Little Willie, mean as hell,
Pushed his sister in a well.
Mother said, while drawing water,
"My, it's hard to raise a daughter."

t's pretty dark and miserable down in the well. The cavernous area feels much larger than a well should be, bodies milling about in the darkness and knee deep, frigid water. So you're here -- and you're not alone, and the only way out appears to be the thin circle of sunlight from above, the opening of the well.

(And elsewhere, in the Town, everyone's waking up to gifts of various usefulness, but hopefully they remember to check the well today even so!)

Well. Mostly we've been doin' the quests that get posted to our shitty internet forum once a month. And we get rewards from that? The going theory is maybe if we do enough we'll bring back all the color and get to go home, or...something.

I noticed that and it kind of makes me want to ask why you're blushing after all.

[apparently that is what would happen, because she's a punk.]

...Okay, define quest. They made a really bad choice of interdimensional kidnapping victim if it's the kind of quest I'm thinking of.

[ LORD LET HIM LIVE he blushes a little worse because he's a pale idiot so ]

This month is "collect honey from bees", "fight fairies", "ruin someone's day", and "form new bonds". Guren forbid us all from doin' the day ruinin' one, but I doubt many people were super into it...well, Okuni seemed to want to pull pranks on people, but like, I don't count that as "serious".

Haha, it got worse.

[She pauses, now that she's done being a menace.]

Those all sound like they suck. Who's Guren, though? Is he in charge or something?

[ look................. look ]

He's head of the Defense Force and basically town Dad.

[ so...he's a responsible person in a town full of lackadasical morons... ]

I guess he's kind of in charge as much as anyone is?

Did anyone like... decide on that, or did it just kind of happen?

[not that she's too concerned about it either way. it's probably good they have someone who knows what he's doing.]

Oh, we voted him into the head of the Defense Force at a town meeting. We vote on pretty much all the big stuff...? Like, we voted on the town name - Chroma - and that kinda thing. I'm nominally in charge of the garden, but that's less because I was voted there and more because I can manipulate the plants into growin' faster.

Well, that's not as bad of a system as it could be, I guess.

[For a few moments, it seems like she's ready to just accept this, before she takes note of one thing he's said.]

Wait, you can do what? How?

I'm the time travel guy. So I just mess with their personal timelines.

[ "just" ]

...If that were true, couldn't you just take us all forward to whenever we've done enough of these stupid quests to go home?

[spoken like someone who has no idea what time travel consists of, probably.]

I wish. Unfortunately while I can do the plants, the town seems against me messin' with its timeline. I just get to see everyone dyin' on repeat if I try.

[ he has tried multiple times. ]

...Okay, what the fuck?

[A few seconds pass, before:]

Wait, does that mean we're all going to die at some point?

Not necessarily. I think it's mostly a warning for people like me.

[ TIME FUCKERS ]

...Okay, I’m officially done with that line of questioning and all the horrifying things I could learn if we keep going down this road.

[She will, however, take a bite of pie. That sounds like a good plan.]

How do they pick who comes here, anyways? Actually, who’s they, for that matter?

We figure the mysterious Mr. White is in charge but who the fuck knows, really. As to how we're all picked, I figure it's like a beauty contest.

[ everyone is Hot ]

...Of course his name is Mr. White. Jesus christ.

[A beat.]

Wait, why?

We technically don't know his name, but everyone's usernames on the forums are hexcodes and the person who posts the quest? #FFFFFF. White. So. I just call whoever it is Mr. F or Mr. White since it's easiest. Also, pretty much everyone here is some level of attractive.

[ JAMJARS... ]

Maybe someday we'll learn his real name, which wouldn't really help us at all but might be moderately satisfying.

[She glances down at herself at his next comment, though, giving him a slightly flat look.]

Okay, even if that were true, what kind of decision making process would that be?

Like, the kind America's Next Top Model would use if they decided to go multidimensional?

[Almost immediately, she shakes her head.]

If this were America's Next Top Model level, I would definitely not be here. That doesn't make sense.

[It's more matter of fact than self deprecating.]

[ A SHRUG. ] If you don't think so, then I have zero guesses. There's no real rhyme or reason between all of us that like...ties everyone together, you know?

...Okay. Guess I'll chalk it up to something we haven't figured out yet.

[She's still not sold on the idea that there simply isn't a good explanation, but she moves on quickly.]

So, what else should I know?

Did I mention any food without color tastes like ash?

[ if not that one is probably fine to repeat just to be SURE ]

...On a scale of one to ten, how miserable am I going to be with the food that currently has color?

We have apples? So the important food group is covered here.
