[ caramia is so welcoming, so healing to be around! when he isn't falling off the roof or breaking down into tears at the edge of the forest, he has a presence that makes dextera feel quite safe. he's relieved, as well, that ochako was allowed to come along without issue—as he's thought since he invited her, it'll be nice to have another person to know it.

he's mute, not deaf! but it'll be handy for practice anyway. ]

[ dextera politely ducks his head when he enters caramia's home, taking a seat wherever it looks like there's the most room for the three of them.

snacks and company and learning something useful!! what a good day this will be!! ]

[Snacks. The thought alone causes Ochako to straighten up the slightest bit, because boy, oh boy, she is so tired of eating nothing but grilled fish. As if she needed another reason to adore Caramia...

But she can—and will—drool over the snacks at a later time; for now, she's happy to simply follow her friends inside.]

Thank you, Caramia. It's always fun to learn something new, don't you think? [She takes a seat in the chair beside Dextera, shooting him a grin as she does so.] Especially when you're learning with a friend. Let's give it our all!

[ Did I mention that he's proud of these two very good beans? Because he was. Look at them. He felt like he might actually tear up a bit because these two were his friends and he loved them a bunch. They're so cute, just... slay him, honestly.

He's going to shower them with affection later. But, for now, focus on the task at hand. Caramia took his own seat after he grabbed the bowl of apples and oranges (healthy snacks for kids) cut and peeled off to the side. ]

Okay! Where to even begin... I guess I should ask, Ochako, Dex, do you know what fingerspelling is?

[ dextera doesn't know exactly what it is, but it's easy enough to get an impression—rather than signing out full words, fingerspelling is just using the alphabet to spell things out, right? it's probably a little less convenient than learning a full language, but that can come in time. for now, spelling is enough.

so he nods, and even lifts his hand to mimic that brief A-B-C caramia quickly showed him in the forest! he's a fast learner, but all the moreso because he needs to know this. ]

[She pays close attention to Dextera's quick movements, because even though she doesn't know what he signed, she's guessing that she's going to learn soon enough.

But hmm, yes, back to the question at hand. She straightens up, making sure to sit up straight like she does whenever she's called on in class. This is all very serious.]

It's... exactly what it sounds like, right? Spelling things one letter at a time?

Oh, wow, signore. You really remembered that? [ It was only three, sure, but Caramia still found that impressive. It took him a good three or four times to really memorize something. ] But yes! That's it exactly. It's a convenient stand in until you can learn the other stuff.

[ He demonstrated the alphabet as he knew it for his two new students, once slowly, than making them mirror his motions afterwards. Even if it was basic, he repeated himself quite a bit, making sure the two of them really had it down. After all, this was a much more convenient way for Dex to communicate if they could get it down right.

About an hour passed. He had been increasingly the two to start spelling simple words and had spoke letters for them to sign at him, and he was quite proud of their progress, really. But, he certainly wouldn't have been a good teacher if he didn't give them a break, and, besides, the fruit bowl certainly wasn't going to eat itself while their hands were busy! ]

[ caramia is an excellent teacher, and dextera is pleased with the progress he's made already. by the time the day is over, he's sure that he's going to have this down, and he can finally communicate with people without relying on writing on their palms or in his notebook. neither are guaranteed, with the way things are in this town, but he can almost always use his hands for himself. ]

[ when caramia calls for a break, dextera nods. this has all been a perfect distraction from the less fun things happening in his personal life, and he doesn't even seem distraught in the interim. he reaches for some of the fruit, quietly slipping a berry between his lips like he's shy about being caught eating. ]

[Ochako is... less pleased with her own progress, but that's okay! The more she practices, the better she'll get, and she's determined to become very, very good at this whole finger-spelling thing. It will be nice, she thinks, to talk to Dextera more often, and this will certainly make it a bit easier for them.

But heck yes, Caramia, those snacks are very much appreciated! She leans back for a moment, happily munching on an apple slice as she goes over the signs in her mind. There are three signs in particular that she's focusing on, and when she's absolutely sure that she has them down—]

Caramia! Thank you very much for the food. Everything is— [Bear with her, please, as she brings one hand up and slowly spells out a word: Y-U-M-M-Y. Her form can use a bit of improvement, it's true, but as she beams up at her teacher, she's... pretty darn sure that she used the correct signs.] And the lesson has been really fun, too!

[ Regardless how pleased either was with their progress, Caramia is proud of both of them, at least. Honestly, memorizing the hand motions came pretty hard for Caramia, too. Not everyone can be gifted a brain that remembers everything, after all.

Caramia chuckled from Ochako's appreciation, regardless. It wasn't as if he had gone through any trouble to make stuff- they were just food. But, he certainly wasn't going to mock her for that or anything. Quite the opposite, along with saying it aloud, he made the sign for "Grazie". ]

Hopefully, it'll stick the more you use it. It's nothing more than just memorizing motions, after all. And you both are free to come around weekly for these more lessons. Hopefully it'll make comm-

[ Much to Caramia's dismay, he was cut short by a loud bleat. The sound even made the lion sit more upright in his chair, irises thinning like an alarmed cat. And soon after, in came scuttling in the monstrosity of a spider/deer hybrid that Henry just had to keep around as a pet. Looked like he was curious about the new visitors? Or maybe he just wanted food??? Probably the latter, really, since he was making a beeline (with all eight weird, scuttle-y legs) for the bowl. ]

[ learning hand motions is different from learning a full language, just yet, but dextera has been hungry for this kind of knowledge since he realized how limited he was when he came here. he watches caramia's hands when he signs that "grazie," too, and he commits that gesture to memory. he repeats it, to himself, just in time for the...

the thing. the thing, coming into the room. ]
