Little Willie, mean as hell, Pushed his sister in a well. Mother said, while drawing water, "My, it's hard to raise a daughter."

t's pretty dark and miserable down in the well. The cavernous area feels much larger than a well should be, bodies milling about in the darkness and knee deep, frigid water. So you're here -- and you're not alone, and the only way out appears to be the thin circle of sunlight from above, the opening of the well. (And elsewhere, in the Town, everyone's waking up to gifts of various usefulness, but hopefully they remember to check the well today even so!) What now? Welcome to Awash's tenth event log, and the intro log for this month, everyone! All new characters have found themselves waking in the well in the middle of the Town. [ ah. another one? like cairngorm?

dextera doesn’t make any immediate assumptions, since cairngorm themself said that it would be impossible for ghost quartz to show up here—though dextera had thought the same of his brother. instead, he’ll settle on the guess that this one is simply a friend or at least a comrade of cairngorm’s, nothing more and nothing less. ]

The “little one”?

[ dextera has no voice. he signs out his response, relying on the magic of the town as always to translate it for him. he spells out l-i-t-t-l-e o-n-e as an echo of the gem’s words, however, just to make sure he’s understood. ]

(chanting) bluo twins bluo twins

[ Was this person...speaking through their hand gestures? And why did Ghost find themselves understanding what they meant? ...Was this how Phos felt with the slug? They'd love to play twenty questions with the universe, but they'd been asked something. It'd be rude not to reply, even if it's not an answer to Ghost's own question. ]

Uhm, yes, [ Bit of a verbal stumble. ] The little one. [ Another stumble, as they realize further clarification is needed. ] The other Gem who lives here. [ No, wait, Phosphophyllite also lives here now. More specific... ] The bla... [ That doesn't work, either. The black crystal is white by virtue of the powder. All of this hmming and hawing is uncharacteristic of Ghost Quartz, but this seems to be a subject they struggle with. There's a bit of silence as the hollow crystal wracks their brain to explain, to find a new way to describe their old "roomie". ]

...The rude one. [ Ah yes.
There was always that description. ]

[ dextera had assumed at “the other gem,” since he hasn’t yet run into phos, but the rude one really seals the deal. he’s learned by now the kind of manner cairngorm has, and he’s trying to get used to it, but rude is probably an apt descriptor on any normal day. ]

Ah? [ a beat. ] Are you—“Ghost”?

[ that can’t be. cairngorm has already spoken to them, haven’t they? are they all right? ]

[ they blink, and for a moment find themselves trying to move their hands the way dextera did when he said their name. it's a little fascinating, admittedly. but then they realize oh. he asked something. and it was a really surprising something, too. ] Yes... [ they step closer to dextera, to get a better look at him, but also to commit his face to memory. they at first want to ask: how did you know? but they mull it over. there's really only one answer to that, considering the circumstances. ] Did they tell you about us? [ re: how they used to be? ]

[ dextera’s eyes inevitably drop to ghost’s hands when they start to mimic his signing, and really, if there weren’t something much more pressing on the table right now, he’d gladly stop to show them the correct movements.

for now, this conversation takes precedence. he nods. ]

A little.

[ enough to know it’s not something cairngorm freely shares with others. ]

[ they don't say anything for a long while. they aren't really sure how to process this. they suppose it's not terribly surprising the little one spoke of them to others- after all, they were so integral to each other's lives for so long. still, they never took them for the sentimental type. that had always been their wheelhouse- it was much harder to pry that kind of emotion from their sibling. still, they suppose this just means there is less explaining to do on their end. ]

Is there anything you wanted to know?

[ of the details of their lives together? no. dextera doesn’t know enough about cairngorm, or about gems in general, really, to inquire too deeply into all of that without first consulting cairngorm about it.

[ this seems like it'll be a long conversation, then.

they walk to the nearest wall, motioning dextera to follow. they lean back and fall into contemplative silence for a while, before letting out an almost bitter sigh. ]

Mostly. I was sick of it. [ of being together, yes. never getting a moment's peace, always having to consider the other party inside of them- it was a full time job. it wasn't any way to live. ]

[ it’s almost necessary that this becomes a long conversation, but dextera won’t overstay his welcome. he’ll listen exactly as long as ghost is willing to speak—while cairngorm technically has more in common with dextera’s brother, being the one who was trapped, dextera can’t exactly empathize with ghost’s position either. ]

[ he nods. ]
