoto, the tension in their friendships had melted away in the wake of truths, struggles and solidarity in life threatening moments. They were teasing Rin relentlessly, yes, but every goofy jab about being the son of Satan warmed his heart.
They were his friends. His first real, true friends, and he missed them so damn much it was a wonder he hadn't broken in two from it.
Silence ruled the dormitory once more, muffled further by the continuing snow that fell from heavy clouds outside. Rin just sat there, staring at the photo in a strangely quiet and still moment with his blue eyes focused intently on the image. If he stared hard enough maybe another door would take him to them.
To then.
Happier times. Better times. Gaining acceptance of his flames, his power, himself.
How quickly it all went away.
A breath in, and he finally set it down on the desk again, looking around the room that looked for all the world like it had been frozen in the days before Yukio became a prisoner of the Order.
He leaned back in his chair, rubbing at his eyes roughly with a hoarse "fuck..." escaping through parted lips. His balance wasn't exactly the greatest right then and he naturally tipped back too far, causing a heavy thud to shatter the silence in the dorm as he hit the wooden floor.]
Owwwww...
iv. wildcard
[Rin is going to be spending a lot of time here and trying to get back as much as he possibly can. These prompts are... pretty sad because canon is pretty fucking sad right now so feel free to wildcard me.]
iii
Does it count as snooping to see if any of the doors in the house led to somewhere else? Probably.
The cold hit him hard, such a strong contrast to the heat of Chroma. Nyx tucks his hands into his armpits and looks around. All he can really see clearly is the old building across the bridge, so with a bracing inhale, he makes his way up to search for Rin.
He might have given up, too, with the scale of the worn, abandoned rooms inside the dorm. It would have taken much longer than an hour to search everywhere, and Nyx wasn't too keen on freezing to death. However, a loud thud echoes clearly, and he makes a beeline towards a room that looks more lived in than most others.
Rin was on the floor, but something other than the fall seemed to be bothering him.]
Rin? You okay?
no subject
[Voice thick from tears, face wet, he sounds absolutely thrilled at now being on his back and completely exposed in such a vulnerable moment. At least it's just Nyx. He might get ribbed for it later but at the moment he's more concerned than amused at Rin's position.
He groaned and rolled on to his side, getting to his feet with a sniffle and cough as he rubbed at his red face, keeping his back to the man if only to save what's left of his pride.]
Didn't think anyone was gonna come in...
no subject
Finally he moves to place a hand on the kid's shoulder, not trying to get him to turn around but an offer of support. It seems he's not the only one with painful emotions attached to these memories.]
I wanted to see if you were busy. Sorry if you'd have rather been alone.
[His voice carries a tone that implies his continued company now that he's already here. Sorry, Rin. You're stuck with him now.]
no subject
No, no, it's-- it's fine. I'm fine. Just-- ... lotta memories, y'know?
[Stuck with him, but really it's probably needed. Wallowing in emotions alone is rarely good for anyone.
He glances at the framed photo on the desk.]
That was the first time I ever got to Kyoto, and I practically had to beg them to take me to the tower. Apparently most people in the area don't even like it! Go figure, huh?
ii
Quiet footsteps on the stairs, doors opening and closing as he moves through the dorm. For some, Mikleo is an invisible being and they don't even notice his presence for the most part. This place seems so human that he doesn't expect that the person it belongs to isn't entirely human.
So when finally makes his way to the kitchen, it's with the thought that the person behind the counter can't see him. Mikleo stands at the far end and watches - not yet being able to see the physical differences that mark Rin as someone not human. Idly musing to himself, not expecting he can be heard. ]
An odd dwelling. Not a school but there were books that could have been classwork...
sorry for the delay!
Mikleo's nature does however make him a lot more quiet to Rin's ears than others would have been in the otherwise silent dormitory, meaning that when the voice does reach him he damn near got the piss scared out of him.
He let out a loud yelp and jumped high enough that landing was damn near impossible, ending with him sprawled on the tile floor of the kitchen.
Luckily he wasn't holding anything at the moment.]
Oww... geez. Where the hell did you come from?!
no worries~
It's happened before. He quickly makes his way across the space to peer over the counter at the teen sprawled on the ground, ensuring that he isn't seriously injured. ]
I apologize for startling you. Are you hurt? [ Mikleo would be more than willing to offer up a healing arte. For now, he keeps his distance while Rin collects himself. ]
Apparently people can visit other's "worlds" if they find the right doorway. I got caught up exploring the building. [ He's starting to think that Mikleo should just act as if everyone can see him upon first meeting them rather than assume he's invisible. ]
no subject
'sokay, you were just like... super quiet! There's no one here, I thought I woulda heard someone comin' in.
[Big building, yes, but hardly without it's creaks and groans from age and time. He huffs a bit, shoving hair back out of his face.]
Were you lookin' for the cafe? The kitchen door became the portal so I kinda... got caught up hangin' out in here.
1; the trend of deep talks continues
So when he enters this place and sees the soft white blanket, he's at first stunned by the beauty of it, before his gaze finds the tall, dilapidated building nearby. That view combined with the snow oddly strikes him as lonely.
He decides to explore, to head toward that building specifically and see what can be found. Naturally, it doesn't take long to find Rin. He frowns when it seems like the other teen isn't moving at all, so he pauses next to him when he gets close enough. Following Rin's gaze he finds the building once more.]
You know this place?
no subject
[Rin says it softly, almost reverently. His time there had been life changing, mostly in good ways but lately those good things had been overshadowed by Yukio's actions and the potential loss of his little brother.
He let out a breath and motioned to the towering structures in the distance.]
Actually, that's the school. This is the old dorm Yukio and I got stuck in.
no subject
He follows where Rin points and frowns, the huge discrepency in the buildings not being lost on him.]
Wait, you lived there? Was it dangerous?
[The building looks like it wants to fall apart as much as the buildings in Chroma did at first.]
no subject
[He gets it, though. He had his doubts when he first arrived, too.]
It's fine. Pretty empty, though. Just me, Yukio and Shura. ... well. Back home for real. I know this ain't like. Really True Cross.
[Dumb he may be, he's been in Chroma long enough to know how shit works.]

II
What she doesn’t expect is the snowscape and goes into a half run for the dormitory, brushing snow from her hair and still following her nose, catching the tail end of Rin swiping at his eyes with his sleeve. It could... believably be onions. Maybe he’d be happier to pretend that it is.
She isn’t about to touch him to find out, that was a breach of privacy. Instead she makes her way over, not bothering to be very quiet about it so he has ample time to collect himself first. Her voice though is soft as she walks up.]
Hey, need help?
no subject
Thankfully even with her arriving like that he doesn't get too terribly startled. There's a slight jump to his shoulders at her voice, but he turns with a faintly amused smile. Please don't bring up how red his cheeks are...]
Sure.
no subject
[She’ll bring his red face up later. For now she walks closer, looking over the kitchen and trying to see where she could get an apron or at least something to tie her hair back.]
...What are you making? [And more importantly: does she get to eat it after]
no subject
I doubt this is gonna stick around...
[They would be so lucky. He would honestly love to have his dorm in the town, even if it was just as empty as it is now.]
Shogayki.
no subject
If I help I get to share, right?
no subject
[He says it flatly, obviously being sarcastic, but he faintly smirks in her direction just to show that he's not serious about it.]
no subject
[Because if he does she’s going to put laxatives in his shogayaki.]
And after all my hard work too. [Shiho, you haven’t even done anything yet other than to come here and make fun of him...]
no subject
[Is there an echo in here?]
no subject
[But she’s going to!]
no subject
[He even holds out a wooden spoon to her expectantly.]
no subject
Instead she takes the spoon from him, holding it the same way he would probably hold it as she beams at him.] So...?
