[ Life doubly sucks. Cairngorm has a boyfriend who is stupid and speaks french, and Lottie is (once again) stuck at home. Okay, she could probably go outside, but why leave when her house rocks?

Maybe not the best justification of being a shut in, but at least Connor won't complain! Well, openly. Which is what she's hoping will happen now - she's taken to lying on the rug in her living room, wrapped in a thick blanket, in a rather tasteful fetal position as she stares at her phone.

Oh, wait, now she's reaching out for some toast she made. It's on a pretty plate she put right next to herself on the floor.. There's a matching one she made for Connor set on her coffee table but, he can't eat. She sighs loudly, rolling herself over to face him. ]

Connor, do you ever just like, think about stuff?

I'm always thinking about stuff. At least, I'm always processing things.

[Is that a joke? It might be a little bit of robot humor. He looks down at Lottie from where he's been sitting straight on her rug, legs crossed, mostly staring around at nothing until she says something to him.]

What stuff are you thinking about?

[ ...Is that, a joke? Lottie takes a second to stare him down, completely unsure of whether she should laugh or not before biting her toast. She uses the time she obnoxiously crunches on her toast to think, an obvious furrow to her brow. ]

I don't know! Life, things.. I don't know how to explain it, I guess.

[ She rolls over to put her toast back on the plate, kind of haphazardly using her jacket as a napkin. ]

I mean, I guess it has to do with my house being entirely empty all the time?! I feel like it's just me here 24/7. And you, sometimes, but you don't live here.

[That's true - he's been assigned to a different house. The idea of re-assigning himself has never occurred to him as a thing he can do, so he still considers that his house, even if he only goes back for regular sleep mode sessions and to check the network.

It feels... not right, that Lottie is alone here. Hmm.]

Can you go do things with Cairngorm? [Whether Connor knows about his relationship with Lupin or not, he doesn't grasp the social awkwardness of third wheeling anyway. He's just thinking about the situation logically.] Sounds like the way to remedy this is to not be alone in the house. If you're unhappy, I mean.

[ Lottie pulls at face at that suggestion, just thinking about all the terrible awful things that would happen if she had to endure Lupin for more than a few minutes. ]

Yeah, no thanks.. That's just not gonna happen. [ She snorts, satisfied with her own answer until she remembers Connor had asked her that, not her own brain intent on shit talking. ] Oh, I meant like, Cairngorm is just busy with more stuff now. And sometimes they'll already be gone without a word when I'm up..

[ Not a complete lie - since she's been sleeping in more on account of not wanting to deal with everything. ]

But it's like, more than just that.. Ugh, like.. Like, okay, it's mostly just dealing with this problem from a mutual I have. It's.. A lot?

A problem?

[That's interesting, enough that he'll set aside the other bit about Cairngorm for now. If it's a human problem, he's not sure how much help he can be, but if it's a different kind of problem, maybe he can do something about it?]

Maybe it would help if you tell me about it.

[He is easily sworn to secrecy after all.]

[ Hmm..... Maybe it would? ]

Okay... Well, you don't know this person, but my friend has been like going through stuff like emotionally with this one guy?

[ Lottie rolls over on her stomach, propping herself up with her arms to properly stare at Connor. Well, stare is a generous, she actually just takes a glance at him before giving attention to her phone. ]

They've been kind of dancing around each other, you know, having a lot of deep moments together that for sure isn't exclusively just for friends. Like, she just knows. And they hang out like all the time and my friend is interested in them.. Romantically! She told me that they kissed before but it was like for survival or whatever but there has to be something there?? You don't just KISS people without wanting something more!

Anyway this guy hasn't shown any signs that he wants to do anything? And she's been... You know, bugging me and stuff about like what to do!

[Oh. So it's one of those problems.

Connor knows immediately he's out of his depth here. The only real exposure he's ever had to romantic relationships is Hank's occasional grousing about his ex-wife and that one deviant couple he let run (a mistake, nothing more). But his software has been equipped to examine emotional actions and their consequences, so maybe he can work through this if he thinks carefully.

His LED pulses yellow while he gives it some thought. (He's also curious about what it means to kiss for survival - rescue breaths, perhaps?)

(Yeah, he's not putting two and two together.)]

...There are a lot of reasons he might not have shown interest. He could be shy, or they could be sexually incompatible. Or he's simply uninterested.

Can't your friend ask? [That seems like the obvious solution but also, going from what he's seen, the ones humans like the least.]

[ It's all kinds of agonizing, waiting for some sort of response to come from his mouth. What she's done is a gamble in itself, and she's completely aware of it. Things have been kind of terrible but, maybe things could work out? ]

But my friend is insanely HOT!

[ She's only ever been in one relationship herself, for years at that, so she can live with like.. The first two things he listed. Connor doesn't seem.. Shy? Per se?? Just, kind of dumb in anything that isn't inherently crime related??? And she can easily scratch out that second one - that's not the issue here. ]

Why WOULDN'T someone be interested in.. [ Lottie pauses, deliberately cutting herself off from her original train of thought. ] My FRIEND! [ Her nails are tapping furiously at her phone, disbelief coating her tone. ]

And NO, she can't! I just... Why would you even say that?? That can't be true!

[Apparently he said something... wrong?

Connor searches back over what he said, literally replaying the audio in his head. But nothing seems off about it - he merely presented perfectly rational options for why one person might not be interested in another person.

And yet, Lottie seems agitated with him. But why? He can't quite piece it together.

He needs more information.]

It's only a suggestion. But sometimes it works out that way, doesn't it? People have preferences about... who they want to date.

[Not that he would know, but he's trying here!]

[ She sets her phone face down on the carpet, trying (and failing) to control the aggression in the gesture, looking increasingly frazzled the longer she listens.

It's important she keep a level head if she wants to not break the ruse, but at this point she's already past that and extremely invested. Her brain can't find a reason not to go with her first instinctual response - ]

So what are you trying to say, huh! What are you implying?

[ She's pushing herself to sit up, running her hand over her forehead for any stray droplets of sweat, because if she lays down any longer she might throw a Real Life Tantrum™. ]

I thought it was already obvious how CRAZY the chemistry is between them? Why do preferences matter all of a sudden?

[Oh dear, that's only made it worse. Connor's brain buzzes as he tries to work out a solution to the question, but all his systems are concluding that Lottie is acting irrationally. But is she being irrational? She seems legitimately upset, he just doesn't know why.

The LED on his temple turns red.]

If their chemistry was that good, wouldn't they be doing something already? [Isn't that how it works? Don't people just... do things, when they both want to?]

Maybe I don't understand the parameters of the question. I'm not really designed for these sorts of things.

[This is his desperate attempt at trying to calm this situation.]

[ Despite how helpful Connor is trying to be, it's simply not the answer Lottie wants to hear. It only serves to make her more upset, eyes watering and voice raising. ]

I don't know, would they? That's why I'm bringing it up! I'm the one asking YOU here, so how come you can't give me an answer?!

[ She picks up the stray piece of toast near her, angrily taking a bite out of it to try and distract herself. But she doesn't put it down, so caught up with the situation, that it ends up hovering in the air awkwardly, threatening to break in half with the sheer grip she has on it. ]

..Oh my god, is, is this funny to you? [ Her voice wobbles, hurt laced in her tone. ] Are you doing this on purpose??

No, of course not!

[He doesn't know how he could find any of this funny, and he would never want to upset her on purpose. Lottie seems hurt now, perhaps even close to tears, and he has no idea how to right this situation.

Until he starts to think about her words more clearly, and a realization slow starts to dawn on him. She's asking him, and getting so upset that he won't answer more definitively...]

Are you...

[Could it be that Lottie is really asking him...]

telling me one of your friends is interested... in me?

[ Logically, she knows that Connor wouldn't outright be malicious, he's too nice for that, but Lottie can't help but draw back to what could happen. What if he starts laughing at her, when she started crying, like Caroline did? ]

You're a super expensive android detective from the future, who solves mysteries for a living... So Connor, BE REAL about this!

[ So she wipes at her eyes, being careful of her prescription glasses, and sniffs away any signs of her runny nose. It isn't a perfect solution - even with taking special care to fix her face she still looks apprehensive, still uselessly gripping that ripped piece of bread, but at least a bit relieved that he isn't purposely messing with her.

That sensation does little to dull her disbelief at how he hasn't put it together, and yet it's not enough for her to openly admit it, either. ]

What friends do I have?!

[That gives Connor even more pause, because... he isn't sure. There's Cairngorm, but he's pretty certain Cairngorm has no interest in him, and beyond that and her friends back home...]

But... you said, your friend...

[The pieces of the puzzle are finally snapping together.]

You... meant yourself...?

[Wait. But... but wouldn't that mean that Lottie is expecting something... out of him!?

Connor's LED does back down to yellow, but he's still staring at her with a wide-eyed look.]

But you... And I'm... I'm an android, I can't...

[Who knew a machine could be left speechless?]

[ To be fair, Lottie hasn't really thought that far ahead about the glaringly obvious problem of him being machine and her being organic. She kind of figured she'd deal with that later, after.. Okay, she didn't really think about the step before that either.

In fact, she's just reminded how she didn't plan any of this well out at all as her eyes start to water again, really letting his words (as few as they were) sink in. Feeling more and more jaded, she can only stew over the one thing she's always had prepared - her emergency Get Out of Any Situation Free card.. ] Yeah.. That's what I figured. [ ..RUNNING AWAY!!!!

Which is what she does (not necessarily run, but you know, frantically walk) after getting up and throwing the toast somewhere on the ground. When her absurdly thick blanket is bunched in her hands, she storms off in the direction of her room at the end of the hall. ]

[Connor stares after her sudden departure, stunned. For a moment he doesn't move at all, his LED pulsing quickly, yellow, as he churns over the information he has now.

So Lottie is interested in him, in a romantic or sexual way. But he's just a detective android - he isn't built for this sort of thing. And more than that, he isn't human; wouldn't Lottie rather have someone who had feelings and thoughts of their own to be with?

But... she's interested in him, instead. And now she's upset, and running away.

Suddenly, he remembers the movie they watched together not that long ago - The Proposal. Andrew had thought it was odd that Margaret wanted to be with him, too. And when she ran... he chased her.

That's what he should do, too. At the very least to explain himself better.

He pauses to deposit the toast she had dropped back onto its plate, then heads down the hall to her room, knocking politely, but loud enough to be heard.]

Miss Person?

[ By the time Connor cleans up after Lottie's impromptu mess and knocks at her door, she's already hid herself under her covers like the gremlin she is, just staring at the door - both hoping for, and dreading, the idea of him doing the exact thing he's doing right now.

She looks, and feels, ridiculous.. Just sitting in the dark in her room, sweating profusely, acutely aware of how dry her mouth is. What's worse? Indirect rejection, or rejection rejection? She could probably live in petty agony if she just ignored him right now, pretend this never happened, then cut all ties. In fact, that'd be her first solution!!

But she can't bring herself to stay quiet long enough to do just that. Clutching at her comforter, Lottie mentally braces herself for something completely out of her comfort zone - ]

...It's not locked. [ She calls out, voice a bit strained. ] But.. Leave the lights off! You.. You can't look.

[Leaving the lights off is pretty useless since Connor will be able to see in the dark anyway, but... if she doesn't want him to look, then he can comply with that.

So he opens the door, leaving the lights off and also switching off his night vision. Now the room is just as dark for him as it would be for a normal human - he can't see her well, under the covers.]

Alright. Lights stay off.

[He comes the rest of the way in, letting the door swing back behind him, not all the way shut but not exposed to the rest of the house.]

Miss Person... I'm sorry I upset you. It wasn't my intention. I was just surprised, that's all.

[ Just as he can't see her, she can't see him. But her burning, burning desire to know if he's as distraught as she is nearly overpowers her stubbornness about the lights. She resorts to simply chewing on her lip, forcing herself to focus on his words and not the way she's shaking from nervousness.

And she hears him, loud and clear. After all, the house is silent save for him and the rustling of her sheets, maybe the occasional sniffle from her person. There's a moment where she indulges in her tears, releasing a shaky breath before speaking. ]

..Why, [ She bypasses his apology, not ready to tackle that yet. So nitpicking on this one, stupid (but important, to her) detail is what she responds with instead - ] why won't you ever call me Lottie?

[He's surprised that's what she comes back with - it doesn't really follow what he said.

But at least it's a question with a simple answer.]

Because you didn't tell me to.

[Because he's an android, and he's programmed to be polite, not personable, and he's supposed to address humans as they say to. Because he still doesn't really understand the many unwritten rules of familiarity between people.

Because he's more than a little bit clueless.]

It's what I'm supposed to do.

[ It's not like she didn't expect that answer, deep in the back of her mind, but it still stings. And it still irritates her, the anger not stemming directly from Connor (okay, maybe a little), himself, but just the way he was made. The hot guy had to be a detective robot from the future, huh? ]

Okay.. Right. Fine! That's fine. This is fine. [ Her tone clearly says the opposite, but she's trying. As ready and willing her heart is to get worked up over something small, she doesn't want things to sour so quickly. Not when she's still desperately invested in what he has to say, or even how this'll all go.

She exhales, hunching over to wipe her snot on the sleeve of her shirt. ]

I don't care what you're supposed to do.. What do you want to do?

I...

[He's an android. He can't have wants. Right? He's not supposed to have wants... He wasn't made to have wants.

But...

But he can't really deny, even if he wants to, that he likes being around Lottie. Likes it, even though it doesn't make any sense, because how can he like anything if he's just a machine?

Is this how the other androids felt... when they finally went deviant? Wanting something, even though they shouldn't?]

I... I think, I want to be around you. Even though I shouldn't want anything. I don't... really understand, but I like being around you more than I like... not being around you. No, it's that... I don't like that.

[A pause, and Connor's light flashes yellow, then red, then back to blue.]

More than that... I don't want you to be upset. I don't want to be the reason you're upset.

[ It's not often that Lottie deliberately seeks people out - like the way she is now, heading over to a house she doesn't think she's mentally ready to be near. She's debated all morning about texting Jion, but somehow that's even more nerve wracking then doing it in person. Too much anxiety, too much dread.

Also she might make typos. That's equally as bad as those other things she listed.

She feels kind of dumb, standing there with some snacks she brought, a bit of a peace offering since she actually has no idea if he died or something. Gotta stay positive, though! Maybe he's just severely injured? Okay, bad thoughts. Lottie nervously knocks at the front door (after almost walking away twice).

God, what is she, fifteen? Only high schoolers go to their friends house and knock to hang out. ]

Heyy, Jion? Are you there..?

[ At least she gets a prompt response. The knock at the door is answered by a muffled, 'just a minute!' that's clearly been shouted from across the room. It's followed shortly by hurried footsteps, and Jion opens the door, looking a little disoriented. ]

Oh, hey Lottie!

[ Jion usually looks plain at best, but he looks a little more disheveled than usual, his shirt rumpled and hair messy, like he just threw it on. Still, he gives her a friendly grin. ]

What's up? You wanna come in?

[ Truth be told, he was just about to ... do something. But he figures it can wait. It's not every day that Lottie shows up at his place, after all, so maybe something happened? He swings the door open wide in case she wants to come in. ]

[ She was almost hoping it'd take him a minute so she could bolt - but she's too late, and he's already opening the door by the time she reminds herself to put a smile on. At least he's not dead, right??? Right! ]

Oh, uh, sure? [ She focuses so much on looking pleasant that her brain kind of short circuits on a real response, instead nodding. It's the sight of him stepping aside, to give her a real good view of the house, that prompts her to actually walk inside. ] Thanks.

[ She hugs her bag of goodies close to her chest once she scoots past Jion at the doorway and into the living room. With little idea of what to do next, much less what's kind of socially acceptable since this isn't her house and she can't be gross, Lottie.. just kind of stands awkwardly, staring at everything. ]

This is my first time in here, [ Much less any other house that isn't her own but, you know, details. ] feels kind of wild..

[ To be honest, he doesn't really have guests often, either. Jion's much more liable to drop in on other people, and back home, he'd never really had a place for other people to visit. So while he let Lottie in without thinking about it much, now that she's actually inside, he low-key panics a little. ]

Um, sorry, it's not that much to look at. I woulda made it a bit nicer if I knew you were dropping by, um -- here, you wanna sit there?

[ There's some furniture, at least, even if it's kind of old and shoddy-looking. And modest decorations -- his old roommates had put up most of those, and he hadn't had the heart to take them down. ]

Oh and uh, let me get you something to drink. Hold on, okay? Sorry, I'm not really used to having guests, but I don't wanna be rude, so!

[ And with an awkward laugh he's off, heading into what looks like the kitchen area. Lottie's left alone for a bit with just the muffled sounds of him rustling around fetching something or the other. ]

Er, it's okay.. It's totally my bad for not like, calling or something! [ Like she CAN call anyone, she realizes mere seconds after she responds. Lottie still does as suggested, sitting on the first chair she sets her eyes on.

She feels like she doesn't even have a chance to respond and make things less weird with the sheer intensity Jion leaves the room and into the kitchen. Her hand is lifted, midway into a placating gesture to stop him because she also brought soda but.. she, eventually, just resigns to what's happening.

They're both just... REALLY awkward about things, and Lottie just has to come to terms with it. So she tries to distract herself by being nosy (but, politely!), staring at the decorations strewn about the house as Jion struggles in the kitchen. ]

Hey, where did you find all these pieces? [ Because, uh, she didn't know Jion had such good taste?? ] Like, the nice looking stuff on the walls?

[ Life sucks. Cairngorm is off doing rock things, Lottie's stuck in her house, the town got attacked by dragons, people probably died... She doesn't know! But there is one sure fire fact she can count on, and it's Connor never flaking on plans. Okay, she maybe messaged him under the pretense of giving him clothes after the Pool Incident™ but.. Still counts.

She swishes the wine in her glass, taking the chance to brood quietly in the mess that is her life as she waits for Connor to come out of her bathroom. ]

How's it fit? [ Granted, she wasn't able to find any of Sunny's clothes (she forgot she burned them [gotta live and DIE petty, Lottie always says]), but she did come across some merch she hadn't sold yet deep in her closet. All Lottie™ brand sweats, shirts, and hoodies - with everything but the sweats having a print of her face on it. ] It's not too obnoxious, right?

[Connor examines himself in the mirror, looking over the shirt he's wearing now. It's... odd, to see himself without his normal uniform. It doesn't match up at all to how he usually looks. But he couldn't deny that his normal uniform is starting to look pretty haggard after all it's been through - the tie is ruined, and the rest of it has holes in it and other damage.

Essentially, it's pretty sad. Not that it really bothers Connor. It's not like he has any sort of attachment to it.

It's illegal for him to wear clothes that don't say "ANDROID" on them, but it's different here. There aren't really any laws at all. His systems have run through this and all come up the same: wear the clothes.

That they have Lottie's face on them... well, at least everyone will know who they belong to?

He comes out, wearing a shirt and sweats.]

It fits fine, and I don't think it's obnoxious. I do look... different, though.

[ Well, seeing the clothes in the box sure is a different experience than seeing Connor rep the merch. Lottie briefly considers what life would be like if she was still actively designing, packing up her posters and gifts for fans so she can see her face everywhere (literally). ]

..You're officially part of the Lottie Person fan club, so of course you're gonna look different! [ She settles on that, taking a sip of her drink. Her face scrunches as she forces it down - ] All my kids are cool and trendy! Be proud!

[ Plus, not a lot of people here have access to this prime athleisure lewk.. Embrace it. ]

Oh yeah, where'd you leave your stuff again? I can try and fix it, maybe wash it. [ She has all the things she needs to make repairs... Somewhere here. Despite how glam Gem Haus™ is, as a whole, Lottie's room is still terribly messy. ] Wait, would I have to hand wash it since it has LEDs in it..?

[Officially part of the Lottie Person fan club, huh? He feels his lip quirk up in amusement over that one.

As for his stuff...]

[He ducks back into the bathroom again to grab his tattered clothing from where he's folded it as neatly as possible. It looks like a machine did it (because technically a machine did do it).]

It's all machine washable. [Thanks, future tech!] I'd be grateful if you could fix it. I think if anyone could it would be you.

[Being a fashion designer and all.]

[ She won't lie, the way he folds his clothes is so aesthetically pleasing. But still, if she wants to see the damages she's going to have to examine it. Lottie extends her free hand for him to give his things, gesturing for him to hand it over until it gets in her palm. ]

You're lucky you're friends with the only person in this place who knows how.. And I don't do this for just anyone, so feel special! [ Okay, so maybe Cairngorm gets this treatment whenever they rip at their clothes.. But still, for someone who's only used to mending her own things, it's a big deal!

His blatant praise also helps perk her mood, if her smug expression is anything to go by. ]

These very same hands have fixed pieces from Dior, so your fancy uniform is as good as new.

[He smiles at that, because he thinks it must be pretty special, if she's acting like that about it.]

Then I'll leave it in your capable hands. Thank you.

[He has the utmost confidence in her abilities! For now, he's content with the clothes he's wearing.]

Is this all you wanted me for? [He doesn't have any particular reason to leave, but if he doesn't have any particular reason to stay either, he doesn't want to intrude...

Even if he's pretty sure it's not intruding anymore. Lottie seems to be comfortable having him around, he knows that much.]

[ She kind of discards the clothes behind her somewhere, taking another bold sip of her drink before focusing back on Connor. Her cheeks are a little warm, although she isn't taking the time to distinguish if it's from his kind words or the tasty wine. ]

Oh, no.. I mean, it's not really a need.. [ Here's the big problem: how to explain without sounding sad that you kind of missed him! And was worried about the dumb dragon thing! And that you're also just really, really bored!! ] We can just hang out?

[ Lottie scoots over to the side of her bed, even discarding a portion of her blankets for him to use. ]

I got the HD thingy connected to my TV so I can stream something.. I know it's probably old for you but movies from my decade are pretty good still!

[He smiles, coming over and sitting on her bed, taking the blanket after a moment and arranging it on his lap in a way that probably wouldn't actually warm anyone, but that's fine for him.]

I admit, I haven't seen a lot of movies. I don't really watch them.

[Watching movies is a thing for people who need to fill their time. Which Connor doesn't really need to do - he's an android, after all.

But he is a little... curious.]

[He's happy to stay, really.]

[ Lottie silently beams, a bit too pleased at having convinced Connor to loiter around in her house. It's mostly the fact that he actively chose to stay, outside of her trying to be sneaky about it. ]

Yeah, I kinda figured.. [ She reaches over for her laptop, loudly pressing on some keys to wake it up so she can scroll through her library. When it works, she does just that, the light from the laptop practically illuminating the room. ] It's okay, though!

I happen to be something of an expert, [ Not really but..... Who else can prove her wrong???? One of the blessings in disguise about this place! ] and since I think superhero movies might be a bit much for an intro to film, what about The Proposal?

The Proposal?

[If he had access to the internet he would search it - as it is, he tries to gather what information he can from Lottie's laptop. If he can interface with it, which should be simple as she has it unlocked, he can see...

His LED flashes yellow for a moment, then he looks back at her.]

[He has no idea who those people are.]

[ Woah! Lottie startles, if only because she was ready to give him a rundown on a movie she was sure he didn't know. Her brows crease, lips pressed into a firm line as she gives thought to how he could've done it before giving up. ]

Huh. Guess you beat me to it! Alright, since you already know what it's about then I don't have to explain it to you.

[ Which is easier for her in the end - she'd probably just spoil it by accident anyway knowing herself. A smile breaks out on her face as she looks up between the screen on her laptop to the TV hanging on her wall. ]

..Hey, [ She says to Connor, fiddling with the display settings. ] is Ryan Reynolds still hot in the future?

[He has to think about it. Ryan Reynolds is an owner of a few dozen CyberLife androids, so he's in their customer database - Connor doesn't have complete access to it at the moment, but he can pull up high priority customers...]

Hmm... He's sixty-two now, so... I think he's what you would generally call a "silver fox."

[Connor smiles a little at that, mostly glad that he knew the right slang. Of course, as an android, he shouldn't really have an concept of what "hot" is... But he's been to the Eden Club so he has a good idea.]

Wait.. Silver fox?

Connor, [ She hits a button on her keyboard with a laugh escaping her lips, the movie starting to play on the screen. ] how do you know that!

I even forgot that was a thing.. We usually just call people who are attractive a 'hot person'. [ Granted, there's no doubt in her mind he's still just as ripped as the last time she saw him - so she won't be arguing on him with that. It's just so odd, but funny, hearing that come from his mouth. ] Did you pick it up from some super scandalous detective work? A coworker??

[What? Was it wrong after all? Or just outdated?]

I heard it somewhere... [Probably a cop, now that he thinks about it.] I thought it was still acceptable.

[But maybe not? Human language is always evolving and it's very complicated!

(Incredibly, he might be a little embarrassed.)]
