Event Six.

If you see this hairy creature

he full moon hangs brightly over the Town, hovering so low that it almost feels as though you could reach out and touch it. It should be comforting.

But as the howl of wolves fills the air, it's anything but.

There are werewolves on the prowl, and their target is very clear -- the Town won't be able to last without your help.

[It’s only on hearing someone walk by outside that Shiho pokes her head out the door of a Ruga house. It could be Kaoru. It could be....well, someone in need of help. Still, she clutches the gun just a bit tighter as she looks because....well.... it could be Kaoru and closing the door would do little against a determined, angry psychokinetic.

What she sees instead is Dex looking like he stepped right out of an old horror movie, complete with colorless blood with a heart in one hand.

....has he been turned too? He looks pretty normal but Shiho isn’t about to take any chances.]

.....you’re cooking that first before you eat it, right? [Shiho, why are you trying to lecture him at a time like this]

[ this is not how dextera would have chosen to let shiho see him, and he cringes—surprisingly, less guilty than someone should be if caught carrying a heart to some unknown destination. he knows this looks bad.

yet, in response to her question… he shakes his head. at least thank him for his honesty, maybe? ]

[.......is that normal?? Is eating raw hearts normal?!]

...Do you remember we talked about not eating weird stuff you find? That counts as one of those weird things. Especially if it isn’t cooked.

[ oh… yeah, he remembers that conversation, but he’s eaten plenty of raw hearts before. sometimes he eats them straight from the chest, and he’s really sorry that shiho might have to find out just how deep the nasty food rabbit hole goes. ]

It’s OK.

[ but like… is it ]

[Dex. Why can’t you just eat normal things like toast? Or hearts on toast.]

It’s not okay?! Is that even clean? How fresh is it? If it’s too old, you have to cook it!

[ if he puts it on toast, does that make it acceptable? ]

It’s fresh.

[ which is not exactly a measure of extent, but he thinks it’s fresh enough! even if it isn’t, he has a nasty little bug inside of him that makes him able to eat rotten food without hurting himself. don’t look too closely next time you touch hands, shiho. ]

[The toast does make it a bit more acceptable if only because it normalizes it somewhat in Shiho's mind. Even if he would just skewer it then it would be fine?

But now she's conflicted. On the one hand, why is he like this. On the other: this is Dex and being mean to him always felt unwarranted.]

It could still have diseases in it. [Should she touch it and make sure?! Against her better judgment, she waves him closer.]

[ shiho will get angry if he doesn’t, he suspects, so he cups the heart in both his hands and comes closer for her to see it. on the upside, it’s stopped beating by now, though dextera wasn’t lying when he said it was fresh. it’s still wet. ]

[That sure is a bleeding heart in his hands... well, she's touched worse. (Like Sakaki's arm, for one. That gross pervert.)

All she wants to know is whether or not it contains weird parasites or bloodborne diseases though out of curiosity she also checks to see where this heart comes from in the first place.]

A deer, huh... It's safe to eat. [Much as it pains her to tell him this. And now she has blood all over her hands which she considers wiping on something before she realizes that the only choices she has are him, the door or her skirt. Ugh....]

[ dextera realizes the problem she’s having a moment later, and so he sticks the heart in his mouth—it’s a bit tough, so it doesn’t immediately yield under the pressure of his teeth—and holds his arms out.

he’s offering his sleeves for her to wipe her hands off, if she likes. ]

Go ahead.

[ he doesn’t need his mouth to talk! ]

[.....And now Dex probably has blood all over his chin? She had been trying her best not to give him a disapproving look but this is the last straw. In this moment, she knows exactly how Minamoto must feel every single time they do something he thinks they shouldn't have.]

I'm not going to do that...

[She's going to wash her hands properly.]

And why didn't you bring a bag or something?

[ dextera nods, despite her disgust and disapproval, because it’s not as if he can force her to wipe her hands off on his coat. he does take the heart out of his mouth, at least, and—yes, now there’s blood on his face, like a child who doesn’t know how to eat properly. ]

Always like this.

...You're cleaning this.

[And with that she's reaching up to wipe blood from his face with her sleeve which she's going to send to him to clean.]

You need to get a bag and not just carry it around. Even RPG characters have inventories, you know?

[ luckily for shiho, dextera is quite capable of cleaning away blood without an issue. it’s just that he hasn’t yet, even if she’s now made him feel like a child who not only can’t eat properly, but also is being scolded by his mother. ]

Pockets.

[ a weak defense… and then the heart goes back in his mouth, as he motions for her to give him her sleeve again. ]

Let me.

[She learned this through proxy since Minamoto is basically the most mothering salaryman of them all.

Also she just wiped his mouth?!]

Then put it into your pocket instead of holding it like that. [Struggling for a moment, Shiho nonetheless gives him her sleeve, still giving the heart a fretful look. GOSH. At times like these they need clean handkerchiefs more than ever.]

[ it’s too late, shiho. he’s going to hold it like this and there’s nothing she can do to stop it.

with her sleeve offered out, though, he takes some of the fabric between his fingers. there’s a glow that would seem too bright to look at if it were any stronger, and then—the blood disappears, as if vaporized. the only sign of effort on his part is that he bites down harder on the heart, and it falls from his mouth because of his teeth sinking through.

whoops. ]

[Dex........ She feels like she's dealing with Hatsune. (Except Hatsune would have quietly eaten that heart in a corner already.)

Thankfully Shiho's reflexes aren't awful and she does reach her free (unbloodied) hand out to catch it. And now she's got a heart in her hand.]

...You......... [GRR]

Give me a second.

[He can follow her or not but she's taking this heart inside to wrap it up in something clean.]

[ you’re welcome for the heart, shiho!! ]

[ dextera winces apologetically, and follows her inside like a sad, lost puppy—he doesn’t know what else he can do, now that he’s got blood dripping down his face all over again and shiho has taken his lunch. ]

[Shiho wraps it in a clean bit of re-purposed peasant clothing which she never wants to get back after this. At least like this it’ll be easier for him to carry and in a pinch he could probably bludgeon a werewolf with it or something.

And ugh...he looks sad too. She can’t help but to feel sorry if just a little, though at the same time she’s kind of amazed that he manages a feat like that with blood dripping down his face.]

...Here. This time don’t drop it. [And she’s going to give his face another wipe again. Be more presentable, Dex.... please...]

[ dextera is the saddest little gremlin, and blood dripping down his face like that really only drives it home that he’s utterly helpless when it comes to taking care of himself.

he takes the heart, watching the blood soak through the fabric, but now that he’s holding onto it like this it doesn’t seem like he’s going to try biting it again—at least, not in front of her.

instead, he seems… grateful. ]

[Why does she have to be the responsible adult here....?

With a deep sigh, her expression relaxes into something that’s part-worried but also willing at this point to just forget and forgive.]

You’re welcome. What are friends for, after all? [...probably not for wrapping up a heart with one bite taken out of it, but exceptions must be made in these circumstances.]
