Event Ten.

Little Willie, mean as hell,
Pushed his sister in a well.
Mother said, while drawing water,
"My, it's hard to raise a daughter."

t's pretty dark and miserable down in the well. The cavernous area feels much larger than a well should be, bodies milling about in the darkness and knee deep, frigid water. So you're here -- and you're not alone, and the only way out appears to be the thin circle of sunlight from above, the opening of the well.

(And elsewhere, in the Town, everyone's waking up to gifts of various usefulness, but hopefully they remember to check the well today even so!)

What now?

Welcome to Awash's tenth event log, and the intro log for this month, everyone! All new characters have found themselves waking in the well in the middle of the Town. Hopefully they can get a hand out! For more information, please go here!

Meanwhile, the current characters have some new gifts.

If there are any questions, please ask them here, and have fun! Thank you!

[ his relief that they're letting him off the hook is punctuated by bewilderment at their explanation. They're a gem with another gem's head? Is that possible? Technically, it must be, but -- does that mean if someone knocked Cairngorm's head off and put it on this gem's body, it wouldn't be Cairngorm anymore? He can't even be pleased about guessing right when the answer is bizarre - and somewhat unsettling.

But it's not like he can ask about it, either. It's obviously a sore subject. Practiced as he is at keeping things off his face when he doesn't want them there, his expression remains carefully neutral as they explain; only the slight hesitation before he responds belies any kind of confusion. ]

Fosfofolite...? [ wow that's a mouthful. he hasn't heard of this gem before, either. ] My name is Lupin - Arsène Lupin. Cairngorm is a good friend of mine, so I know a little bit about your kind. Do you mind if I call you "Phos?"

Lupin, then. It's nice to meet you—-

[ If Phos knew what a record was, this would be a record scratch. They had half a mind to joke about Arsène Lupin not being that easy of a name, either, but instead their eyes go wide all over again, mouth opening and closing until they can finally get one word out. ]

Cairngorm—?!

[ Forget the seven other emotions they've just cycled through in the past minute, because they're phasing into the next, drawing the (forgotten) laptop close to their chest while their alloy bristles with just as much surprise. The last person they spoke to at home was Cairngorm. There's totally no way this adds up, not when Lupin is talking like he's known them for awhile. ]

You know my Cairngorm? [ As opposed to a different one- because it's possible, but somehow Phos knows that even in the rare event of the same kind of gem surfacing, the odds of it being another smoky quartz are just too slim. ] Small, tired and grumpy? That Cairngorm?

[ oh god why are their arms doing that thing. Lupin thinks they're going to attack him for a second simply because it looks slightly threatening (and he'd already accidentally pissed them off a moment ago.)

But no. They're just surprised that he knows Cairngorm. ]

Your Cairngorm...? [ he sounds bewildered by that statement, which also floods his head with a thousand questions - do gems love each other? do gems date? are these two a thing? why's he kind of irritated about it? - but he dams those off for now. He shouldn't assume too much. Besides, their description of them is so on-point that he can't help smirking. ] That certainly sounds like them. You two are friends?

We're more than just friends.

[ A confident answer! Phos is happy to fill in the gaps that Cairngorm obviously must have missed while these two were getting to know each other, even though Lupin seems almost shocked to hear about it - has Cairngorm not talked about them? Is there a reason for that? ]

They're my best friend! And my partner. We do everything together. [ so that's a tiny exaggeration, maybe, but what Lupin doesn't know won't hurt him.

Tilting their head slowly, Phos fits him with a look that's just short of scrutinizing while they mentally map out the way they need this conversation to go. If they want to get home as quickly as possible, puzzling out some answers will be the first step. ]

Thank you for keeping them company this whole time. They wouldn't admit it, but Cairngorm is totally the lonely type. [ A soft shrug that seems to say it can't be helped! even though that's a blatant lie. ] They haven't been here too long, have they?

[ Lupin is left briefly contemplating what he should do with the knowledge that Cairngorm had a lover that they never mentioned this entire time. Briefly. Then he's back to wondering if he's assuming too much. What a vague answer!! Then again, he didn't actually ask directly. That would probably be too rude to ask someone he just met... Maybe he can ask Cairngorm about it later (if they don't knock his head off for it.)

All of this internal questioning doesn't show on his face beyond a brief blip of confusion. It doesn't matter! He should be focusing on Phos, anyway. He smiles at them, shrugging his shoulders. ]

Oh, I know. But I think that's part of their charm, isn't it? [ that's why he can't leave them alone... ] And they haven't by your standards. It's been about six months since we showed up here.

[ They'd been anticipating something a little closer to a few weeks, at most, given that this was a place far outside of their own world. But the news that it's been six months for Cairngorm and Lupin is a harder concept to grasp than inter-dimensional kidnapping taking place here. ]

Six months, [ Phos parrots back carefully, forcing their expression to remain muted in how much shock they'll allow Lupin to see while their mind begins to race with what this means. ] And no one has figured out any way home? You must not be looking very hard..

[ Which is just their way of saying they can't afford to stay here for six months. Even if it hasn't been six months for Phos since Cairngorm had (apparently) been gone, and even if this place may well exist outside of any other reach of time, the amount of unknown factors is unsettling. ]

[ It sure is! Lupin hates it so much... Which is also why he looks very mildly disgruntled at that comment, crossing his arms over his chest. He's turned the town upside down looking for secret passages and hidden levers, thank you very much. ]

I've turned over every stone in this place looking for clues, I'll have you know. This place doesn't run on the same rules we're used to.

[ it runs on magic and horrible bullshit, as far as he can tell, but he refuses to believe that it can't be outsmarted somehow. ]

Naturally, that just means we have to try harder. It sounds like you'll be helping with that.

Following the rules you're used to usually doesn't help, I've found.

[ Spoken as someone who has literally gone to the moon and back in search of the truth they've been pursuing back home. And while Phos may not know the whole picture here, they can't help but already feel like Lupin is right- he just hasn't been trying hard enough? ]

If working together is what's going to get us home as soon as possible, it sounds like you do need me. And a friend of Cairngorm's is a friend of mine, [ KA-WINK ] So I'm in!

[ can you hear the sparkling of new (forced) friendship, lupin ]

[personal profile] heartsteals 2018-09-29 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
[ just wait until Lupin hears they went to the moon. Impey will be so jealous!!

That minor kerfuffle from a minute or two ago aside (which was his fault anyway), Phos is surprisingly amicable compared to Cairngorm, although perhaps a bit on the snooty side. He can live with that. ]

Aren't we eager? I like it. Welcome to the team, monsieur Phos. [ there is no team, there is only a disjointed collection of weirdos attempting to survive. He has half a mind to give his usual warning not to go into the woods, but, deep in his gut, Lupin has a feeling that telling Phos that will send them directly into the woods. ] First things first, let's get you and your laptop there sorted out.

Haha.. thanks.

[ monswhat.

This guy had the audacity to struggle with their name, then says some weird word they don't know... Okay, Lupin. Phos is going to nod along as if that wasn't just some bizarre verbal stutter. He is, however, absolutely correct about the woods thing. ]

You said this is a communication device, right? Please show me how to use it.. "Monsyur" Lupin!

[ Said as they bow and hold it out in an extravagant display of "respect" for this human that is so seemingly wise in the way of The Laptop. ]

[ oh no... that was cute. He can't help flashing a big grin in response, lightly taking the laptop with both hands. ]

Hm... Your pronunciation's a little off, but you've got the spirit. I'll be happy to help - like I said, we've just got to go back to wherever you found it.

[ he is one of the least tech-savvy people in the whole town, but on the bright side, he's been here long enough to figure the laptop out, at least... ]
