Who told you so, dilly dilly, Who told you so? ‘Twas my own heart, dilly dilly, That told me so.
ouch is one of the most intimate, romantic ways to be close to someone else. The Town knows this very well -- the Town wants everyone to be as close as possible.
Perhaps that's why this bonding is so...aggressive.
Because you're in for quite the shock on this otherwise peaceful day when you brush against the next person on your path.
Maybe you're going out of your way to touch people. Maybe you've got a terrible urge to just see what's lurking in someone's heart. Maybe you trip over a conveniently placed rock -- whatever the cause, you're getting an up close and personal look into someone else's heart.

[Being vulnerable is difficult, but it's easier with people who already know about his family situation. Even if this Damian is much younger than the one he's used to.
He's never been a good liar, so he just nods. He does miss his mother. Between being here and his remedial classes at home, he hasn't had the time to visit her as often as he'd like.]
[Carrying the stick with him, Damian takes off in a jog toward the sandcastle. Titus lifts his head lazily, but doesn't move, and Damian gives the dog three times his size some head pats.
Near the castle is an elephant ear leaf with a bunch of sticks and twine separated neatly on it. Damian props the stick up and squats down, thoughtfully peering over the twigs before gathering up different sizes of them. Satisfied, he turns around and sits down in the sugary sand.]
I don't know what she looks like, so you'll have to tell me.
[He follows Damian towards the castle and all of the sticks. Taking a seat beside him he takes a moment to think of how to describe his mother.
In the end, he covers the left side of his face with his left hand. Yeah. His mom looks a lot like him.]
Mm... She looks like my right half, but her hair is a lot longer. It goes about to her mid-back. Whenever I see her she looks tired, but she tries her best to smile.
[Whether or not this is weird, Damian doesn't seem to mind.] Okay. [The dolls are rather simple, plus he--or his heart here, technically--is only four. He doesn't have to be too detailed. A wooden, stick figure with long hair and an etched smile and eyes.
It takes him maybe five or ten minutes to bind everything. When he's finished, he turns to his knees in the sand and puts Rei on one of the castle towers. He removes Bruce Wayne and instead puts up another from behind the castle.
A figure with a cape of a leaf and a shell helmet with two pointed ears.] This is Batman. He'll protect your mom.
[To be honest, Shouto hasn't been around enough kids this age that aren't trying to cause trouble to tell if this is weird. It seems better than the kids he had to babysit in remedial classes.
He watches quietly as Damian works, watching his mother be placed in a tower.]
Batman's the guy you really look up to... Okay. I believe he'll keep my mother safe until I can rescue her from her tower.
Yeah. [Batman goes onto one of the sandy towers of the castle, too, near Rei. A protective sentinel of the night despite it being a sunny day. It's fine.] She'll be really safe.
Hey... [He looks between Batman and Rei, and then he slowly glances at Shouto.] What do you do when you miss your mom, but you can't see her?
[Classmates. Hm. There aren't any classmates Damian misses, but there's something like them, so he understands. Thinking about them--Jon, the other four--makes him glow gently and strangely around the edges.] Yeah. [It was weird no to see them every day. It's weird to realize what was taken for granted only when they're not there as usual.]
I miss Dad, and Alfred, and Dick... but... I miss Jon, too, and my teammates.
[The question surprises him, but Damian lowers his eyes thoughtfully and considers whether or not he has anything he'd want to tell them.] Yeah. [But what does he say when he has one chance?]
I'd say... I love them. [The glow brightens, seeping inward.] I'd say they're really important to me, and I miss them when they're gone. Like... I'm not whole anymore. [The glow, though warm, is blinding, and it consumes him from the outside in.] But... I'd tell them not to be scared because... we'll find each other again.
[Shouto watches the glow and nods. Damian is... pretty sweet beyond that pre-teen exterior, which he gets. His life hasn't been easy, but there's still warmth there- in here.]
One day we'll get back to them and we'll be able to say everything we want to.
[Being able to speak his true feelings, the ones he puts in a tightly locked box in a tightly locked box, is a relief. His heart is lighter for it, more free.] Yeah. [The glow consumes him, leaving behind a bright and blinding silhouette. The voice that comes the next time is familiar, slightly deeper, older.]
They may be idiots on multiple occasions, but they're... Family is who you make it.
[The edges of the island world begin to crumble. It isn't a terrifying experience, or it doesn't feel like it should be really. Slowly, like a painting, the world vanishes from the horizon to them. The glow around Damian fades, and Shouto is left with the same thirteen year old pre-teen angst in the middle of town.
Damian regards his palms for a moment or two and then lowers his arms with a small sigh.] Leaving this town can't come quickly enough. [He's being laid bare too often! He hates it!]

I wrote letters to her at home. It feels more personal than just texting her back and forth.
no subject
I can write some anyway.
[Mission One: write letters to his dad.] Do you miss anyone else? [He seems guardedly curious.] I mean, do you miss anyone else back home.

My teachers, and my classmates. Not as much as her. It's just weird not to see them every day.

Is it really that bad?
[Then again this is the boy who spilled his backstory to a guy he only knew for approximately two weeks.]
