t's a regular morning here in the Town. The sun isn't shining at all, snow is falling like crazy, and...there may be the sounds of shouts coming from the well, thoroughly muffled. Okay, so it's not a regular morning at all, but you'd better go help those people! The newcomers are here again. Of course, once you get to the well, you'll notice that there's actually no real help you can offer -- it's totally frozen over. As for the newcomers, well... hopefully being suddenly dumped into freezing cold water in the middle of November in a dark, damp well is your idea of a good time, because that's your life now! And that's not even taking into account the mirrors in everyone's homes that are about to wake up and start chattering... Welcome to Awash's thirteenth event log, everyone! [ Hunted. It's a strong word, but not too far off from reality. Lux exhales deeply before breaking her gaze, looking up and away from Connor. ]

If by opposing the law you mean simply existing... yes. That's one way you could look at it.

[ Although being asked to explain it in such a pedantic way makes it easier, somehow. ]

I am what is called a mage—someone who is able to use magic. I understand that something like this doesn't exist in some worlds; but where I am from, being able to use magic is... [ Lux pauses, choosing her words carefully. ] Being able to use magic means that you are considered a threat to the people. Those who are believed to be mages might be stripped of their status in society, or exiled. Or... in some cases, sentenced to death. It doesn't matter whether or not you use it for good or for ill, the law is absolute.

I see.

[So this is oppression based on a coincidence of birth. Connor's familiar with that from his knowledge of human history. The America he hails from has made significant strides in recognizing rights for all humans regardless of their individual traits, but other places even in his world are not so far along. It's not surprising to him that other worlds would be that way, too.

Although he's not sure why magic would be the target.]

Is it because some mages are dangerous, if they do use their powers for ill?

[ Lux nods simply, as her frown deepens. ]

Most do, as I've been told. I'm not sure that I believe it myself, but I've seen the effects of dark magic on others. It's... It's not a pretty sight.

[So they are dangerous, then. Or at least, they have the potential to be.]

It sounds a little like when an android goes deviant. It's becoming more and more common for them to murder their owners.

[Which is part of why they must be caught and dismantled.]

But androids are only machines. You're alive. Where I'm from, what you're talking about wouldn't be allowed. [In theory, anyway.]
