[ Like much of the town, the old city hall building sits on unsteady legs. Brick and stone chipped away by time, or lack of care, but the building itself is still standing, roof mostly intact. It stands out from the buildings beside it, columns lining along the front windows and dilapidated steps leading up to the main entrance. It needs some work, but it's big. It will do. ]

I'll second that.

[It's just a given that if Nyx and Noctis are here, Ignis is going to be, too — might as well make it a big Insomnian party, after all. Still, he's keeping a relatively low profile, and he's surreptitiously declined to don a nametag tonight, which if asked he'll say is because he doesn't want the sticker glue on his clothes, which is true but also a complete lie.]

Not out of any lack of faith in the talents of our youth, of course. But rather simply that it's not an obligation they ought to be made to bear.

I don’t disagree with both of your points, but a lot of the kids here already have to deal with fighting back home. I also was raised to fight. [ Since like age 5, so maybe he’s desensitized. ] The more adults we get, the better. But sometimes you’ll find kids better off than adults in battle.

I don’t want to force or guilt anyone into joining something like this, or prevent them, either. This is to defend everyone. If you believe in it, then volunteer. If I really do end up handing out orders, it’ll just be in ways to make sure everyone is as safe as possible. I can take responsibility for that.

Naturally. My concern isn't so much with conscientious volunteers as with those who may feel as though they have no other choice.

[He adjusts his glasses slightly, relieved to have them back on his face where they belong, and where he can fiddle with them in moments like this.]

"I want to help, but fighting is the only thing I know how to do" — it's that sort of mentality that I'm out to address. Certainly there are enough opportunities here and a wide enough range of talented mentors that no one should feel as though fighting is their only option. I think it's safe to assume that skilled adults have, at least in some capacity, chosen their life of battle. Our youth ought to be extended the same opportunity to choose, and to make it clear that there is a choice.

But then, Ichinose-dono has a good point too. He himself also knows that the young can be excellent fighters. But in this case-

This is not the place any of us are from. Those who had to fight should not be obligated to here.

Ichinose-dono has been gathering information about our skills, and has even sparred with some us in person. [He nods at the man to acknowledge and address him.] Should it come to it, I believe you will arrange the volunteers appropriately.

Yeah. [He likes what Ignis has to say. This isn't home— it's not the apocalypse. People aren't being forced to fight, yet. And he won't mention that it may come to that, where people have to fight to survive— but not right now.]

It's entirely optional. If you'll all trust me, I can handle arrangements and organize things as best as I can, but our safety will still rely more on who joins. [There's a grateful nod to everyone who has said they wouldn't mind him stepping up.] Consider it heavily— are you willing to put your life before others?

[In his opinion, doing so will be putting their lives in his hands, if he's the one who ends up commanding this thing in any sort of way. Even if it's just telling people to watch one area or patrol another, or if something happens and they need to organize further... it's on him. So, of course he's going to do his best to make sure no harm comes to anyone.

But everyone who joins something should do it by choice, knowing the risk.] Then we'll gladly take you. Anyone who's worried they're not strong enough can still help, too. There's a place for everyone's strengths.

Yeah, I might look young, but I do this sort of thing as my job.

[Estelle had been planning to volunteer regardless, but she could understand the concern, too. She knew people who'd been forced to learn to fight, after all. But for her it was different.]

I'm no soldier, but defending and protecting people is my first priority as a bracer, and that doesn't change just because I'm in some other world. So count me in, Guren. Joshua too probably, since we're partners.
