Event Five.

So here I’ve stood for forty years In dark and dust and creaky sounds, Waiting for her to say, “Turn around.” This might not be just what she meant, But me – I’m so obedient.

t first, it seems a little too simple for a true test of morals. Don't eat, don't take, don't look? The most basic of requirements. And with guides, it isn't too difficult at all to avoid those obvious pitfalls. At least, until the Town's suddenly far, far too empty, almost eerily so -- until there's nobody there but your fellow reds, or blues or yellows, in a town that is far too big for just a portion of the people there. The furniture and other inanimate parts of the town began to talk.

[Now that he's ignoring the items in front of him, he gives Zero a look. He hasn't run into him yet.] It started small, but the more people refused to clean the more they began sharing deep parts of their worries not everyone wanted broadcast. They wouldn't let us sleep.

[ Pranks. From the sound of it, the town was pulling pranks on them. Nothing serious or seemingly dangerous. ].

How long did it last that time?

[ He asks as a chainsaw suddenly appears a few feet away instigating a fluttery commendation from his red feathered companion. Zero stares at it wondering if this place was temping him or Kaito. ]

How long does this [ he nods at the chainsaw ] usually last?

[swordfucker]

[Pranks... for the first quest, maybe. But the shadows weren't a quest, and he's not counting them.]

About a week. Same thing when our own shadows started attacking us.

[moonlitknight]

[ A frown. At this point, he’s not sure if that’s a joke or not. ]

Your shadow?

[swordfucker]

All of our shadows.

[He gestures to one of the many spots where his uniform is stitched up.] What started as pranks turned into attempts to take our lives fairly quickly. Only light and magic weapons like mine were able to do anything to stop them, but it was temporary.

[moonlitknight]

[ Light and magic weapons..... His brows crease. Hunters used bespelled weapons, but did that make them magic— He shakes the thought away. He needed to focus on the important matters on hand. ]

If it turns dangerous, I’ll deal with it then.

[ He looks at the cardinal, his expression unreadable. He can’t do anything about what happened before or what might happen after. He can only deal with what’s in front of him and right now he had no reason to do anything about the little pest fluttering around him . ]

[Spoilers: they're magic]

You'll have to.

[Guren is firm with that. Everyone will have to deal with their own stuff, though he doesn't mean it'll have to be alone. His head tilts a bit, considering Zero.]

I'm Guren Ichinose, by the way. I haven't run into you yet. What's your name?

Zero Kiryuu.

[ The cardinal chirps at his name and lands on his shoulder before hopping closer to better chirp in his ear no doubt. He pushes it off without looking and the little fluff ball jumps into the air happy as can be already used to his reaction. Zero just gives it a look, not bothering to comment on the little display in case it takes it as encouragement. ]

Well, Zero. Things are fairly easy right now, at least for us, but if things start getting too much, let me know if you need any help. I lead a defense force here, and we're going to be trying to help people through this as best as we can.

[moonlitknight]

[ Military uniform. Leader of a defense force. He looks him over more closely. ]

There’s nothing easy about this.

[ They were fighting a war back home, one they were losing. The Purebloods had attacked the place holding their last hope of turning it around, and like a movie reel of the last time he woke up in a strange place with no memory of what happened, he’s forced to swallow another’s version of events when all he can really be certain of is the echo of his absence. If he was here then that meant he wasn’t there. And that too he had to swallow because without knowing what caused it, there was nothing he could do about as things stood. ]

If you’re leading the defense who’s leading the offense?

[swordfucker]

[Guren snorts, because he thinks it's a dumb thing to say, and because he already has an answer.]

In this place, we're the same thing. Whoever brought us to this place hasn't been visible, and the only clue we have to go off of is that user #FFFFFF that posted this quest.

The "defense force" is just for keeping everyone safe. Sometimes that means fighting creatures or whatever comes at us, too.

Like the shadows.

[ He looks at him. ]

How long has this been going on? How long have you been here?

[swordfucker]

Almost three months. We were the only ones here, in the first group, so the answers are the same, as far as I know.

I see.

[ Three months and they were no closer to any meaningful answers. ]

[ He trails off as his eyes stray behind him, losing focus when a picture frame suddenly pops into existence up ahead. The frame holds an image of what seems to be himself in a school uniform smiling warmly at the camera, except he's got slightly longer hair and there's no tattoo marring this version of him. ]

Behind him, the little cardinal bursts into loud chirps and flits all around him. Yet, Zero is silent, unable to ignore the face staring back at him this time. His silence sends the little one into a panic and in a mindless attempt to grab his attention, it dives at him from behind. In the long run, it's a stupid move really against a vampire, and Zero proves that almost immediately when he easily side-steps the sneak attack. Suddenly absent a stopping force, the bird flies straight into the next object in its flight path - Guren. ]

[swordfucker]

[There's a lot to take in, there. The picture, Zero's quick reaction, the bird... But despite Guren's grouchy handling of his own bird, he moves his hands quickly to catch Zero's bird like a cushion, careful not to hurt it.]

Don't grab it. [Just in case he's tempted.]

[moonlitknight]

[ He is, but it’s not enough for him to do it just enough to make it impossible to ignore. ]

I know.

[ He pulls his gaze with great difficulty but he does it. ]

Your defense force. [ He looks at the cardinal who immediately launches itself into the air to tweet up a storm near his ear. ] Are you looking for a way back?

[swordfucker]

Yes.

[He answers it quickly and easily, tilting his head a bit. He drops his hands when the cardinal is free.]

Everyone has something important they need to get back to, even if that's just enjoying their own lives.

[moonlitknight]

[ That's all he needs to know. ]

Is that you trying to sign up, or are you saying you'll only help in specific cases? Either way, I have to know before I can ask you for anything.

I'm not signing up.

[ A quick response, he was a Hunter. He wasn't about to join another organization, but if they needed the help, he wouldn't simply stand by. ]

Then we don't need your help.

[Ice cold... But if people don't do teamwork, or are afraid to join a group, then he's not ready to reach out to them, either.] Aside from basic human decency to others.
