[For all that Connor knows about the Philosopher's stone (which, admittedly, isn't much), he thinks that this quest might be fairly easy, especially doing it with Cairngorm. Both of them are analytical, and he knows he at least understands chemistry, and assumes the gem might, too. So together, he's pretty sure they can figure out alchemy.
That's what he's thinking, until he sees the cauldron and the ingredients. This might be more complicated than he hoped...
[ They have no idea what alchemy is to begin with, but from the looks of things, it's pretty similar to chemistry - coming from a society of minerals means they at least understand basic chemical names... that means something, right? Or at least that's what they thought, until they got here to this cauldron and saw all the strange materials they're supposed to combine as listed out. Spider eggs? Mushrooms??? ]
Let's just... find them in size order. [ There's a lot of strange equipment around that they have no idea what to do with, so they'd rather do something they know. ] We should be able to find everything in this clearing.
[Sounds reasonable enough to Connor. He nods, doing a quick scan to take stock of the various materials.]
They don't make things easy...
[He's getting the feeling that this will be even more complicated than making chocolate. And that was already pretty hard.]
We can divide the clearing by quadrants and search each one for the ingredients in turn. [He moves his arm to indicate the division.] Starting there? [He's picking a random one. There's no real method to this madness.]
[ They agree easily enough - they'd rather have some sort of process than go about it aimlessly, afterall. After his prompting, they don't beat around the bush (pun unintended) to start combing through that quadrant of the clearing, kneeling down to push aside some foliage to get a better look at some of the plants. ]
You'll have to tell me what a "mushroom" looks like. [ Strangely enough, there's actually some variety of wild plants growing here. ] I don't think I've seen one before.
Oh, a mushroom is a type of fungus. [He holds up his hands to try and describe the shape.] They have a stem, and then a flat, round top... I guess they look something like an umbrella?
[If they don't know what an umbrella looks like... Connor might have some problems here.
Meanwhile he's been scanning for any of the plants they're supposed to use... He's never heard of some of these before, so he's neatly pulling out a few that look suspicious and laying them aside.]
[ Damn... they don't know what fungus is OR what an umbrella is. This is turning out to be more difficult than they thought. His gesturing of what the shape must look like does help, and they do end up picking a few out of the bush. ]
Like this?
[ They hold the fungus up for clarification, while they rustle around for rocks to overturn with their other hand. That's where spiders live, right... ]
For Cairngorm
That's what he's thinking, until he sees the cauldron and the ingredients. This might be more complicated than he hoped...
But it's fine. They can figure this out!]
I wonder how we should start...

[He's not totally sure though. Mushrooms have never been important to him on a case before!]
Let's gather the ingredients over there and then... figure out what to do with them.
[While he digs around for... mealworms. Ew.]
