If you see this hairy creature

he full moon hangs brightly over the Town, hovering so low that it almost feels as though you could reach out and touch it. It should be comforting.

But as the howl of wolves fills the air, it's anything but.

There are werewolves on the prowl, and their target is very clear -- the Town won't be able to last without your help.

[She reacts a second too late (and she could almost hear Minamoto's scolding, trying to use your powers or conduct missions while you're not well rested is like a normal person trying to operate heavy machinery under the same conditions. Just because your powers are a part of yourself doesn't mean you can neglect this.) and thankfully he put up the shield because it bought her those precious seconds to get a good hold on the tree and hold it back and it stops right against the shield.

She breathes a sigh of relief. But the she turns to him.]

I'm so sorry! I didn't mean for that to happen! I promise it won't happen again!

[Nyx stares, dumbfounded, at the long where it barely rests against his shield. It should have hit him with far more momentum. What...?

Kaoru catches his attention and he wastes no more time dropping his shield to jump over the log to safer ground. Putting on a disarming grin, he waves a hand at her.]

No harm, no foul, right? It's fine.

[He points a thumb at it curiously.]

Do you stop that thing? Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.

It's not fine! You could have gotten hurt!

[This is a big enough deal normally and she hasn't been sleeping well on top of that...it's stressful.]

It wasn't all me. That...thing you did bought me time to catch it. [Which is to say, yes she did do something.] What was that you did anyway?

[Awww. He smiles and shakes his head.] Point is that I didn't, yeah? So of course it's fine.

I might have used a barrier spell, but I didn't put much magic behind it. Whatever it was you did to stop it was amazing. I owe you one.

[She's still frowning but even she knows that if she kept arguing about how he should feel about this it'd be selfish. It wasn't her place to make him blame her.

She sighs then, instead.]

Well, I don't think you owe me anything since it was my mistake to begin with. [Still though, she's now far more interested in this ability of his!] A spell? So that was magic?

Yeah. It's something that was given to me before I came here. [Whether he actually deserves it remains to be seen. He never got to do what he promised before waking up in that well.]

Is yours not magic?

There sure are a lot of people who use magic here...

No. It's a psychic power. [Though it feels like only hers and Shiho's powers are like that.] It's something I was born with and it comes from here. [She taps her head to indicate her brain.]

Huh.

[His mouth curls down in an expression of impressed surprise, as if to say 'well, how about that'.]

We've got nothing like that at home either. Don't think people are just born with magic, just the capacity to be able to use it? [A shrug.]

Either way, the variety of abilities in this town is surprising to us both.

Well, powers aren't something that can be given to others where I come from so what you're saying is really different from what I'm used to too.

It really is, isn't it? And some people have such cool powers too! Like Ei-chan! He can make his skin hard and even though he thinks it's boring and one note it's actually really cool in action! Apparently where he comes from 80% of people are born with special powers!

[News to Nyx. His eyebrows lift and he nods his head with a whistle.] 80%. That's a significant amount of people.

I haven't met... "Eychan" yet. Now I'm gonna have to introduce myself. Can't imagine how a society like that even works. Maybe see if he'll give a demonstration.

[Nyx, you don't even know his actual name. You're not allowed to see how good of a defense hardened skin would be.]

Right? It's really different to think about a world like that.

[Also she should probably stop introducing him by that nickname...] I don't have his hexcode memorized. [She doesn't actually have anyone's memorized. She kept a little list near her laptop.] But if you ask for Kirishima I'm pretty he'd probably answer! Or if you ask about quirks. I think there are three of his classmates here with him. They're all studying to become heroes.

[Quirks rings a bell. As does the comment about hero studying.]

He wouldn't happen to know Izuku, would he?

They're from the same class! Along with Ochako-chan and Todoroki-kun.

Oh! Well, shit. Izuku's a good kid. [Good being an understatement. Izuku has long since earned his respect as a fighter and a strategist That's not easy for his age.] If the others are in his class then I'll have to see if they'll be open to a spar.

He is, isn't he? And he's smart too! And his pow--quirk is no joke! I haven't sparred with him but he's definitely strong! [Because Izuku is also her good friend! And she can go on and on about her friends.] I'm sure they'd be up for it! [After all, Kirishima was always up for training and she's sure the rest of them are the same.]

I've fought with him before. Not against him, but we've gone out to the forest together. Kid's good at what he does. [He's all for praising the skills of others. He's met a lot of amazing kids since he got here. Kaoru included! He doesn't feel so isolated among them, either, so that's a win in his book.]

What about you? What do you use your ability for?

He is.

[She cocked her head with a grin that was just a bit cheeky. Okay, a lot cheeky. Still.]

Sorry, sir, I'm afraid you don't have the clearance to know that. If I told you, you'd have to sign a whole pile of waivers.

[She held out her arms to indicate the size of that pile which is nearly half her height. (It's not. It's really more like 50 sheets.)] But if you mean what I've been using it for here, I've joined up with the defence force.

[Nyx's grin shifts to a smirk and he crosses his arms casually.]

Classified, huh? I'll have you know I'm one of the King's elite. There's very little I don't have clearance for.

[He doesn't actually need the information, if she's not allowed to tell people, but he can't help but roll with the cheekiness.]

[It's always nice to find people who will play along with her!

She puts her hands on her hips.]

Sorry. It's a matter of national security that this is kept a secret. You shouldn't even know that there's a secret!
