Who told you so, dilly dilly, Who told you so? ‘Twas my own heart, dilly dilly, That told me so.
ouch is one of the most intimate, romantic ways to be close to someone else. The Town knows this very well -- the Town wants everyone to be as close as possible.
Perhaps that's why this bonding is so...aggressive.
Because you're in for quite the shock on this otherwise peaceful day when you brush against the next person on your path.
Maybe you're going out of your way to touch people. Maybe you've got a terrible urge to just see what's lurking in someone's heart. Maybe you trip over a conveniently placed rock -- whatever the cause, you're getting an up close and personal look into someone else's heart.

it’s as plain as day, really, now that it’s been spoken aloud—his empty heart is because he never really recovered from the loss of his brother. even now, when they’re in this town together, it’s not the same as having the chance to grow up alongside him. ]
[ akira is right. even if people disappear, even if dextera constantly struggles with feeling like half a person, there are people who care about him. people who want him to be safe and whole. ]
…
[ before dextera can respond to that, though, the darkness closes in with an impossible speed, snuffing the light between them like dousing a candle. he can’t even call out to akira with no voice in his throat, and when he gropes forward in a terrified instant, his hands find nothing. for akira, too, the sensation must be similar—and then, all at once, as if nothing happened, they’re back in town. ]
[The sudden wrench out of the world was jarring, and frightening, but Akira takes it mostly in stride at this point. It's better than half-running, half-tumbling down the side of a pyramid as it implodes. It's better than watching an explosion engulf your friend in fire.
And then he's back in the real world, looking around to get his bearings now that it isn't so dark. After a moment, he focuses on Dextera, reaching out a hand to him the way he couldn't in the last moment.]

Akira mulls over his response for a moment, feeling the quiver in the air as he does so.]
...You got the literal heart. But in its place, you have this void, because of what happened to your brother.
[It makes sense. It's always a metaphor for something.]]

[ dextera nods.

It hurts… being alone.

[Maybe not as acutely as Dextera does, but he knows. It's sad and it's terrifying and it makes it hard to move on sometimes.]
...But, at least here, you aren't alone. People care about you, Dextera-san. And they care about your brother, too.
[Even if he doesn't really know him... Akira is sure, because that's how the people here are.]

...We're back.
[Is Dextera okay?]
