Event Six.

If you see this hairy creature
Your first choice should always be to run

he full moon hangs brightly over the Town, hovering so low that it almost feels as though you could reach out and touch it. It should be comforting.

But as the howl of wolves fills the air, it's anything but.

There are werewolves on the prowl, and their target is very clear -- the Town won't be able to last without your help.

All the more reason for me to stay, to restrain you if I need to.

[ Her binding spells work, luckily. She'll use them if necessary. ]

[There's a flash of gratitude that helps ease the itch to run.]

And what if you get attacked while you're binding me?

I'll do everything in my power to prevent myself from getting bitten.

Until then, unless you truly want me to leave, I'll stay with you.

[His face clears of emotion, which is all but an admission of the conflict he feels at the statement. Does he want to be out there alone? Not knowing if there'd ever be a way to cure this condition or if he'd one night lose all sense of self? No. Not even a little bit.

But Aqua is young, and powerful. She's an asset to Chroma and her heart is strong enough to weather the bullshit they're put through trying to survive in this world. Could Nyx, in good conscience, risk her life to babysit his selfishness?

Nyx grits his teeth, jaw clenching, and looks away from her.]

[ It reminds her of herself.

Aqua's always been one to hold the weight of a hundred worlds on her shoulders. She's young, but bound by her duty, and she takes pride in it. Nyx had gotten hurt risking his life for the town, and Aqua knows she'd do the same thing in a heartbeat. She already has, by fighting the wolves, by looking for parts of the cure. ]

... Until you tell me to leave, Nyx... I'm here to help you carry your burden. We're comrades, after all. We help each other, watch each other's backs.

No matter what.

[Not long ago he'd have counted many others under the same umbrella. His heart twists painfully and his shoulders slump. He'd do the same for her, and if she says she can handle it then he's not going to doubt her.

This is probably going to kick him in the teeth in the future, but he's too tired to think of traitors tonight.]

I can't get anywhere with you, can I?

I've been told I can be incredibly stubborn.

[ A wry smile forms on her lips. It's an echo of what Maleficent had told her once, and what Xehanort had told Maleficent so long ago. ]

If you lose control, I can bind you for a short amount of time. It's effective, but it lasts only long enough for me to evacuate anyone nearby. If that's something you feel would be best, I'll do it when the moon comes.

Seems to be the kind of friends I attract.

[He looks exasperated but his posture relaxes. At least he can be sure there'll be people to keep him in check.]

I'd rather at least get to an abandoned part of town, first. If you can keep me from heading for one of the defense camps it'll be enough.

[ In return, she smiles lightly. That, she can do. Hopefully, they can make it there in time, before the moon rises high in the sky and he loses himself. ]

Of course. Are you alright to walk?

Yeah, I'll make it well enough. Haven't found anything that can take me down yet, and I don't plan on making these beasts the first.

[He takes that as a cue to get going, and shoves his hands in his pockets. Picking a direction away from the trees, Nyx starts moving. Hell, maybe camping in a boathouse wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe as a werewolf he wouldn't be too keen on swimming.]

Of course.

[ He's strong and fast and more than capable. As Aqua walks next to him, she can't help but try to figure out what exactly went wrong.

And "worried" doesn't begin to describe how she's feeling now. ]

Nyx? May I ask you something?

Shoot. [No hesitation. At this point she could ask him anything she wanted. He doesn't have much room to deny her even if he had wanted to.]

How did you get... bitten? Was it one of the wolves, or did you run into someone...?

A wolf got the better of me, that first night. Ashamed to admit I wasn't at my best at the time, and fighting for hours took a bigger toll than I wanted. Bastards are smart enough to take advantage of any weakness they can find.

I don't see any shame in that. It happens to the best of us.

[ A pause, as she mulls over his response. ]

Were you hurt beforehand--on a quest, or patrolling?

We ran into the bogeyman last week. Didn't necessarily go looking for it, but it sure found us.

The bogeyman? I suppose by now, anything is possible... Is it still around?

I don't know. We lost it in the woods and hadn't seen it since. Admittedly we haven't been looking, either. [He gestures to indicate their current predicament.]

If it is I-

[He cuts himself off, not sure he wants to continue.]

[ She reaches out to put a hand on his arm. ]

If it is, we'll fight it until it's gone.

[He smiles, relieved at the dodge around the topic. He doesn't want to admit that he's scared of what it'll make him see if it comes back.]

Hopefully it'll stay in those damn woods until we figure out how to chase these wolves off. No one deserves that kind of job.

The bogeyman and these bloodthirsty wolves... Even for all of us, I think we might have our hands full if we had to deal with both.

For now I just want to get through the night without killing someone.

[It's not hard to get clear from any other residents, not with everyone pretty much banding together to survive. His skin is starting to itch fiercely.]

[ Gently, she squeezes his arm. ]

I'll do everything in my power to keep anyone from getting hurt. You included.

You know, I'm supposed to be the one protecting you.

[There's a shadow of a grin as he submits to trusting that they'll get through the night intact.]

[ She lets out the quietest laugh. ]

That's hardly fair. We'll protect each other, instead.
