he magical vines creep ever onward, slowly infringing upon the Town. No matter how many are chopped down, no matter how many are set on fire, they keep coming even so.
And slowly, one by one, the people in the Town start to fall to the curse that they bring along with them.
Stay and tend to the cursed? Venture out into the woods to find the castle at the source of these vines?
Whatever you choose to do, you'd better decide quickly; the curse only seems to get worse and worse the longer everyone is afflicted.

Banishing the thought with a giggle, she places one finished paper flower between them. ]
But it's easier said than done, no? [ Like, ] Imagine... being in love-- admiring someone so much that they shine every time you see them, that they are beautiful no matter what it is they do. Your heart flutters, it's almost painful to be away from them, and sometimes it's painful to even be in their presence... But what if that person loves someone else, or you don't know if they feel the same way in return? [ General "you"s of course, of course.
She begins folding another flower. ]
There's a risk, to living without regrets. [ Ack, that sounds a bit like she's dismissing what he said. So: ] I mean, you are definitely strong enough to follow your own advice. But not everyone is...
[ Wei Wuxian and Xie Lian clearly are that strong, though, to have married each other already. ]

Shen Qingqiu closes the book on bird cages that have quite a few pages ripped out of it. His eyes close as he musters up his own courage. The book is lifted so that he can lightly bop it on top of Pyra's head. ]
It's not about strength. It is about wanting something for yourself that you can't give up on. [ You're the leading lady! You obviously are. The book lightly lifts to give another small bop. ]
This teacher believes in you.
[ There, he said it! ]

Pyra blinks just as she finishes the final fold of the paper flower, raising her eyes in surprise as he retracts the book.
...Also... she feels better than she did before? As if something has been lifted off of her. It's not so stifling anymore, and the crystal upon her chest is margin brighter. (Was the curse--...? Ah, well, she won't dwell on it.) ]

.... ]

Tuck the paper flower just above his ear, pushing back some of his long hair with the gesture-- her equivalent of bopping him in return. ] Careful. [ She tells him, withdrawing her hand and settling back to resume her paper-folding. ]
Advice like that almost sounds scandalous. [ She's not going to pursue someone if they're in love with someone else! Let alone married like he was! Who does he take her for, Tristan?
But she's only joking lightly with Shen Qingqiu; from how softly she speaks, how gentle her smile remains, she clearly appreciates his encouragement and understands his point. ]

This teacher would never!
[ There is a lightness in his words as he laughs just a little. But he does support her completely and hope that she isn't going to be dismissing this right now.
Well!! I said a lot of shit right now and so I'm not going to keep pursuing something! Don't think that you're getting off early, though! You deserve happiness, too. I'm adding that as a secret clause to our promise! What up!! ]

Xie Lian, Wei Wuxian... The lot of you. [ TSK, TSK. But her look is fond. Fonder, perhaps, now that she isn't focusing on what past love she may or may not have had. ] I'm imagining a long, idle life on some foggy mountain where you all enjoy your retirement from death by gossiping.
[1/2]
[ He certainly would love to live to see all the Peak Lords retire. As he told her, the Peak Lords are all from the same generation. They rise to their positions together. Even if one is to die, no new lord would take their place. And when they all retire, they retire together.
He laughs a little more. He wonders if he could see them all sitting on hot springs and gossiping about their wild youths like proper old fogies. ]

With Luo Binghe eventually returning, he actually won't get to see it. He still offers a warm smile, though, because it is still the dream that he hopes for his fellow Peak Lords. A quiet retirement where they can cultivate in peace and not have to worry about the messes that their senior apprentice brother caused. ]
It will be nice.

[ She stops what she's doing to lift up a finger, wagging it at him with each syllable, as if she's the one instructing him. ] It will be nice.
Just like that.
[ Because he's saying that it will be, not would be, and that makes all the difference. Can she just pretend for a moment that he'll be able to have that future with his peers? It's given her a little more hope for him. ]
[1/2]

But he closes his eyes and lets out a small laugh. Very well, very well. I worried you lots, right? ]
It will be nice.

[ REALLY GRILLING IT INTO HIM, OKAY. But it's nice to hear him say it-- because she wants him to have that belief and hope and everything that comes with it, as well as whatever retirement entails for an immortal like him.
So when he's ready, she'll say it with him because this is all part of the promise to look after him, and she wants him to know that she will indeed be there for him: ]
It will be nice.

Hehe~ Was that so hard?
[1/2]
He gets it. He gets it. Even if she doesn't know it, he gets it. He can't escape that rule from the System, it seems.
And so, he says with her one more time. ]
It will be nice.
no subject
It was not. Especially since you seemed to enjoy it so much.

[ Joking, joking.... but even if she weren't, she wouldn't mind that, she realizes, if it means reassuring him. ] Such a long life you must have had so far, you're bound to forget something important like that now and again... that the future might be something towards which to look forward.
no subject
No need to go so far. [ Shen Qingqiu says so with a laugh dancing around each word. His head dropping, like he is trying to hide his amusement and joy, but just smiling even more. The warm feelings settle so completely on him that he doesn't even feel too depressed about her saying he should look forward to the future.
If I told you that the prophecy continued, if I said that my disciple was going to return to kill me. Ha-ha-ha, not kill, but torture and leave for dead. So much worse... pass, pass. He still somehow smiles as he looks away to let out a small sigh. Shen Qingqiu finds himself able to do so despite his thoughts, because he's looking at someone that hopes so much in him, that smiles so brightly for his future. It's hard to give any other expression and it's easy to give into hope for a better ending.
It really wouldn't be awful to have a sword that could prevent that... huh?! ]
This book-- [ He reaches out to grab one of the books off the shelf that says something about curses on the spine. ] --might be useful. [ He tosses it lightly at Pyra. ]

[ Her eyes light up with hope when she places the book down. She flips it open to a random page, her finger scrolling down the page delicately as she comes across a recipe for a potion. But as she reads, her expression turns from one of hope to disappointment: ] White pepper, black pepper.... [ Squints. ] dragon’s blood, essence of man..
[ What kind of potion is this?? ]
And you’re supposed to drink this? This sounds like it would curse you more. [ Where would they even find a dragon? And what does essence of man mean— their soul?? Pyra doesn’t know anything about magecraft, let alone... whatever this is. ] I believe I saw pepper and spices in the kitchens, but the other two ingredients...
[ She looks at him. Got any ideas? ]
no subject
Just as he is musing about this. He goes still at the ingredients listed. Gross. I have to take some gross medicine but that sounds nasty. I don't want to be the one that has to hand it out and say, "Here, drink this~" Even if I smile, if I know what is in it, I can't do anything about the guilt!!
He lightly shakes his head. ]
Essence of man shouldn't be difficult but the dragon portion... we should look for another potion. [ Don't worry, my fellow sickies, I won't let you have to drink something like that if I can prevent it!! ] Even if we find dragon blood here... It is going to be way past the expiration date.
[ WHICH IS WHAT? Who the fuck is just drinking dragon blood enough for there to be a market and a date which they shouldn't drink it?! Ah, well, it sounded good anyway! ]
no subject
Let’s see here. This one lists...
[ Pyra looks equally shocked. ]
Grape extract, a cup of vinegar, maple syrup and butter reduction, two drops of a virgin’s tears, all shaken within a griffin’s uterus.
[ This one sounds even worse. She stares at the page for a few moments more... and then she simply giggles. This is all so bizarre to her, really. ]
Magic truly is strange... [ Says the woman who’s basically very, very magical herself. ] Is this something you’d concoct in your world?
no subject
No... but if my shidi, Mu Qingfang, happens to come to this place... for the sake of others, we may have to take on the sin of destroying this knowledge.
[ No one knows how far he will go! The guy is a nut when it comes to medical knowledge!! As much as he respects him for his expansive wealth of information regarding all things medical, Shen Qingqiu still has to think of the people!! ]
Let's see... remove clothes on a brisk winter day, cover self in tree sap, fresh honeydew from only flowers on the northside of a flower patch and sprint through the castle while pouring boiling hot lizard urine that gathered only on a full moon of...
[ He lifts his head up, expression blank, before ripping the pages out of the book. Forget waiting for Mu Qingfang! ] Somebody is playing around. Don't take any of this snake oil.
no subject
[ She watches him tear the pages out of the book with some mild amount of amusement. A scholar advocating for the destruction of harmful knowledge, huh. But not the destruction of a destructive sword...?
Anyways... She feigns surprise. ] You mean to say, you don’t want to run through the castle like that? [ She flaps her hand, but is unable to hold back another short laugh. ]
Then here, [ She’ll extend her hand in order to take the pages that he’s tearing out of the book. ] How about some alchemy? [ She jokes. ] We’ll make paper flowers out of snake oil.
[ It’s disappointing though that the book didn’t provide anything legitimate. ]
