Let us partake. [So giving thanks for the food he takes one for himself. It has a faint smell like mochi, but it does not have the beans mixed through it like he's used to. Wondering what kind of daifuku it is, he puts it whole in his mouth, bites down-- and instantly regrets everything.

He tastes the sweet, juicy strawberry, soft mochi, and ash. Eyes widening in shock, he at once lowers his head and covers his eyes. This is horrible- just too horrible. Ah-! Midoriya! Forcing himself to swallow he chokes out-]

Don't eat it, Midoriya-dono-!

[It's probably too late, isn't it.]

I am so sorry... I did not realize...

[It...definitely is too late. Izuku's already taking a bite of the dessert by the time Tonbokiri tries to warn him.

Wow, it's the ashy taste again. He definitely hasn't missed it. Izuku's face scrunches as he forces himself to swallow the bite.]

I-it's okay. [Give him a second to recover.] You didn't know about it! [He frowns at what's left of the daifuku in his hands.] That seems like a terrible reward, though.

It is...
It is just too horrible...

[This is perhaps the most defeated Tonbokiri has ever looked, his shoulders slumped and a hand hiding his eyes again. (Are there tears? There might be a tear or two.)]

I can tell, this is some sort of new daifuku, isn't it? The combination of mochi, strawberry, and is it supposed to be anko? ... I wish I could taste it properly!

It was a reward from the town... I did not consider that it would be like this.

[Sweets usually recover him from exhaustion! But this just made him feel worse.]

Hmmm. [His analytical mind makes itself known when he studies the dessert in earnest after Tonbokiri says that.]

I'm guessing one of the ingredients doesn't have its color back yet. Is daifuku your favorite kind of dessert, Tonbokiri-san?

[Stirring himself out of his dismay, he looks back up at Midoriya. And then promptly looks slightly abashed at that question. Not just 'dessert', but 'food'.]

Yes, it is. It was the first thing I ate after gaining this body, you see... It made an impression on me.
I have heard that there are many other varieties of daifuku. I would like to try them.

[Oh, that's really endearing, Tonbokiri!]

That makes sense! I think anyone would have a really strong impression of the first thing they ate if they were in your shoes. [Izuku smiles at Tonbokiri reassuringly.]

If we ever have all the ingredients for daifuku or if anyone gets it as a reward for a quest, you'll be the first one I tell!

Haha... I guess... if you ever see something that looks like soba around here, let me know! It's my friend's favorite food, and he wasn't allowed to eat the ones that kept popping up around him.

[He smiles at Tonbokiri.] I can't think of anything else right now.

[He grins a little in return - of course he would be thinking of his friend, and not himself. He is such a kind young man.]

That's all right. We never know what might come up here, after all.

Thank you very much for taking the time to visit me, Midoriya-dono. [He bows slightly and adds as his face is lowered,] It truly is good to see you.

Of course! [Scrambling a little, Izuku returns the bow easily.]

You're a good friend, Tonbokiri-san. I wanted to make sure that you made it through the trial okay.

[A good friend-!
He has many good and trusted comrades, but 'friend'...! It is a relationship that he does not often get to experience.]

Likewise, Midoriya-dono.

[Wait- does this mean he might have to change how he addresses the boy? He falls silent, momentarily flustered.]

[Izuku looks up at him, tilting his head when he picks up on Tonbokiri's abrupt change in expression.]

Is...something wrong?

[He quickly shakes his head, smiling reassuringly.]

No, not at all. Quite the opposite- I was surprised, is all.

[Though Izuku smiles back, almost reflexively, the curiosity still lingers.]

Surprised by what?

[He will never deny him an answer, although this feels a bit strange to admit--]

To be called 'friend'. It is a little unusual for me, but quite welcome.

[It's a surprise for Izuku, too.]

Oh... you've never been called a friend by the other tsukumogami?

Ah, well, I don't mean it in a bad way. And perhaps some do regard me like that. I've just not ...heard it?

[Sorry, it feels like he's just trying to explain it away...
He rubs at his cheek as he tries to find the word to explain the feeling--]

We are all comrades, which is another sort of friendship.

Ohh. You've never had a friendship outside of...those you're already comrades with.

[He thinks he gets it.]

Well...I'd be happy to be your first friend of that kind!

[He is nodding, thinking, 'just so- he can put just the right words to it-" and then freezes completely.]

Y-you would? [This is indeed a first. He blinks, blushing slightly, then smiling broadly extends his hand for a handshake.]

I would be most pleased to accept your offer, and return it in kind. [He is uncertain of how one accepts friendship, but this should be acceptable?]

[It's totally acceptable, Tonbokiri! A bit formal, but hey, Izuku can roll with it. He takes Tonbokiri's hand in his, grip surprisingly strong as he shakes it.]

Of course I would! Why wouldn't I?

[It's also a treat to see Tonbokiri flustered like this and a part of Izuku is all too happy that he was able to get such a reaction from him.]

Haha- indeed, for you called me 'friend' first.

[That firm grip is rather unexpected for one so young, but he simply does not judge by appearance. (He knows too many child-like tantou that can cut circles around him.)
Feeling somehow refreshed from this, he smiles more easily.]

Your visit allowed me to experience something quite special. Thank you.

You don't have to thank me for that. [Tonbokiri gets another bright smile out of Izuku for that, even as he shakes his head.]

Being able to make friends... it means a lot to me. If anything, I should be thanking you for accepting my friendship in the first place.
