Perhaps that's why this bonding is so...aggressive.
Because you're in for quite the shock on this otherwise peaceful day when you brush against the next person on your path.
Maybe you're going out of your way to touch people. Maybe you've got a terrible urge to just see what's lurking in someone's heart. Maybe you trip over a conveniently placed rock -- whatever the cause, you're getting an up close and personal look into someone else's heart.

[ To be fair, it's Jion's bad. He mostly meant to catch Dextera's attention to ask him if he's been okay since that cannibalism(?) incident -- his organs are produced for transplants, after all, not consumption, and he's not sure if the flatworm genes might have caused a stomachache or something. So he'd gone to tap Dextera on the arm, and then ... ?! ]

[ It's rasped out a little breathlessly in his shock, and Jion is frozen stock-still for a moment. His breaths sound feel they're echoing in his ears, and he almost trips when he stumbles forward a half-step, disoriented by the weird tactile sensation.
Thank god he's not here alone, at least. Though he's still visibly rattled, Jion also looks immensely guilty when he turns to Dextera. ]
-- sorry! Sorry, I ... [ 'Have no idea what happened,' he meant to say. But that's not helpful, so he instead goes for: ] Are you okay?
[ the light glows softly in dextera’s hand, something that looks like it might be white-hot but strangely seems as cool as an ocean pearl at the same time. dextera knows it well, but what he isn’t used to is the presence of someone else in this empty place. ]
[ He's clearly a little frazzled by this weird dark space, and Jion copes by focusing on very specific, singular things. Like the fact that Dextera is apparently okay. That's good. That's important. He nods in turn, a little hastily. Then he inhales deeply and exhales slowly. Again, slowly calming himself down. ]
... okay. Sorry, I was kinda surprised for a moment there. But I guess we're ... alright. I guess it's just dark here, huh? Not actually dangerous or anything?
[ but, he doesn’t want to worry someone he barely knows, so he finds himself nodding instead—just to try to reassure jion that nothing is going to come and kill them. if this place is anything like what he suspects it is, then the only thing to worry about is the vast emptiness. ]
[ Dextera seems ... worried? It's a little hard to tell in this darkness, with just the one light source, but Jion regards him fretfully for a moment.
And then he inhales deeply and slaps himself in the face with both hands. He has to pull himself together! ]
-- it's okay! [ He looks to Dextera and gives a firm nod. He's still pretty creeped out by this darkness, but remaining calm in high-stress situations is part of his job. A medic that causes more stress for his patients is a bad one, after all. ] I'm sure it'll be alright. Even if something does come for us, I have your back, okay?
dextera is used to the optimism of others, of course, having spent long enough in this town to know that some people are just really good at it, but jion has no reason to reassure him like this. ]
[ He gives a small smile, doing a damn good job at feigning confidence. ]
Just stick close by me, okay? I'll do my best to make sure you're safe. [ A pause before he laughs awkwardly and adds, ] And I guess I kinda need you to be close by anyway, I'm not sure I'd be any use here without the light. Thanks for that. Is it some sort of magic?
[ dextera shakes his head. he spent a long time thinking magic wasn’t even real, instead all oddities sourcing themselves from god’s power, but now he can make the distinction with a little less bias. it’s not magic, but it’s not not magic, either. ]
[ dextera doesn’t know. he doesn’t think so, but he can’t really feel it for himself, so he shakes his head again. what comes next is probably no less ominous than if it were his soul, however. ]
[ Jion's footsteps stop for a moment as he stares, looking impressed. And then he resumes walking, giving a thoughtful hum. ]
... I guess that's all the more reason I have to try and keep you safe, huh? That's kind of amazing, though! Being able to, um, hold it like that. Is that something you can just do?
[ dextera nods. so he supposes, anyway—he’s never been able to feel these crystals for himself. he only knows anything about them because he understands context, and he turns back, offering the crystal to jion without a second thought. ]
[ He gives a confused blink at first when Dextera holds out the crystal. And then he realizes it's being offered to him, and promptly looks flustered, shaking his head. ]
N-no, it's okay! I, uh, I don't really have any skill with magic-type stuff! And like, it's really cool. [ Really really cool. He's sorely tempted. ] But I'd be pretty nervous about dropping it. Or breaking it.
[ jion’s nervousness oddly, very oddly, puts dextera at ease. this empty space is objectively terrifying, with no way to predict what’s coming or track what’s gone, but when they’re just standing here, with dextera cradling all the potential in the world between his hands, he feels strangely confident in this moment. ]

[ also, it’s not like anyone else is here to witness jion mishandling the whole entire world, or anything. ]
[ A blink and a pause as Jion stares at the light in wonder and curiosity. And then he tentatively holds his hands out. ]
Then, um. If you're sure it'll be okay ... ? [ Asking for it feels weirdly kind of embarrassing, but he also really wants to know what it feels like. ] I'll still be careful!
[ for everything else that’s happened to dextera, this is something he can deal with. he knows the idea sephirah very intimately, and he knows that no one else can do anything with it. especially not here, when it’s dextera’s heart. it’s just kind of nice, to share something and not think of it as a burden he’s handing over.
when was the last time he felt this in control? so he nods, and passes over the crystal. ]

[ considering it’s the entire world, it feels quite small. it’s a nascent thought, after all—possibility, rather than action. an endless well of opportunity but no catalyst for creation. somehow, it feels maternal, too. ]
[ True to his word, Jion does take the crystal with tremendous care, cupping it gently between his hands and looking at it with open awe. And then angling his head to look at it from the side. And then holding it up high, giving an audible 'ooooooh' in amazement. ]

[ He beams excitedly at Dextera. ]
I mean, it's definitely not as big or heavy as I would have expected? But that ... feels like a good thing? It feels good that it's something so bright and warm. It's really neat. [ A small nod to punctuate his feelings before he holds it back out with a sheepish grin. ] Thanks, I feel like I got to experience something really special.
[ jion’s innocence toward it makes it feel… less important than it actually is. technically, it’s not important at all, if it’s just a creation of dextera’s heart, but the concept of it is about as high on the hierarchy of critical things as it can go. the heart of the world. and it got a “cool.” ]
