t's very, very cold. It's cold enough that you'll see your breath fog in the air before you, that goosebumps appear on your arms and legs and a chill goes up your spine. You're inside, in a huge palace with sweeping arches and rooms, but it's no real shelter from the cold -- it's just as cold inside as out.
There's a throne room, a kitchen, various rooms and even a dungeon to be explored -- and outside, a frigid, frozen garden, a lake that's naturally frozen over, and miles, and miles of snow as far as the eye can see.
But be careful while you explore. The snowflake soldiers are naturally dangerous, but even more dangerous than that...there's that creeping sensation of numbness going up your arm, a pang through your chest, and the slow, slow freezing from the inside out.
Try not to leave any of your friends behind, okay? Even if they might look a bit too uncannily like some of the statues hanging around for decoration when they're frozen over.

Cold, like heat, isn't a feeling Phos is familiar with, and they're largely trying to ignore it despite how overwhelmingly terrible it is by focusing on literally anything else. Right now, that means squinting at the map from just a ways behind Lupin himself. ]
How do you put up with this every season—? The weather I mean, not the scribbles.
no subject
What are you saying? I know you guys have winter, too. You've even got icebergs to go with it.
[ he saw it himself!! Lupin quirks an eyebrow at Phos. ]
... Don't tell me you're feeling cold all of a sudden, too?
no subject
[ leave it to Phos to be more impressed by Gorm's apparent lackluster explanation of gem winter than Lupin's knife twirling skillz. They quirk an eyebrow just the same, before shaking their head with an overdramatic groan, drawing their arms tighter around themselves as another wave of shivering hits. ]
I don't feel cold! I'm freezing! It's like I'm going stiff and shaky all at the same time, but from the inside out. How do animals live with this every year..?!
no subject
No, no, I saw them. We don't have those where I live, so I thought it was pretty impressive, actually... [ a pause; he tilts his head at their dramatic display, although there's a tinge of concern to his expression. He takes a step forward. ] Nevermind all that, though. Us humans live with it by building fires - I can start one for you to sit by. How about that?

[ or. it was, when Phos left. They still don't fully grasp the multidimensional time-travel business that's brought them all here, but there's no way it could have been winter between the time separating Cairngorm and Phos' arrival here.
And if it were anyone else, they might feel somewhat touchy about someone seeing their island - their home - but Cairngorm seems to trust this human, and Phos wants to do right by that. Even if he carves maps into walls like some kind of weirdo.
Eagerly, they give a grateful nod. ]
You'll do that for me? Thank you..! [ making fire is so much cooler than the knife twirling, evident in how they're already perking up. ] And I want to see how you make it too, if you can show me that, Monsieur Lupin.
no subject
[ besides, fire is the more important thing here! It's pretty cute the way they keep calling him monsieur even though they obviously have no idea what it means. Are all the gems adorable? Lupin is thinking it's possible, at this point. Setting aside the other topic, he beckons them to follow him, heading towards one of the wings connected to the foyer. ]
You don't know how? I'm surprised.
no subject
because, yes, fire is important, much like the "monsieur" nickname Lupin made up for them that totally isn't just a word in another language. The promise of warmth has Phos trailing after him, bundling themselves in a shivering layer of alloy as if it weren't a glob of frozen metal. ]
I can't even think of what I would need it for. [ They admit openly with a small laugh, because it's true. There's not a whole lot it offers someone like a gem. ] But you make it sound like every human knows how to make one. Is it that common?
no subject
Well, it makes light, [ Lupin offers in explanation, eyes flicking back up to theirs. ] I wouldn't say we all know how to make one from scratch, but mostly everyone has the tools to help start one. We'll die if we get too cold, so it's kind of important to have them.
[ a beat. ]
I can make one from scratch, though. [ just saying!! ] But I've got a lighter on me, so we won't need to go through the trouble.
no subject
That's part of why I want to learn. One of our housemates is human, and I always worry she's going to freeze, or starve, or something to death.
[ a sigh, followed by a shake of the head. looking after living creatures is hard :( ]
But that's why I want you to show me how from scratch! I know you're making this fire for me, but I don't have one of those lighter things to use like you do. I promise you'll only have to show me once.

apparently, the constantly-worrying-about-humans thing isn't unique to Cairngorm. Lupin looks amused about it, if slightly chagrined. He's so used to being seen as hyper-competent, but it's true that next to an immortal made of gold and crystal that can leap tall buildings in a single bound, he probably seems pretty flimsy... as much as he might not like it. ]
We're not that fragile, really. Once we're adults, we can take care of ourselves, mostly. [ leaving that aside-- ] But sure, I'll teach you. It's not that hard. Do you have an obsidian weapon, like Cairngorm does?
