Event Twenty-One

Sometimes I feel happy,
Sometimes I feel sad.
Sometimes I feel curious,
Sometimes I feel mad.
Sometimes I feel silly,
Sometimes I feel surprised.
How many feelings,
Do I have inside?

t's another regular, normal day in the Town. There's absolutely nothing to show that anything could possibly be wrong; the birds are chirping, the sky is bright, and everything is absolutely, entirely wrong.

This time, though? The problem is internal. Slowly, bit by bit, people are going to stop feeling entirely like themselves -- or maybe even stop feeling at all.

And suddenly that nice, bright day doesn't seem quite so nice and not quite so bright any longer after all.

-- No. We're definitely not doing that.

[ his answer is both firm and immediate. Sure, maybe it doesn't even hurt them to do it, but -- how would they get their limbs back after the fact? What if they forgot about him? That might be even worse. All at once, all these worries start assaulting Lupin, and -- come to think of it, was he seriously about to leave town without even saying anything to them? He doesn't know what he was thinking, but suddenly, it sounds ludicrous. ]

Maybe this isn't such a good idea, after all. At least, not until I can find a boat we can both ride in.

[ the first time he's reconsidered any of this all day... wow. ]

I wouldn't care. If you really want to go.

[ They offer, even as he talks down from the idea. It's true that they wouldn't care so much if it meant they could stay together, even if they're not feeling particularly on board (pun intended) with the idea of leaving in the first place. If they sail these waters, they might get closer to finding a way out, which means closer to parting ways. And it's dangerous for him too. ]

But, I'd rather stay here with you. It's not like we'll find a boat like that anytime soon.

Well, I'd care. I'd miss you, [ he protests, rather defiantly. Their being wishy-washy about these things is nothing new - although they do seem more blase than usual about it all. He doesn't quite take note of it, in his current state. ]

You're right about the boat, though. We'll probably have to build it ourselves - or overhaul one of those old houseboats, at least. [ which had been his original plan before today, anyway... he sighs. ] Back to the drawing board.

I meant about breaking, so I could go with you. I don't care...

[ They huff back, just as defiantly. ]

I'd rather break apart than be separated.

[ This... is a mighty straightforward admission from Cairngorm, only seeming in their nature because it's delivered with the same textbook bluntness and the same grumpy expression. All the restraint they'd usually feel to not pick an argument over a small miscommunication is gone, and they're suddenly feeling like the physical issue about the boat is not the hot issue at the moment. ] You actually thought I'd let you go by yourself?

[ the typical grumpiness almost camouflages the tenderness of their statement - unsurprising, having them say something romantic about the same way they'd comment on a new outfit they dislike. Lupin blinks at them for a moment, their words apparently piercing through his town-addled skull at last, judging by the way his expression warms. It's not without some concern - he never likes how ready they are to sacrifice themself for him - but it's warm nonetheless.

Until their other comment. He pauses, brow furrowing, and then he scratches his head, apparently puzzled. ]

I... didn't think about it, to tell you the truth. I'm not sure how I didn't. Crossing this lake was all that was on my mind.

So you didn't think of me at all.

[ They scoff with a little bit of disbelief, standing from where they were crouching to put a hand on their hip. Thankfully, their town-addled brain actually feels some concern for his strange behavior, and they're kept from saying anything else incriminating on their feelings about him not thinking of them in favor of pressing the issue of his lack of foresight. ]

Is something wrong with you? Or do you just want to get out that badly?

[ oof!! He actually does feel guilty the moment they say it - and looks even more puzzled than before. In what world is Lupin not thinking about the gem he loves? He knows himself very well, and he can recognize that, objectively, that's not much like him at all. He makes a grumbling noise, discontent, and crosses his arms. ]

... Something's wrong with me... Maybe. One of the most important rules of being a gentleman thief is to always have a plan, so why didn't I...?

[ HRRRM ]

[ he SHOULD feel guilty... they feel sad that he didn't think of them. Now's not the time to obsess over their fears of overinvsesting though, even if the thought does cross their mind. ]

How should I know? You tell me. [ Maybe he's not as smart as he likes to think. Or maybe there really is something wrong, and they just can't tell. Either way, they're seeming a little Put Out still. ] Did you eat something weird again?

[ Though, he seemed to catch on pretty quickly to how strange he'd felt back then... and they'd also ended up getting In Their Feelings about the aftermath of that. They don't need the harvest festival episode 2. ]

It was a rhetorical question, [ he replies defensively. He rapidly goes through everything he's eaten recently in his mind, but nothing in particular sticks out, other than the weird chip things Lottie gave him the other day - and while he's aware she's not terribly fond of him, he doesn't think she'd poison him. Probably. ] I don't think so...

[ now he's worried about this. The first time he's been worried about something all day!! ]

It's like -- nothing in the world could bother me. I've been feeling that way all day. But there's no way I'd leave you behind in my right mind. Come to think of it, trying to cross the sea in a canoe's a bloody terrible idea, too.

[ he groans. what's happening NOW!! ]

[ Well... when they think about it... shouldn't they have told him that this was obviously a bad idea way before this? Now they can't even take the high horse position and say it really is a crappy idea because they didn't point it out either (sad.) ]

I guess that's pretty bad, even for you... [ There's a happy medium if they accept that something strange does seem to be going on while trashing the idea. ] Nothing looks wrong with you though.

[ Or at least, there isn't an obvious physical indication that something is amiss, like a loss of color or something along those lines. They assume the same must be true for them. Is it worse that they can't tell if there's a sinister event going on, or better that they're at least not being attacked by something vicious??? ]

You think it's the town...?

What do you mean, "even for me..."

[ grumble grumble. So maybe a lot of his ideas haven't panned out here, in retrospect. They were still good, dammit! But he lets the jab go, both because he'd be standing here all day if he took offense every time Cairngorm said something mean to him and because he's actually concerned about what's going on with him. ]

It's got to be the town. It's about that time, isn't it? Besides, I can't imagine I've irritated anyone here enough for them to do something like this to me.

[ Ironically, Cairngorm probably fills the role of person most often irritated by Lupin... but they'd never do anything serious to hurt him outside of the occasional hand crunch. They guess it really is the town. A familiar seeming feeling of stress starts to eat at them, their brows creasing upward. ]

Maybe we should get away from the water altogether. [ Before either of them do something they're going to majorly regret. Isn't the water perpetually cold, too? This is just stupid.] Whatever "something like this" is, if we leave, at least you won't freeze or get lost...

[ that's not irritation, cairngorm, it's LOVE!!! ]

Yeah... Maybe. Let's do that. [ he takes a few steps back from the docks even as he speaks, as if he doesn't trust himself to keep thinking straight. Here's the part where he might consider having someone lock him up to keep him in one place and out of trouble - the problem is that he can break out of pretty much any prison he's placed in, and a blind disregard for the consequences won't hamper his escape artist skills.

There is one person who's good at keeping a metaphorical leash on him, though... ] Maybe I should stay with you, actually...

[ They come along when he takes the steps away from the docks, raising a brow at his suggestion. ]

Were you planning on going someplace else? [ He should stay with them, right? They accent their little rhetorical question with a few more steps in the direction of town, shrugging. ] I feel like I'll just find you out here again later if I leave you behind.

[ Given the strangeness of both his and their behavior, they would vastly prefer to keep an eye on things than let things up to chance. At least this time he's not half a beast or in threat of hurting anyone but himself. ]
