[ That first week of June. ]

[ If you are a teenager or younger, regardless of whether or not this young woman has met you, she's looking incredibly upset the minute she gets a good look at you. This is a prelude to her hurrying over, gaze anxious, as she looks you over and-- ]

This is... definitely going to be a weird question, but are you actually hurt?

[ SHE MIGHT LOOK LIKE SHE'S ABOUT TO CRY. ]

[ Alternatively, she can be spotted making a much slower way around the town. Slower because she's apparently decided to use her necktie as a blindfold, and even Maya isn't about to go sprinting about an area where she can't see.

It won't stop her from bumping into someone, or-- ]

Whoops! Sorry!!

[ A tree. Or the well. Or literally anything else, but she doesn't seem keen to take that blindfold off? Wonder why???? ]

Well! I've learned something new and I'll continue to learn more about you, so I think that's something to be even more positive about!

[ This leads to better friendship; she's genuinely excited. ]

[ Elizabeth laughs a little as she nods ]

You're really good at this quest, you know? If I didn't know better, I'd say it was directed at you.

[ But she's definitely teasing, since with another little nod, she adds: ]

I'm glad. I think I needed this kind of positivity too.

Are you feeling better?

[ not that she seemed like she was feeling down, but... ]

[ She nods ]

Much. Before I was... [ She trails off thoughtfully, since if she's going to explain it, she has to put a positive spin on it. So after a moment's consideration, she thinks she has it. ]

I was seeing home everywhere I went. Inside, anyways. But home is... not somewhere I want to go back to. [ To put it lightly. But more cheerfully, she adds: ] But it does make me glad that I'm here. Even if this town is strange and even stranger things happen all the time, the people in it are wonderful. It isn't quite what I dreamed of when I left, but I definitely like it here, strangeness and all.

[ ... She's definitely curious about the kind of life Elizabeth's led-- but Maya additionally understands that some things are better left not asked about until the person in question is ready to talk about them.

So, simply, she nods. ]

I think there are definitely worse places to be stuck in. This one, at least, has extremely good company and a nice view of the forest.

[ She nods in agreement, though her smile does turn a bit wry ]

I think it'd be better if a little less of what lived in the forest was dangerous enough to breathe fire... But it's not bad at all.

[ She'd tackled a goose! A fire breathing goose! Where else would she be able to do that? ]

If nothing else, even if the town is, um, simple, it's rarely boring.

I'll say. I'm from a much bigger city, and this place could almost rival it in terms of liveliness.

[ In a different way, granted. ]

[ She's not sure if this place is as lively as a big city, but at the same time... She guesses she doesn't actually know. So instead— ]

Oh, where are you from? I might not know it, but maybe!

Sumaru City-- it's in Japan.

[ and hopefully it'll go back to normal now and gods will stop trying to fuck it up!! ]

[ She shakes her head with a little laugh ]

No... I haven't heard of it, unfortunately. I don't know very much about Japan at all, actually. There weren't many books to read about it.

[ She opens her mouth to ask about it, but it occurs to her that there's a better question first: ]

Oh, wait, before that— What year is it where you're from?

Year... 1999. Why?

[ well honestly, that's a good question Elizabeth's asking, isn't it-- ]

[ Elizabeth nods, since she's well used to most people being well ahead of her, but also, well. Different times aren't that strange to her in the first place. ]

Oh, because it's 1912 where I'm from. The year someone is from can make a lot of difference for what it's like.

-- I'll say! I would have thought we'd have a harder time understanding each other with that kind of time gap...

Well... I know at least a little about, um, the future. Enough that it doesn't surprise me?

[ It's not perfect, since she could only ever see the future through windows--at least for the past several years. But watching was at least something. ]

It's... something I can do. There are these things—Tears—and I can open them. It makes a kind of window to another world. Most of the time, I just see where I lived, but a little different, but sometimes I got to see something wonderful. A city under the sea, or just Paris in the future. So I know a little. Or I guess just enough, really.

So it's not just other places, but other times? That's amazing, Elizabeth! Have you always been able to do that?

[ Look, she's riveted. Journalist instincts. ]

[ She nods ]

As long as I can remember, anyways. There are Tears all over Columbia, so it's been easy to find them and open them up. Years ago, I used to be able to make them, but... I don't know. Something changed.

[ She shrugs, since she really doesn't know why she's not able to anymore, but... She does have some very broad guesses. It's easy to blame Comstock for it. ]

Mm... even so, that's still an impressive ability. The things you'd get to see when normally you wouldn't have the opportunity...

[ That's so cool?? ]

It's amazing.

[ There's a genuine enthusiasm in her voice, because seeing those wondrous sights is what gave her a reprieve from her confinement. It's what gave her a dream of Paris. Though she does add with a laugh: ]

...Though most of the time, it's just where I live. But still. To see something incredible, even if it's only one in a hundred times, it's worth it.

I can imagine! Do you think you could show me sometime?

[ Maya... naturally curious. ]

[ She laughs a little and gives a small shrug ]

Well... I don't actually know yet. Maybe? Usually I can only show people Tears when there's one already around that I can open up, and I haven't seen one here. But when I was a girl, I used to be able to make them. I mentioned it to someone here, so I'm going to try again.

[ And it's clear that she's both a little nervous and a little excited about that possibility ]

So if it goes well... Yes, I could. But I have no idea what it might open to.
