Event Eight.

To thee I'll return, overburdened with care;
The heart's dearest solace will smile on me there.
No more from the cottage again will I roam,
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.

he Town is quiet this week. No sudden quests on the forum post, no roars of werewolves in the distance... just peaceful, peaceful quiet. Of course, it's hot as hell right now, but that aside, it's pretty pleasant. You probably don't want to wander around the Town right now, but...

Naturally, now's when the Town is going to start thoroughly encouraging you to do just that.

You do want to find your doorway back home, don't you?

Better get searching! And don't mind the other worlds you might end up stumbling into first.

Welcome to Awash's eighth event log, everyone! Further information on this event can be found here at the OOC post.

You are welcome to start your own posts or logs for this event as well. If there are any questions, please ask them here. Thank you!

[It does look novice. And if Damian were and adult Mahmut probably would have bluntly told him that. But instead Mahmut is saying, as kindly as he could.] There are better ways to build traps.

[Also someone else might fall in...? The horse is a smaller breed but very well behaved and calm (war horses aren't meant to flinch or be easily spooked).]

I was heading into the forest to hunt. [Hence, the bow and arrows he was carrying. Also Iskender who was off in the air somewhere. Flying and doing eagle things.]
bittybat: me: I've spent my whole life scanning my environment for cats (doctor: looks like we'll have to perform)

[personal profile] bittybat 2018-07-23 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Damian's eyes drop to the half-covered hole. Look. He knows--!! Now he feels stupid, knowing the extent of his hunting knowledge and having to just go along with the lie.] I'm aware.

[The frown isn't meant for the horse, but Damian is looking at it when it happens. He glances then at the forest, at Mahmut after.] Have you noticed anything strange aside from the usual?

About the town.

[Mahmut considered that. If he knew then...probably he was just dodging the question. So he just nodded and didn't press anymore.

It's fine Damian, the horse wouldn't mind even if you were frowning at it.

Mahmut let out a soft sigh, his hand clenching around the reins.]
If you mean the strange....doorways in town, then yes.

[He doesn't sound the least bit happy about it. And he wants to be angry about where the town decided to connect to from his world but he just feels kind of depressed about it.

His gaze go to the hole in the ground for a moment.]

If you have found a way into your world, [Sounded a bit like he at least suspected that you had.] I hope it had been more pleasant than where I ended up.

[The frown remains, though for a different reason. The Batcave isn't the worst place he could have ended up technically. It's not as great as, say, Wayne Manor, but it's decided better than... where he had been born. Some of the places he's been.

Apokolips.]
That's debatable.

Where did you end up?

The place where my hometown used to be. [He is...really unused to talking about this. For the last 14 years of his life talking about it had been unnecessary because people took one look at his hair and eye colours, and Iskender at his shoulder and they knew.]

Unfortunately, there was nothing of use there to bring back.
bittybat: (i just heard my mom say “there’s no)

[personal profile] bittybat 2018-07-26 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I see. [The Batcave really seems like less of a burden now. He lucked out this time away, even at the expense of people finding out important, highly secretive information.

He glances at the hole by his feet, then he looks up at Mahmut again.]
But not anymore, I'm guess. Your hometown.

What was it like before?

Damian is a good child.

[personal profile] a_special_hat 2018-07-26 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)

[No, it isn't and he shakes his head to confirm it.

But...that is not a question he gets asked ever. His expression is pained before he manages something a little closer to neutral because the last impression he has of his hometown was fire and blood and corpses, and now that he has a chance to describe it, to actually control the narrative he finds that that is not what he wants it to be remembered for. But he had been five and trying to pull on any memory before that was a bit...

Well, he can do facts, at least. Those are things he knows.]

It was a small town near the border of the Turkieye Stratocracy. I don't know if my ancestors settled there because they were falconers and it was a place where golden eagles nested during the summer or we became falconers because they were there. Regardless, everyone knew their way around these birds. Children learned the skills by observing the adults. [And his eyes flickered briefly towards the sky where Iskender is probably...but who can even see with the trees in the way?]

I think....I remember falling asleep on my mother's lap while she worked on turning wool into yarn during shearing season.

[Ironically, Damian is the opposite. The place he lived when he was a child wasn't very nice exactly. The location was fine. The situation wasn't. Instead of having a beautiful place turn sour, he had a sour place turn beautiful.

The memories are bittersweet, and Damian frowns in understanding of it. Turkieye, of course... Turkey, and that reminds him of the Middle East, something he's particularly fond of being half himself. The things Mahmut had been wearing in the well.]
Like the Ottomans. [He assumes Mahmut's world might be an alternate form of his own world, kind of like Elizabeth's.] It sounds nice.

I want to show you something, if you're not too busy hunting.

[He nods because it was, the past tense usage, was a bit too hard today.]

Ottomans?

[He hadn't quite gotten the memo for alternate worlds yet, but there's a look of understanding like, ah, maybe that was a name that came about later? He seems more interested than confused at any rate.]

I can get back to it later. [If he had already hunted something then he'd need to head back with it to start curing it but he hadn't even gotten started yet, really. He looked to the side to his horse.] Should I leave her behind? [...the forest isn't exactly safe though...]

The Turkish Empire. In our world, it existed from 1499 to around 1922. One of its greatest leaders was Sultan Suleiman the First. Their fashion looked somewhat similar to what you had on in the well.

[His eyes settle on the horse, and the barest hints of amusement comes to his face. He loves animals!! The horse is beautiful.] No, you can bring her. [Not wanting to be rude, he walks over to offer his palm for a sniff or a nibble, feels bad about not having any treats, but gives her a firm stroke or two on the neck and shoulder.] What's her name?
a_special_hat: (surprise || coloured)

[personal profile] a_special_hat 2018-07-31 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Empire? [Excuse him for a moment because that's...wow. Okay. Turkieye is not an empire and Mahmut had never wanted it to be. Empire meant expansion which in turn meant war. It wasn't necessarily his country that did it (because apart from the lesser sultanates, the larger part of the Turkieye Stratocracy didn't have a sultan) but Zaganos Pasha had said, right? Chielo was to be Turkieye's first colony.] What calendar are you using?

[Because he had to know. The horse, at least, isn't as alarmed as Mahmut and calmly sniffs the offered hand and allows herself to be pet.]

She doesn't have one. [Animal casualties are just as often, if not more often than human ones.]
bittybat: (me: i’m not like other girls. other girl)

[personal profile] bittybat 2018-07-31 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[RIP Mahmut's wholesome world being shattered by the parallels of Damian's intense one.]

The Turkish Empire ruled most of the inner Mediterranean areas at its peak. Some of Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the Ukraine, Greece, Egypt to Algeria, Syria, Saudia Arabia. It was decently expansive.

We follow the Gregorian calendar. It was a replacement for the Julian calendar. [WAIT, HOLD UP. EXCUSE HIM. Mahmut can be shocked about the Turkish Empire all he wants, but how can this horse not have a name? Damian is appalled. Absolutely appalled. It shows on his face.]

What? She needs a name just like you and I need a name. Even horses deserve names.

[If Zaganos Pasha is assassinated after the invasion of the Balt-Reim Empire is complete know that it will be because of this conversation. Because he doesn't recognize most of those names but 'decently expansive' sounded like it meant a lot of people die.]

The Gregorian calendar again... [That's the same one Elizabeth used. At least now he can give a reference for his time frame.

He wanted to ask who used the Julian calendar but. Ah...he had the distinct look of someone who realizes what they are about to say is not going to be well-received. But he says it anyway because he believes in the importance of honesty.]

She's a warhorse. [As if that explained everything. But he turned to look at the horse and it occurs to him that this is probably the longest he'd spent with the same horse barring the time he spent travelling to secure the support of the other kingdoms in West Rumeliana for the Anti-Imperial Alliance.

He should not get attached, but...]
I am not very good at coming up with names.
bittybat: (“shit it’s 2 a.m.” i say every day)

[personal profile] bittybat 2018-08-02 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Damian inadvertently causing an assassination is probably the most accurately meta thing to ever happen. It's fine. It'll be great.]

Being a warhorse is even more of a reason to have a name. If she's with you in battle, or even for you in battle, she should be honored with a name instead of simply being "a horse." Just like soldiers--they all have names regardless of being soldiers.

[His eyes return to said horse. He offers her some more rubbing along the neck and shoulder.] Vahide. [Her shoulder gets a pat, and then he glances back to Mahmut for opinion.]

There's only one like her.

[personal profile] a_special_hat 2018-08-02 05:04 am (UTC)(link)

[Tell that to the guy being assassinated.]

...you are right. Though they may be animals, they are also living, the same as any other soldier in our armies.

[For all the importance of horses to their culture, this wasn't a thought he'd ever entertained. It seemed so...sentimental and he couldn't afford to be on the battlefield.

But he couldn't deny that Damian had a point. If he thought of warhorses, not as tools but as something closer to a soldier, then of course they deserved a name.

If Mahmut were the sort to worry about these things, he may have wondered if being here, in a place so strange and yet so removed from any kind of war or conflict was making him soft.

But he found himself smiling.]

Vahide is a good name. It suits her. [Because she is, indeed, unique.] I didn't realize anyone knew Turkish here.
bittybat: (“shit it’s 2 a.m.” i say every day)

[personal profile] bittybat 2018-08-02 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not fluent, but I can speak some Turkish. [Which seems to explain the truth of Damian's somewhat darker skin and more Egyptian and Eastern features. He definitely favors Bruce, but anyone who knew Talia would say he's his mother's son for sure.] My grandfather and mother are Arabic.

[The horse gets an appraising look. He's glad she has a name at least.] This way. [He'll let Mahmut lead her, obviously. The eagle is fine to follow after them, too, but Damian isn't aware of its presence yet despite speculation.]
