ou wake in knee-deep water, cold as ice and stagnant, in a space that is far too echoey and spacious. It feels like a massive cave, but looking up... there's only one small, circular opening that shows grey sky and shines any sort of light.

It looks like a long trip upwards, a small cylinder with walls of brick that's just a little too high to reach, even when jumping. Getting out is probably going to be a bit of a task, especially considering the water is more than cold enough to make limbs go numb.

The dark makes it impossible to see much further, but the space seems large, all filled with water, but with no other way out, stone walls the only thing for an intrepid explorer to find.

But most importantly of all... you're not alone.

Welcome to Awash's first intro log, everyone! Please review the FAQ and rules before playing. Characters have all woken at the bottom of the well in the middle of the town (which seems a lot bigger on the inside, somehow), and it looks like they'll have to put in some work to get out.

Once out, they'll be free to explore the various locations the Town has to offer at will. Just try not to die on any of the far-too-rickety walkways.

[ The well is where everything all started! Logically, Ryoji thinks that's where the most clues can be found, although he won't object to exploring everything they can first, dragged from place to place at whim instead of doing this systematically. With an unstructed way of doing things, it might just make things last a little longer, and put off the time he needs to go home. This is something he doesn't want to do, but he's hesitant to explain, not wanting to scare Lupin off. ]

Hmm~ [ He hums, stalling, stepping down the street. ] It's kind of hard to explain... If I go home, I'm not sure what will happen to me, if I would still be allowed to exist. But if it's fine for me to live here, I would like to enjoy that freedom.

[ the conversation doesn't seem to be ending; with a small shrug, Lupin follows after Ryoji as he sets off, stepping quickly to fall in line with him.

"Still be allowed to exist" is one hell of a loaded phrase. There's a few interpretations of that he could go with, and none of them are good. For the time being, he'd best leave it alone; no need to go prying into a stranger's dirty laundry. ]

You'd like to stay here, then? You might be the first one I've heard say that.

Yes.

[ That's a good thing, the drive to go home. It means there's something to go home to, something about home that people love and miss and would choose over such a bleak place as this. Good things, and it makes Ryoji smile. ]

I think there's a lot more to this world, so I want to lean more about it. There are many things to enjoy, and given the time that we have... [ He trails off with a shrug. ] Maybe I won't be able to stay forever, in the end. But I'm here now. And so are you! So I hope going home doesn't blind you to everything else the universe has to offer.

[ and sounding more and more like he's on death row or something - not that Lupin's going to mention that. ]

I'm all for stopping to smell the roses, but there are matters I have to attend to back home. Besides, this seems like more of a kidnapping than a vacation.

[ Ryoji grins, taking that as a compliment. It's not something he hears a lot, but it's a comment he's heard before- usually it's phrased as him sounding like an old man. ]

There's no reason it can't be both a kidnapping and a vacation. There wouldn't be anything to gain by kidnapping me, but somebody like you... I could see it. Were you doing important things at home?

[ that's such a terrible thing to say. He frowns, looking at Ryoji with some level of concern. ]

You could say that. There are people depending on me. [ short and nondescript; Lupin quickly moves on to what he sees as more pressing. ] Are you okay? Saying there's nothing to gain by kidnapping you... Everyone is worth something, you know. Though you probably shouldn't measure it by how much someone wants to abduct you.

Hm?

[ The two points seem to have very little to do with one anther, and Ryoji has difficulty reconciling them. But the implication that he has worth is very warming, so he tries his best to reassure Lupin in return, smiling easily as always. ]

I'm alright. All I meant was that I don't have a family to speak of, and the last time I saw my friends, we'd just had a terrible fight. There would be none who would wish for my return, so a kidnapper has nothing to gain by taking me.

[ it's not particularly convincing. True, they're perfect strangers - Lupin doesn't even know his name - but this combined with the way this boy has been speaking makes him worried. His bleeding heart always got him into trouble more than his thrill-seeking and burgling ever did. ]

Friends fight - that's part of being human. If you really care about each other, they'll come back to you. Besides, I doubt they were wishing you'd get abducted.

[ as for family - well, he doesn't have any, either. ]

Chin up. I don't know your story, but I do know thinking so little of yourself won't get you anywhere.

[ A kind, sincere sentiment, if he were human, if he truly believed they care about him, but they aren't the kind of people who would wish for his abduction either- that, he's sure about. ]

I hope so. There's all sorts of things I'd like to say to them if I were to see them again. Maybe I just don't want to go back, because I'm scared.

Hah. Well, you've got some time to think of what to say to them when you see them. If you need someone to bounce ideas off of, consider me your man.

[ he'll take it as an improvement, and offers Ryoji a charming smile. ]

Arsène Lupin, by the way. And you are?

[ He wonders what Lupin would think, being told "I'm sorry I had to kill you all," and decides to hold it in as long as he can, or he might never see that smile again. ]

...Ryoji Mochizuki. It's been very nice talking with you.

The pleasure is mine, Ryoji.

[ another Japanese-sounding name. He has to wonder if he's (somehow) somewhere near Japan, even though he has no idea how he'd get there from England so suddenly (and even though the idea of moving across dimensions has been brought up - he just can't quite accept that one yet.) ]

Be careful out there. I like your optimism, but I've got a bad feeling about this place.
