[ That first week of June. ]

[ If you are a teenager or younger, regardless of whether or not this young woman has met you, she's looking incredibly upset the minute she gets a good look at you. This is a prelude to her hurrying over, gaze anxious, as she looks you over and-- ]

This is... definitely going to be a weird question, but are you actually hurt?

[ SHE MIGHT LOOK LIKE SHE'S ABOUT TO CRY. ]

[ Alternatively, she can be spotted making a much slower way around the town. Slower because she's apparently decided to use her necktie as a blindfold, and even Maya isn't about to go sprinting about an area where she can't see.

It won't stop her from bumping into someone, or-- ]

Whoops! Sorry!!

[ A tree. Or the well. Or literally anything else, but she doesn't seem keen to take that blindfold off? Wonder why???? ]

[ Oh.

"Oh" applies to a lot of things here, because a.) why is Lupin shirtless, b.) why is Lupin surprisingly built, c.) oh shoot, she's done a terrible job at masking her own emotions if he has to ask about it.

The realization that he has gaudy clown pants is somewhere in there, acknowledgment of what he'd meant, but Maya's a little too preoccupied pressing her wrist to the corners of her eyes. ]

Sorry! I got a little overwhelmed, I'm fine--

[ maybe a bit watery-voiced, but fine. ]

[ Maya's tears automatically trump any and all concerns about his dumb clown pants and state of undress. He hasn't known her that long, but he knows her to be a kind, good person, and even if she'd been nothing but cruel to him, it would go against every fiber of his being to not do something about this. He takes a few steps back, beckoning her into his house worriedly. ]

You don't look fine. Come inside and sit down - talk to me.

[ Great. She's gone and worried him, even though he's apparently dealing with a wardrobe/appearance malfunction. It wasn't exactly the way Maya had wanted to greet him, but at the same time, this is a kind of strain on her that she isn't used to.

So in she steps, doing her best not to actually rub at her eyes because that's not exactly going to make them look any less red. ]

Did I interrupt something?

[ He's got a towel-- did he just make it back from bathing? ]

[ he wishes it was that simple! but no, it's his stupid shapeshifting wardrobe, out to humiliate him in front of cute girls and good friends. Her comment briefly redirects his attention to how he must look right now, and he sighs, dragging a hand down his face. If she looks closely, she might see a bit of a blush peeking out from behind his fingers. ]

No... I'm having what you could call a wardrobe malfunction. I'm guessing this is supposed to be my punishment for failing the town's little test.

[ he shuts the door behind them, then gestures forward, directing her towards the humble living room in this house. ]

It's inappropriate, I know, so... just try to ignore it, and when this is done, we can pretend it never happened. [ a pause. ] Whatever you're going through seems worse, anyhow.

[ ... He's blushing. That's adorable, and Maya can at least muster a smile at his attempt to hide it. It's good to know, at least, that the punishments aren't all incredibly traumatizing or dangerous to one's health.

Besides, he's built. It's a nice view, though that's an incredibly distant thought of hers as she follows him. Especially with what he says next. ]

Let's just say that however these punishments work, whoever came up with them really knows how to get to you.

he's not self-conscious beyond average Victorian discomfort with being undressed in front of a woman, at least, and even that isn't so bad, since it's just Maya, who surely doesn't care. He takes a seat on an old couch that's been here since he first showed up; it creaks vaguely in offense, but it's still holding up. ]

... If I can do anything to help you, tell me. I hate to see a beautiful woman look so distressed. [ the comment is less of a flirt and more his honest feelings; he sounds quite serious as he looks at her, in spite of his colorful pantaloons. ] You're always smiling. It makes me worried to see you like this.

... I'm sorry.

[ She wants to smile. In most cases, she could smile, even if it was forced and not actually reflective of her current mood. But right now, it's gotten to her, and Maya can't just shove this turmoil of feelings down this time.

As she settles on the other end of the couch, she stares down at her hands. ]

I've been seeing people hurt.

-- Rather, I've been seeing the kids, covered in all sorts of injuries that look entirely too real and horrendous. Logically, I know they don't exist, but...

[ that seems so much more grave than his personal affliction that he's almost offended. Does the town take him that lightly?! He cares about kids too, you know...

But they're not talking about him. They're talking about her. He gives her a sympathetic glance. ]

Seeing is believing. Even if you logically know it's not real, logic doesn't make it any easier to look at. [ a pause. ] That seems like an awfully harsh punishment compared to mine.

[ he can't imagine she did anything that terrible... ]

Well, you seemed pretty miserable yourself!

[ with a laugh-- small, but genuine. ]

It might just be something personally catered to us.

... So the town thinks that my embarrassment over wearing these pants is equal to the feeling you get when you see hurt kids? I'm actually offended.

[ he's not that shallow!! he has a deep heart full of compassion and capacity for caring... but, apparently, his dignity and desire to look good when he's out and about are more outstanding characteristics. Lupin might need to rethink his lifestyle. ]

I think it's just that I don't really feel embarrassment. I guess the town just had to try extra hard with figuring out what would bother me-- even though I'm sure if this was happening to you, you'd have just as hard a time with it.

[ It's hard to feel victorious over this when it's making her miserable, but Lupin definitely seems offended, so-- placating it is. ]

... I'm sorry.

[ oops, this isn't what he wanted. He immediately lifts up his hands in a show of defeat, shaking his head. ]

Please, Maya - I don't want an apology. It's not that serious. Besides, I'm the one who should be taking care of you right now.

Old habits die hard.

[ with a tired smile. ]

I've been called the big sister type before, so getting taken care of is a little strange for me.

All right, then. How old are you?

Twenty-three. Asking a lady's age, though...

[ no, she doesn't mind. ]

[ he grins, ignoring her age comment completely... don't call him out when he slips up on being a gentleman. ]

[ he's not ashamed of his victory, even if it's only by one year. ]
