Every day, it becomes harder and harder to justify my actions. I can't seem to remember why I made certain choices, and now we're at the cusp of a global war tipped in the demons' favor.

I know nothing about my origins—my earliest memory is of washing ashore in the small village where Akira lived. I have no recollection of my life before that day, and no one was able to find out where I came from or who my parents were.
[ He knits his eyebrows in thought, one hand coming up to frame his chin as he turns the possibilities over in his head. Experimentation seems highly unlikely, but he doesn't feel like he can rule it out so quickly when his early childhood is one big blank canvas. Anything could have happened during those missing years. ]
Are you suggesting someone put a demon in me as part of an experiment?

It wouldn't surprise me if there have been experiments behind closed doors, though. Demons are powerful creatures, and people would want to find a way to claim that power for themselves, despite the dangers.

The demons of my world don't feed on desires, but they are instinctive creatures driven by base desires. People who have been possessed tend to have voracious appetites and an insane sex drive; it's odd that I lack those. Then again, this clearly isn't a typical possession.

I have a theory for why it's so inconsistent with the usual merging process. Have you ever heard of Ophiocordyceps unilateralis?

[ Zombie ants are an actual thing that exist in nature. Fascinating, isn't it? ]
There are demons capable of taking over people through other means than merging with them—I encountered one that had the ability to turn into fluid and take over people's bodies by entering their mouths. Unlike the usual takeover process, this didn't kill the host, at least not in the short term.

[It could add up... If Ryo is encouraging demon activity even while trying to stop it. But... that's strange. It's beyond anything he'd expected from demons.]

[ He releases a sigh that sounds very loud in the large room, flicking his gaze over to the large windows. The sky is an endless expanse of calming blue, but he knows the world out there is anything but calm. ]
...I should have noticed that something was wrong sooner. I wanted to help humanity by exposing the demon threat to the general public, not put them on the fast track to self-destruction.
[ His voice is calm as ever, with only the barest perceptible edge. This wasn't how it was supposed to go, is what he wants to tell himself but his heart feels otherwise. Everything is going exactly as planned and he knows he shouldn't be feeling this way but he can't help it. Humans are weak, fragile things that only have themselves to blame for their imminent extinction. ]

Don't worry. [He says it calmly, confidently.] Whatever's going on with you, we'll figure it out. I won't let up, so get used to me bugging you.

[ Honestly, Ryo kind of doubts Guren will be able to help him because sometimes the grim reality is that there's nothing that can be done, but it's appreciated regardless. He'd rather have Akira support him through this, but Guren is a lot better than no one at all. He can't do this alone, not when he wasn't even able to recognize the warning signs without someone else pointing them out for him. ]

[Ryo definitely has it. No connections, just pure talent? He envies that. Guren comes over to take a look at the book with a hum.]
The ones in my office weren't much different. Entries that I had memorized were clear, but the rest was jibberish.

I see. If this place was created from memory, it would explain why the text looks like this. [ He slides the book back onto the shelf and pulls out the Bible instead. He opens it and this time the text is perfectly clear and sharp. ]
