t's pretty dark and miserable down in the well. The cavernous area feels much larger than a well should be, bodies milling about in the darkness and knee deep, frigid water. So you're here -- and you're not alone, and the only way out appears to be the thin circle of sunlight from above, the opening of the well. (And elsewhere, in the Town, everyone's waking up to gifts of various usefulness, but hopefully they remember to check the well today even so!) What now? That so? You've got the police and everything there, along with the superheroes?

[glaciers]

Yeah.

You have firemen and police, right?

[goldenwords]

Well, yeah, but they're for mortal problems.

[glaciers]

Yeah, because I'm mortal.

What are you?

[goldenwords]

A magician. [Which... doesn't really sound as though it'd be immortal, but Riordanverse is weird. She's met a magician older than Cleopatra.] We handle all the problems from gods and demons and pesky monsters and all that.

[glaciers]

I've never heard of any of those, but I guess it's not impossible.

[goldenwords]

That's probably a good thing. It means your country's pantheon isn't messing about with your day to day lives. Honestly, the Egyptian gods should take a page out of the Japanese gods' books, from the sound of it.

[now she's just complaining...]

[glaciers]

[Wait.]

I thought you said you were from America?

[goldenwords]

Oh, sure, in a manner of speaking. But Egyptian influence is everywhere. Have you ever seen the Washington monument? Or pictures of it, I guess, if you've not left Japan before.

[glaciers]

[He just... kind of shrugs? He's never seen this before and his training was focused on One Thing in particular.]

I haven't.

[goldenwords]

Well, that's fine. It's an obelisk. According to my brother, ancient Egyptians used that shape in most of their architecture because it evoked the rays of the sun, blah, blah, blah. It's a special shape that makes it easier to work magic.

[She shrugs.]

The point is, Egyptian influence is everywhere, and Egyptian magic was usually used by the pharaohs, who were known for having lots of illegitimate kids. Which means by now there are plenty of people descended from them who can use Egyptian magic, and they live all over the world.

[glaciers]

Oh.

[No, he's not sure he gets it at all, but magic's not His Thing.]

Does that mean you have a bunch of siblings you don't know about?

[goldenwords]

Not siblings, exactly. But very, very distant cousins... probably. Yuck, that's kind of gross when you think about it.

[glaciers]

... They aren't like your half siblings? Or are they less... related to the god?

[goldenwords]

Not the gods, technically. Well, kind of the gods? The pharaohs were gods on earth and all, they hosted them. But we're descended from the actual people. Me, I'm related to Ramesses the Great on my mum's side and Narmer on my dad's. Kind of a double-whammy, you might say. Most magicians are only related to one pharaoh.

[She shrugs, looking proud of herself.]

But, y'know, they lived thousands of years ago. So their kids had kids, and their illegitimate kids had kids, and thousands of years later there are magicians all over the world with some magic in their blood because they got busy.

[glaciers]

[He's... not sure he's ever heard these names before? Maybe Ramesses, but just that one. Egyptian pharos, huh? Two powerful bloodlines. He knows about that... not necessarily because he wanted to.]

How do you train it?

[goldenwords]

Same way you train anything else - hard work and practice. Raw potential can only get you so far. [She grins.] Just between you and me, it's gotten me pretty far, though.

[glaciers]

So when you transform into birds, it's not an illusion? You're actually a bird?
