[ With Minato so kindly volunteering himself for this particular quest, there was no way Ryo wouldn't take advantage of his offer. After their brief chat on the forum, Ryo heads over to the church and waits outside, rifle hefted over one shoulder like a club. Flavo's the best place for a quest like this; there's a decent amount of open space and it's the district with the fewest people. ]

[ dextera is not up at six, but he’s not much later than that—his sleeping has become somewhat regular, especially with the emergence of the sun. it’s easier to follow.

any sleepiness is immediately washed away when he sees ryo in his inbox, and he types his response quickly, chest fluttering. ]

I think I could. Would you like to take that quest together?

he does arrive at the designated spot within the designated time, though. his sword is easy to hold in either hand, and the way that it works means that his strikes don’t need to be skilled. they just need to connect.

[ when he sees ryo, and immediately, he sticks out his hand. ]

[ i'm kinkshaming u, dex.

Ryo arrives not long after Dextera, rifle tucked away under his coat. He's able to shoot a gun single-handedly if he has to, though it's harder without being able to use the other hand to steady the weapon. At least this time he doesn't have a dozen cuts from being flung through a window and the weather is clear with no rain to hinder his ability to aim properly. ]

Hey. [ He immediately takes hold of Dextera's hand, squeezing it firmly. ] Before we head in, how familiar are you with the Chimera in Greek mythology?

[ fucking, hell yeah,

dextera feels a little silenced by having his hand held like this, actually, but not enough for him to want to go back on it. ryo’s hand feels strange in his, much more delicate than guren’s, and the comparison itself is odd in his mind. it calms him down, or at least subdues him. ]

Somewhat. [ one hand, with his sword tucked against his back, means his answers are slower, but he’s gotten pretty good at this. ] Many animals.

Depictions of it vary, but it's typically presented as a lion with a goat head arising from its back, and its tail is either a snake or a dragon. It's able to breathe fire, and the tail is venomous.

[ Ryo Asuka, walking encyclopedia. ]

Bellerophon critically wounded the Chimera from atop Pegasus with a bow and arrow and then drove a lead-tipped spear into its fiery mouth; the fire caused the lead to melt and pour down its throat, suffocating it.

[ it sounds like a monstrosity, but dextera wouldn’t expect anything different from this town. he watches ryo, listening, as they walk, and his thumb naturally brushes against the back of ryo’s hand—it’s habit, by now, and he doesn’t even think about it. ]

Not invulnerable?

[ many mythological monsters are, with only one particular weakness, but it sounds like the chimera will go down with enough force. ]

[And, obediently, here comes target practice...! Minato seems pretty unconcerned, all things considered; his hands are tucked into his pockets as he heads on over to the church. It's an easy landmark to find, at least.

And when he spies Ryo there, he lifts a hand to wave.]

For the quest, right...? Hello.

[ Ryo has to fight the urge to let go of Dextera's hand, not liking the way the thumb is brushing against him; the hand holding aspect of this quest would be easier if Akira were here.

He squeezes a little harder as they venture deeper. ]

No. It's dangerous and can devastate the land around it with its fire, but a bullet or two should be enough to stop it. [ The ancient Greeks would've solved their problems quicker if they had access to guns. ] I'll shoot the head that breathes fire and you take care of the rest.

[ dextera stops when ryo squeezes his hand, as if remembering that it’s not guren he’s got his paws on. he’s not trying to be like this—sorry about all this overflowing affection, ryo.

he nods, listening to ryo’s guidance.

“the rest” could really be anything, but if ryo is quick and sure with his gun, then there won’t be much at all for dextera to do. all he really needs to focus on is that they don’t come apart, and if he needs to lace his fingers with ryo’s to do that, then he unfortunately will. ]

Leave it to me.

[ with that, he pulls his sword free, and it’s lucky that he’s ambidextrous. ]

[ Ryo looks to Minato when he approaches, inclining his head slightly in greeting. ]

Hello. [ He nods. ] I'm Ryo Asuka.

[ Gather a strand of unicorn hair. This quest doesn't sound too difficult, though he's familiar enough with unicorn lore to know that they're supposedly only able to be tamed by a virgin. Briefly, he considers inquiring Akechi and Dextera about their virginity status, but decides against it because a) that's inappropriate and b) it's possible that these unicorns don't care about that. Maybe they've joined the 21st century and realized that it's an antiquated social concept for regulating sexual behaviour.

He sends Akechi a text asking if he's interested in completing the quest of him, voluntelling Dextera again, before informing poor Dex that the three of them are going to tackle the unicorn quest together. Once that's done, he heads over to the edge of the forest and waits for them there. ]

[ dextera, on the other hand, doesn’t actually know much about unicorns. they’re mentioned in the bible… but they’re probably not “unicorns” as the books in the library might tell them. biblical unicorns are creatures of great strength, and based on what everyone else has been saying about this quest, brute force is probably not going to get them to succeed here. ]

[ still, uh, as he approaches, he’s not sure that he’s the most appropriate person for this quest except that he listens really well. surely akechi alone would be enough. ]

[He'll return that bow of his head, expression pretty peaceful. A business meeting to shoot apples off of heads, no big deal.]

I'm Minato. Minato Arisato. You volunteered pretty easily, so... I guess you're probably a pretty good shot?

[ Just another day in Minato's life tbh. ]

I am. I was part of the group that dealt with the bogeyman; my role was to stun it with this rifle. [ And Guren wouldn't have included him in the plan to kill the bogeyman if he weren't good at shooting things since he has no cool powers or close-range combat skills. ]

I'd give you a demonstration of my skills before shooting the apple off of your head, but I prefer not to be wasteful with bullets when ammunition is scarce. I hope you don't mind.

It's fine.

[It...shouldn't be fine? But here he is, being Minato about this whole thing...so.]

If Ichinose-san has that sort of faith in your skills, then it's fine. You should save your bullets.

[He'll dig into his pockets to produce an apple, and:]

Where do you want me to stand?

[ good boy. save that affection for someone who actually wants it, because ryo cerainly does not—the only person he wants affection from is named akira fudo, and they're currently worlds apart. ]

Whatever you do, try not to let go of my hand. [ don't disappoint him by making hm fail the quest, dex.

he lifts a hand to partially unzip the front of his coat, reaching inside to pull out his rifle. ]

[ dextera would rather die than disappoint ryo, so there’s that. he glances over when ryo pulls out his rifle, and his hand tenses on the grip of his sword—questing with mutsunokami put the fear of god about guns into him, even if he is fairly confident in ryo’s ability to do anything.

with both his hands occupied, all he can do is nod.

it’s not too much further in the forest that the thrashing of the chimera can be heard. ]

[ he glances to ryo. ]

[ ryo doesn't glance back; he's looking in the direction of the sound, fingers tigtening around the rifle. it could be something else entirely, but the quest-related creatures have a tendency to show up rather quickly once you go looking for them.

he moves toward the sound, trying to be as stealthy as possible to avoid drawing the creature's attention, and soon they're close enough to see the chimera between the trees. the lion head appears to be eating one of the spider deer, tearing out its entrails with razor-sharp teeth.

ryo decides to get a little closer before shooting it, but the heel of his shoe crunches a dry twig, alerting the chimera to their presence. the goat head rears back and breathes out a stream of fire in their direction. ]

[ fire is not especially new to dextera, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less worried about it than a normal person would be. he pulls back, automatically hauling ryo out of the way and trying to cover him in the process. one of the trees catches on fire, but the recent rains mean that it’s at least not going to burn the whole forest to the ground.

the chimera isn’t stupid, though. it notices movement like any predator would, and the fire was a warning as much as it was to smoke its prey out of hiding. it’s clever, like that, when all the heads are united toward one purpose. ]

[ Except Akechi might not be the most appropriate person for this quest, either, oops.

Honestly, when it comes to mythology and folklore, virginity isn't so much about sexual behavior as it is about purity, as outdated a concept as that might be. And while he hasn't exactly been with anyone, Akechi can hardly say he's all that pure anymore. His heart, at least, isn't.

Still, he approaches the small group at the scheduled time and place with his usual smile on his face, and a wave of his hand in greeting. ]

Oh, everyone is already here! I hope I haven't kept you waiting long, Asuka-kun, Dextera-san.

[ He was originally going to ask Akechi, but according to the requirements they need a red and a different color. Dex is necessary for them to be able to complete the quest.

Ryo greets Dextera with a slight incline of his head and looks to Akechi when he approaches, shaking his head at his words. ]

Not at all, Akechi-san. [ He replies with a polite smile curving his lips. ] Let's go find those unicorns.

[ No point in standing there to chitchat; he motions for them to follow and starts walking toward the trees. ]

Did you know that ancient Greek writers of natural history believed unicorns lived in India? The earliest known reference to the unicorn is in a book called Indica written by the classical Greek physician Ctesias in the fifth century BC.
