Oh. [Izuku loosens his grip on the guitar's neck sheepishly. Then, he does as Riku suggests, gently and carefully strums downward with the pick, this time making sure that he hits all of the strings on the way down.]

Oh, that sounded a lot better!

[doublesharp]

[Look at that! It probably isn't a big enough accomplishment to clap over, but Riku's clapping anyway with a smile.]

That was great, Midoriya-kun! I've never taught anyone how to play before, but I guess a chord is next? When you press down the strings with your left hand, it changes the sound. So I'm going to move your fingers real fast, okay?

[Don't mind him as he leans forward to adjust Izuku's fingers, placing them in the position for a C chord.]

Okay, so make sure your left hand stays like that, and then strum down on all of the strings again like you did earlier!

[Even though Izuku knows that it isn't that big a deal, he grins at Riku when he starts clapping anyway. Improvement!]

Okay...so it's the position of the left hand that changes the notes? [He studies the placement Riku's moved him to for a moment before strumming down again, like Riku asked. And then another C chord, with a smile, when it comes out right.] Wait...doesn't this mean you have to memorize the left hand positions for each chord?

Yeah, exactly! It's the hardest part of learning for sure... memorizing the chords is most of the work. But after doing it for a while, it'll come naturally!

[Of course, he nods happily.]

The one you're doing right now is called a C chord. If you press down different strings, the sound will be totally different too!

I didn't realize it was so complicated! [And to think he's seen some musicians play music that's incredibly quick. That's skill, right there.]

Let's see.. [Izuku shifts his hand, pressing down on different strings this time before playing a chord again.] Can you teach me a few chords? For one of your songs.

[doublesharp]

One of my songs? Sure, I can do that! Let's see.... I think the chorus of my unit's newest song would be best! It isn't too hard, but it sounds really, really cool on an electric guitar! I wish I could plug mine in and show you, but....

[No electricity, not that it's anything new.]

This will do for now! Okay, so for the first chord, put your fingers like this.

[Which, of course, he demonstrates before allowing Izuku to put his fingers in place. If he needs any help, Riku will gently put his fingers in the right place!]

I wish I could hear it! [Seeing how excited Riku gets when he's talking about his work as an idol is incredibly endearing, and Izuku thinks it's a shame that there's no way to actually experience those songs himself.]

Ah, like this... and this... [He's very determined to get this right! Izuku copies Riku's hand placement before playing the chord.]
