[Maribelle has arrived near the woods, fire tome in hand. When she spots Percy, he gets a courteous head-bow.]

[It didn't take him long to head out toward the woods, Riptide in its pen form in his pocket and energy thrumming through his veins. It's nice to actually have something to do, and admittedly he's a little interested in Maribelle's tomes. When she bows her head he grins and gives a wave in return, jogging up to her side.]

So far so good. Can't complain too much. [It's the same old same old. The Town's doing weird stuff, his eyes are still gray, and Mr. F continues to allude them.] Likewise though. You ready to see what we can do?

[One nod before facing the woods.]

Yes... let us pray this is as simple as it sounded.

[expulsions]

I hope so. Usually when it involves the woods it's pretty straight forward. [Lucky for them they won't have to go too far for the woods to be upon them.] It sort of feels like the vines that led us to that castle last month. They were growing everywhere. The trees are getting closer, but we're gonna have to be careful about where they're going, I think. Should we try a straight path first?

[troubadamsel]

A straight path is what my magic is meant to do.

[She opens her tome, stepping forward.]

... Be prepared with your water at any moment, all right? I can't help but worry.

[expulsions]

[There's a nod and he's holding his hands up for her to see.] I'll be able to create it when we need to. Let's see how powerful this thing is and get started.

[There's a pause and he points at a spot straight ahead.] There.

[troubadamsel]

All right... here we go.

[The book begins to glow red, and she holds out her hand-]

Elfire!

[And a hot stream of fire shoots straight forward!]

[expulsions]

Nice. [There's a tone of awe and his eyes are wide as he watches the flames dash forward and begin wrapping themselves around the trees ahead, burning down the branches.] Looks like you have more control on it than we thought.

[There's a glance at the tome itself though when it changes color.] That's not hurting your hands or anything, is it?

[She shakes her head.]

No, I won't be burnt. But... using magic takes energy. The more I cast this spell, the weaker I'll become, and need to rest.

[expulsions]

Sounds like any other kind of magic. [With the flames licking up the wood, the ashes begin to sprinkle the ground and Percy steps forward. Pulling a pen out of his pocket, he uncaps it to reveal his sword and start pushing crackling, burning branches back.] What if we take turns? You burn as much as you can before your magic runs out, and while you're resting I can work with Riptide to cut back the trees? I don't want you to tire yourself out just for this.

[Mostly because he's been there. Creating his own water source tends to drain him pretty fast, too. It sucks.]

[She frowns, looking down at her tome.]

It might work... but there's another issue. Aside from me wearing myself out, magical weaponry isn't meant to last forever. The more use it gets, the more damage it takes. Used too much in one succession, and it'll destroy itself.

I'm not saying we can't do it... but we have to keep an eye on it, or we'll lose it for good.

[expulsions]

[That's definitely a problem, and it's one that causes him to stop again. The flames are under control for now. They have time to be smart about this.]

This is going to sound weird, but does it recharge? If we use it and then leave it alone for a while, will we start from the beginning or will it have less uses left?

[troubadamsel]

It'll still have less uses... But the power will remain the same.

I do apologize - I should have informed you beforehand.

[Did she want to know what he was doing? Did she really?

But he was near the woods with a strange look of determination, and given his tendency to land in trouble... sigh. Off she followed.]

I'd better not regret this...

[For the first time, there is a quest that involves fighting something in the woods, and Keigo isn't running away. (Trees would not usually fall into the category of things Keigo didn't want to fight for a quest, but these are creeping magical trees). For the first time, he has a magical weapon clutched in his hand.

He just needs to figure out the best plan of attack. What luck that Maribelle just showed up to help him with that!]

Do termites eat whole trees or just houses?

... I'm afraid I'm not well-versed enough about insects to know...

... What, pray tell, are you thinking?

I got this ring from an old quest.

[He holds it out in the palm of his hand for her to see.]

It lets me summon a bunch of insects. I used it once, and I should be able to use it one more time. But the first time I used it, I just thought I wanted something to fight bees, and it made things worse.

... Hmmm.

[She cups her chin.]

On the one hand, I wouldn't trust it not to make things worse again... On the other hand, having bugs get rid of this seems like a rather peaceful solution...

[From Maribelle, this feels like practically a seal of approval.]

What if I say, "bugs that won't sting people" as part of my spell or wish or whatever it is?

... I can't believe I'm saying this, but you're actually coming up with a decent plan!

[there must have been a nicer way to say that.]

You could have just said it was a good idea.

[That seems to be the plan he should go with, though. He grips the ring a little tighter.]

I want a bug that will destroy trees but won't sting people.

[A swarm of some insect he doesn't quite recognize suddenly hovers in front of him. They fly to the encroaching woods, landing on various trees and...that's it. It's kind of anti-climactic for his big forest-destroying move.]

[troubadamsel]

[She hesitates, winces, readies herself for pain and embarrassment...

... Oh.]

... Oh! Oh, it might actually be working!

[asano_san]

[He finds one of the insects that landed to get a better look.]

I think that little guy is already chewing on the bark!

[The bug flies away when Keigo leans in too close, but as added proof that his plan worked, it only moves on to a different branch. It doesn't seem to care enough about the humans to come within stinging range, if it even could sting.]

[Maribelle begins to express actual... joy!]

This is marvelous! No one has to risk getting hurt or wearing themselves out!

I've never seen you so happy.

[No threatening him with an umbrella. No making him clean straw out of her kitchen.]
