ouch is one of the most intimate, romantic ways to be close to someone else. The Town knows this very well -- the Town wants everyone to be as close as possible.
Perhaps that's why this bonding is so...aggressive.
Because you're in for quite the shock on this otherwise peaceful day when you brush against the next person on your path.
Maybe you're going out of your way to touch people. Maybe you've got a terrible urge to just see what's lurking in someone's heart. Maybe you trip over a conveniently placed rock -- whatever the cause, you're getting an up close and personal look into someone else's heart.

Capitalism. [Thanks Percy.] Don't worry, the next gift-giving holiday after this is Christmas again. I think people just like having excuses to do nice things for other people.

It's greed and overpriced candy, but it can be romantic or whatever. [A half-smile.] Last year Hera kidnapped me and erased my memories and I was living with a pack of wolves.
[So. There's that.] Didn't exactly have a chance to plan for a special date or anything.
Yeah, real wolves. And Lupa who was actually a Roman wolf-goddess? She helped me train for months when I had no idea who I was or what was happening.
[But okay, fair. There's a faint smile following and he tilts his head when he hears Annabeth laugh somewhere far off.] I guess that's good enough. She might even agree with you. [His eyes seem to train themselves on the kitchen then.] I've seen her a lot recently, but she's always been an illusion. I'm sort of afraid of what'll happen the next time I really see her in person.
[Demigods in Percy's home are so strange. They certainly lead stranger lives than most of the humans Val has run into in his life. Then again they do seem to deal with the end of the world more often than is strictly appropriate for teenagers.
Even Val only had to deal with it once. (He assumes.)]
Hmm... I've seen my comrades in my dreams, but it's not the same thing as seeing them in person. More reason to make the reunion special.
[He's not wrong. It's a little too often, but that's just how it goes when you're a half-blood.]
I saw her in a dream, too. It felt a little too real, and sometimes I wonder if it was? Sometimes that happens. [Prophetic dreaming, man. The sound of Annabeth's voice is closer now.] I know you're right, but we still don't know how long this is going to take. And we know that people at home don't know we're gone, but what about people who were here that might not have gone home yet?
[Whoever's voice that is must be important, otherwise it wouldn't be so easy to hear. Even if he has no way to place it-- maybe the girl Percy speaks so fondly of?]

As for the people who aren't here but may not have left... that's harder to say for certain. We'll have to track down those missing people before we can pin down an answer.
Sometimes. We can see visions of what's going on in our dreams sometimes...it's complicated to explain. The people aren't really there, but we can see real events as they're happening.
[He huffs for the time being.] So what you're saying is we have to go back into the forest and see if we can find anything. Again. Maybe we're looking in all of the wrong places.
Not really. Just a dream about Annabeth but that might have been because of a wish. [There's a flash of movement from the kitchen again and Percy hyper-focuses there.]
I want to look at the water again. There has to be something left in the ocean.
