he Town is quiet this week. No sudden quests on the forum post, no roars of werewolves in the distance... just peaceful, peaceful quiet. Of course, it's hot as hell right now, but that aside, it's pretty pleasant. You probably don't want to wander around the Town right now, but... Naturally, now's when the Town is going to start thoroughly encouraging you to do just that. You do want to find your doorway back home, don't you? Better get searching! Cool. [ he falls into step beside her. ] So do they look any different to normal books from the outside? Like, would even a muggle like me be able to tell that it's magic?

Well, for starters, they have no words. At least none you can see. The tomes are infused with magic, making them useless as reading material.

[retrobeats]

You're telling me magic eats words?

I... wouldn't go that far, but then, I can't create tomes, I can only use them.

They're weapons, same as a sword or an ax. And like all weapon, you need energy and experience to use it.

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be as simple as just any old dude just waving a wand and saying some words. So how long've you been at this spellcasting gig?

[troubadamsel]

It's been several years, I suppose. It's hard to pinpoint when I specifically began... but I joined the Shepherds as soon as I was allowed.

[retrobeats]

So, that means nothing to me [ he waves his hand across the top of his head a couple times to reinforce this ] but I'm guessing that's a special kinda mage group and not a sheep babysitters' club.

--oh, hey, is that building over there the stables you were talking about?

Yes, keep walking. It's right through the entrance.

Now, we call ourselves the Shepherds as we see our kingdom as our flock. It's the kingdom of Ylisse's official army, and has much more than just mages.

[retrobeats]

You're in the army? [ huh! ] I wouldn't've called that one, but then again you're from a world where you can burn stuff to a crisp using magic, so.

[ as Michael steps through the entrance to the stables, and into the slice of Maribelle's world that's been tethered here, he stops short, his jaw dropping as he stares up (and up, and up) at the giant tree in front of him. ]

Whoa...

[She nods, understanding his awe, as she felt something similar the first time she was here.]

... This is the great Mila tree, said to be as old as the gods themselves. At the very top lives a centuries-old creature called a manakete... a dragon creature that can take human form.

[retrobeats]

Seriously? [ ... forgive him he's still staring up at the tree as he's talking, he's never seen anything like this before. ] What's it doing all the way up there? I mean, other than living there 'cause dragons like mountains and high places and stuff. I can't even imagine where the top of this thing is from all the way down here.

She was sleeping, waiting for the right time to awaken. As one can imagine, no one would disturb her easily if she was all the way at the top.
