Into The Forest
WHO: All volunteers
WHERE: The forest
WHEN: April 6th, late morning
WHAT: Attempting to map out the area and finding much more than they bargained for.
WARNINGS: Violence
"There is absolutely no wildlife.
There are no mutant animals to be found.
The birds are silent. There are no bugs.
It's as if everything is watching, and holding its breath, and waiting."

[He only shrugs at Mitsuru's suggestion, instead of doing anything sensible like slowing down or being quieter. A fight would be pretty fun, actually.]
Don't worry, if we get lost we can just eat berries! Or fight to the death and whoever wins can cannibalize the others.
no subject
[ casually, like that was a fucking normal thing for henry to bring up at all... ]
no subject
There will no causalities. We need to focus. This path doesn't seem to be man-made.
gonna timewarp ahead a bit if that's ok
For now, at least.
It's an odd forest, to be sure. No animals to speak of, mutated or not, and very little light that only seems to decrease the longer they go. And without the sun, it's hard to tell how long that is. It might as well be night for how much visibility they have.
Eventually, though, there's a flicker of light in the distance.]
Oh hey, check it out, guys! Is that fire?
i never mind doing the timewarp
dave's eyebrows lift in a minute sign of surprise when henry points out the flicker of light. ]
It looks like it - some kinda campfire? And a campfire means people. Or, like. Eldritch beings from beyond. So I guess we have a new destination, anyway...
[ and when they get closer, at least, they'll be able to see it's a cave. dave glances back at mitsuru, shrugging and indicating it's up to her and henry if they go inside. ]
let's do the timewarp again
Well, she steps forward towards the entrance of the cave and draws her sword, not going completely in, but enough to get a decent look around. ]
...It appears to be empty.
[ Mitsuru motions for the others to follow. ]
This fire can't have been going long.
[ She pokes at the wood and twigs that support it with the tip of her rapier. ]
See the embers? There aren't many. This is fresh. Which means...

[In his experience, which admittedly is limited, whatever lives in the forest will likely come to them rather than the other way around. He remembers the clearing with the shadow creatures, and the feeling of being led to it, rather than discovering it.
Pretty cool trick, actually. So this is probably similar.
Henry goes ahead and sits next to the fire, cross-legged, as if they were all out camping and had made it themselves. After all, that's what it's for, right?]

[ dave cuts himself off, frowning. he hadn't taken a seat like henry did, but had instead come to a stop nearby, standing with his arms crossed over his chest and his stance steady. it's an unthinkingly defensive thing to do, watching henry's back as he plops himself down.
but. knight class, so.
he's staring at the walls of the cave, eyes tracking their shadows. ]
...So, hey. [ mildly, still watching. ] Tell me you see that.
no subject
...
[ Mitsuru pauses in her internal admonishing at Dave's words. Then, following his gaze, her eyes land on three shadows that seemingly match their own forms.
At least for a moment.
The shadow that should be cast by Henry is, in fact, standing...rather than sitting.
Immediately, Mitsuru draws up her sword and points it out towards the wall--which also means that she happens to thrust it right by Henry's shoulder. Sorry about that. ]
We're not alone. Reveal yourself!
no subject
Wow! You sure know how to make an entrance, huh? Is there someone behind me or something?
[And with that he turns to see... his own shadow, but not reflecting what it actually should be from the firelight.
And the same going for Dave and Mitsuru themselves, and then some. How weird!
Upon seeing this, he... waves.]
Oh! Hey there.
no subject
the wall, basically. mitsuru has that covered. ]
Can they even talk...? [ but he does mutter that under his breath.
and no, they don't. but suddenly dave kind of knows that the shadows want to play a game. ]
no subject
Are they trying to beckon us...?
[ What should be her own shadow nods, motioning for them to draw closer. Mitsuru's gaze darts between the two other members of her team. ]
I take it these are not the shadow creatures you encountered before...
no subject
[And that's the last he addresses to Mitsuru directly, because their new friends are "talking" now.
And they have a very specific proposal.]
Sure. I like games. [And this went pretty well for him the last time.] What do you guys think?
no subject
[ dave ignores the voice that says your friends might not approve before he even thinks about what he may or may not be betting. ]
I'll play. [ though he checks in with mitsuru first that she doesn't care one way or the other, lifting his eyebrows. ] I don't mind going first, either.
no subject
You would risk a test that we don't know the parameters of?
[ She lowers her rapier, though still unconvinced. ]
no subject
[It was during another game, and if he'd failed it he'd likely have been torn to pieces. Eh, details.]
If it all goes south I bet I could kill 'em.
[...As casually as you please.]
no subject
he steps closer to his own damn shadow -
and it looks like the game is a flip of a coin. dave thinks of terezi, and the time she'd flipped a coin that had decided if he lived or died. he remembers winning, and knows that in a split off he lost.
he doesn't say the words, just nods, and watches the coin (where did it come from?) fly upwards in the air - ]
Heads.
[ - to be caught on the back of his shadow's hand. the shadow's hand covers the coin for a heartbeat before pulling away.
heads.
dave thinks to himself that now he's made two timelines, and wonders if the other dave is dead - as his shadow comes closer and leans in, breathing a word into his ear - before snapping back to the wall before dave can do more than tense.
it now looks like an ordinary shadow. ]
no subject
...
She watches, displeased but curious. A simple game of chance? At least that's what it appears. He's lucky as well. But what happened, exactly? Did it speak?
But it did turn the shadow back into what it should be, it seemed. ]
...Very well.
[ Mitsuru exhales. ]
I will play next.
[ She steps forward, confronting her own shadow. A similar play--it seems to step out of the wall itself, poised and purposeful. The shadow flips the coin-- ]
Tails.
[ Just to set herself apart from Dave, though she realizes the chances are the same either way. And, sure enough--
Tails.
It's dark form stretches out, enveloping her for a moment, and then it's back on the wall, mirroring her own posture.
Did she hear correctly...? Mitsuru gingerly touches her ear. ]
no subject
He looks excited, of all things.]
Sooooo? Whad'ja get? Ya feel any different?
[Then he cocks his head slightly.]
Hey, I will in a sec. No need to rush! [Apparently, his shadow just told him to get on with it.]
no subject
but it clearly is, because he feels like it is. ]
So, more riddles.
no subject
[ Puts her rapier back at her side and crosses her arms. ]
"Forgetfulness". I hope this is not an omen.
no subject
[Henry scratches the back of his head.]
Well, I dunno what to do with that, but I guess it's my turn either way.
Heads! [The most interesting part of a body.
Apparently, that's enough for his shadow partner. The coin sails through the air, landing on the ground with a heavy, unnatural clunk.
Henry has barely enough time to register that it reads tails--not even enough time to comment on it--before he stops caring about this at all.
It's like his energy bleeds from him along with his color, and he's left a shell, simply looking at the coin as he fades into the background. As if he was only a statue, gray as the rock around them and just as emotive.
It's a strong contrast from the energy he normally exudes. If nothing else, he was always cheerful.]
no subject
Henry? [ for all dave is frequently monotonous there's real concern in his voice. ]
no subject
instinct takes over and she pulls out the pistol at her side. ]
Artemisia!
[ Then, holding it to her temple, she pulls the trigger--an Evoker, not a real gun, but to those who don't know, it might appear to be concerning. Instead, her Persona appears behind her in a blaze of blue. ]
Diarahan!
[ A similar swirl of blue will envelope Henry's form...and... ]
...Nothing?
no subject
If anything, he sags further, despite Dave's hand on his elbow. It's like he's just shut off. And his color is entirely gone, now.
But at least he stays upright, and his eyelids flicker with awareness. He's conscious, whatever that means.]
