And leave it here for the maw of the next creature to come this way?
[ Not only would that cost him reliable protection, but it would also put Pyra's forge work to waste. He doesn't trust the forest—and the people roaming it—enough to leave his possessions behind, even when it seems wiser to shed the superfluous weight. ]

[ She'll just have to work twice as hard to lift him, because she doubts he'll be able to help assist her, should she need it, with her weight and his armor. ]
But forgive me, you are right; surely, you'll be able to scale this cliff with no issue.

[ As well as an exercise in trust, he adds inwardly, and that gives him the biggest pause of all. ]
And the forest is a strict judge of such things. Loath though I am to say it, it seems we'll need to rely on one another to proceed.
[ To that end, the armor should ideally go. He acknowledged earlier that making himself lighter would be the wiser thing to do, and so Berkut sets out to unstrap the pieces. ]

Lending her power to him might make this easier, as she does have that focus ability. And Mythra herself can analyze this cliff’s structure if necessary. Having done this once before, she knows that it still won’t be easy; climbing is a strenuous and difficult exercise, it tests balance, endurance, upper body strength, and patience. There will be sweat.
But that’s not the point of this exercise, is it? It’s about trust. ]
...I think it might be best if I go first. See that first ledge? I’ll be able to pull you up to it...
[ She approaches the wall, finding the first ledge upon which to grasp. ]

[ He volunteers off-handedly as he follows suit, just shy of reaching for the ledge himself. Rigel boasts few flatlands, and this makes the cliff side a rather familiar sight for him. At the very least, Berkut isn't ignorant to a terrain like this one.
But Pyra shall ascend first, because that's the whole point of all this. So he waits. ]
no subject
If not, she'll continue onto the next portion of the cliff. ]

[ The start is always the easiest when it comes to this sort of activity. Still at his peak strength, Berkut nevertheless takes Pyra's hand to pull himself over the ledge. Best not to displease the forest this early on into the trial. He carries on conversationally. ]
We also boast Valentia's largest waterfall.
[ The implications are there. Should she wind up visiting his world, after all, he'll let her go and see it—maybe even take her himself, if they should pass it on the way to some village or another. ]

You’ve called your land... harsh, before. [ And harsh paints an equally grey and barren picture. ] But I’m starting to think that’s not all it is. [ It’s time to scale another ledge. It’s a shorter step this time, with better hand holds. Effortlessly, she pulls herself upward. ]
Mountains are often majestic, and the waterfalls of glaciers... they must pristine. [ Pyra carefully looks down over her shoulder at him. ] Doesn’t anyone call your land beautiful?
no subject
[ This ledge is child's play, so he ascends without assistance. He hums in thought. ]
Rigel may be replete with mountains, but the tallest of them all belongs to a witch who sells the souls of maidens to maintain her youth. Our largest forest is known as the Black Forest due to the dense canopy that casts out nearly all light. Then there lies a volcanic region to the west that the locals avoid out of fear, and to the east is a poisonous mire where the Faithful seclude themselves. Tell me, is any of this beautiful?
[ In a rather blasé tone, he rattles these facts out before pausing. ]
Don't misunderstand. I've already told you about Rigel Falls. The Empire is many things, but beautiful is not the word I'd use. If anything, I would call it grand.
no subject
What is a good compromise? ] Wondrous, then.. to behold. The darkest of forest, the cruelest of mountains, the most unforgiving of igneous terrain...
[ Indeed, she does speak of it with wonder. ] ...Have you traversed all of these regions?
no subject
[ He never liked the Faithful, nor did he ever have a reason to visit Duma's abode. There's the tunnel that goes straight from the castle to the tower, too. Berkut doesn't consider this a loss. ]
A ruler must be familiar with the land he is to rule.
no subject
To travel all of those lands, while so young... Most of his life must have been upon horseback, if not part of some battalion. ] And its people, mm. [ She says, reaching for the next ledge. ]
Which area do you call your home... Or did you only grow up in Rigel Castle?
no subject
[ He waits for her to progress before continuing. They can chat while they move, and scaling a terrain like this one takes concentration. ]
Though it's been some time since I last settled there.
no subject
She slides along the wall carefully, palms pressed to the jagged surface of the cliff. Pebbles fall to the ground beneath her. ]
When you... left your world to be brought here, were you already far away from the castle?
no subject
No. I'd just gotten back and was with Rinea when I heard a voice . . . and then I awakened in the well.
no subject
[ Having a little more room, she looks up the wall and-- hm. The ledge above is enough for her to reach with a superhuman jump, but for him....? ]
Here, I'll give you a boost.
no subject
Very well.
[ How he longs to see Rinea. He would've liked to earn that right through his strength alone, but this very ledge is proof that the town has other thoughts in mind. ]
no subject
Her eyes sweep over him before looking upward. ] ...Another gap. I'll go up first this time and help you up.
[ Already climbing, heyooo. Lookit dat booty ]
no subject
They progress like this: Berkut scales what he can, and any ledges beyond the reach of ordinary men fall to Pyra, who can frankly manage most (if not all) of the cliff on her own. They do what they must to satisfy the needy forest, talking little the rest of the way. Before long they stand at the top, none the worse for fear, where the chest awaits. ]
no subject
Where only a single chest remains.
Having told him of its requirement to retrieve the page within beforehand, she steps to the side to allow him to approach it. ] ...Take your time, if you must. It might not be an easy decision for all.
[ Pyra had taken all of three seconds to choose hers. ]
no subject
Pocketing said page, he shuts the chest and turns to face Pyra. ]
Is that all? Then it's time to make our return.
no subject
Yes. Let's.
[ And with that, the two return to the town. ]
