Xie Lian?

[ The name comes to mind with the smells and sounds of cooking he can hear upon entering the house. It’s disorienting, having just woken from whatever spell had bound him to the onsen for so long, but even now he can tell that something isn’t quite right.

There’s someone else in here. Someone distinctly not Xie Lian, because if nothing else, the cooking actually smells appetizing. If it weren’t for that, he might’ve wondered if something was amiss.

Still, there’s no point in beating around the bush. He enters the kitchen without further ado and looks visibly surprised upon seeing a new face. For a moment, there’s little else he can say but ]

[Getting used to using a wood stove wasn't too hard...though he still needs help lighting it right now.

The oven was a whole other matter altogether though he was getting better at that too. He hasn't noticed anyone coming in to the house as he's peeking in to see how it's coming along (better. It wasn't even the slightest bit burnt this time!).

He's already taking the pie out when he hears a voice he doesn't recognize from behind him. He turns slowly, still holding a pie, having taken some cloths in lieu of proper oven mitts, and looks surprised for a moment before he smiles.]

Uh. Hey.

[He knew there was another roommate though not having met them he didn't know if this was him???

Then he shrugged because, it's not as if he and Xie Lian can eat this whole pie on their own anyway. So he lifted it a little.] Want some pie...?

[ …You know what, he’ll just accept this. ]

Ahaha, what an unexpected welcome. [ And a very welcome…welcome. Beings such as he might not need to eat, but that doesn’t mean he can’t appreciate some tasty home cooking. ]

But if you deem me worthy, then I shall gladly join you. [ Join him, because of course he won’t leave anyone out!! ] Had I caught a whiff of this at the bathhouse, then surely I might have woken from my long slumber that much sooner.

[Worthy, huh.

He grins as he sets the pie down on the counter.]

Well, I'm not sure how someone could be unworthy of pie. [Because it's pie.] So I guess we're eating then.

[Also time to pick out two clean plates and something to cut the pie with.]

I'm Jim by the way. I moved in not too long ago. [Because his own housemate disappeared.] It's nice to meet you.

[ The last time he ate some pie it nearly ended in grief okay ]

The pleasure is mine, Jim. I am Archer. [ He’ll just fish around in the cupboards, handing Jim a knife handle-first. ]

I presume that Xie Lian has invited you into our humble abode? Then you have nothing but my utmost gratitude.

[Oh, awesome. He gives Archer a grateful little grin because he's....still getting used to this kitchen.

He cuts two slices of pie and places each carefully on a plate.]

Yeah. We're friends and the guy I was staying with disappeared so... [He shrugged. It wasn't much of a story. He was a bit curious though...]

...why gratitude?

[He might have expected 'welcome' or something like that, but gratitude...?

While he's waiting for an answer he slides one plate over to Archer.]

[ Look, he’s useless in the kitchen too, but—cardinal rule when entering a new place: know where all the dangerous sharp, pointy things are. ]

Because someone was able to look after Xie Lian in my absence. [ He murmurs a thanks for his plate as he sits down, unable to hide that look of sympathy when Jim mentions that he’s lost his roommate. Story of his life, bro. ]

I would not have wanted him to endure as I have…ah, it would be so sad indeed…

[Oh. That makes sense, except...]

Then you really don't need to thank me. He's my friend, so of course I'd help if I can. Besides, he's the one who offered me somewhere to stay.

[He sits down with his own plate of pie.]

Being in a weird place like this...it's only bearable when we don't have to be alone, right?

[ He thinks of many months spent alone, after losing the sole occupant of this house. But really, little Jonathan at least had a dog with him, whereas Tristan…well, it doesn’t matter now, though the smile he offers Jim is a pained one. ]

Yes, precisely. In any case, I am glad to know that you shall not be alone anymore and that, moreover, I can call you my friend.

[He definitely spots that sad smile. It's a sobering reminder that all of them...could disappear at any moment. It wasn't that he wanted to stay forever. He still had to get home, but the thought of going home while leaving everyone else here...it felt...wrong.]

Me too. Hopefully, none of us will have to be on our own here.

[ Such admirable optimism in one so young… ]

Such is left to the whims of Fate. [ But Fate is generally nicer to everyone than it is to him, so this is…vaguely positive!! Go, him!!! ]

But I needn’t trouble you with such grim talk. This pie of yours…ah, how sublime. I have not had proper home cooking in so long.

[ Sorry, Xie Lian… ]

[...that's true. But, well. Jim would rather not think about things he can't do anything about.

He laughs, a bit sheepishly.]

Well, I don't know about sublime....but I do know my way around a kitchen. [Though.......who was cooking before then? He has doubts about Xie Lian's eating habits and he did suggest they add vegtables to hot chocolate one time, but Jim couldn't imagine that things would be that bad.] It'd be better if I could get my hands on some ice cream to go with it.

Then this shall be your domain, as you please, though I do not need to eat. [ Xie Lian is another matter, but he’ll probably insist on doing his share of the cooking anyway… ]

And I know of a woman who can cast ice magic. If you are truly determined…

You don't? [He's automatically curious about that. Because even trolls had to eat...even if they eat socks and cats.]

Really? That might actually work... [And now he's thinking about it as he taps his fork against the plate.] Maybe it can be like making ice cream with liquid nitrogen... [Something he's only seen on Youtube and never...attempted himself.]

[ Trolls please…cats can give you indigestion ]

Well, I am not certain how it all works. [ The not needing to eat part and the liquid nitrogen part both. The Throne of Heroes didn’t quite fill him up on all the intricacies of modern science, after all! Plus all of this is only so much incomprehensible magical hooey to him. ]

But far be it for me to dissuade creativity in the kitchen. [ He puts up with Xie Lian for a reason, ok ]

If there are any other ingredients you need, however, I would be happy to fetch them for you. By now I’ve become quite familiar with this place.

I only understand it a little. It wasn't something I've ever been able to try but I've seen a video or two about it.

That'd be great! Xie Lian's helping me with getting meat but I...can probably use all the help I can get with this. Back where I'm from, if I needed anything I just go to the store so I don't know anything about gathering food or hunting.

Ah, yes. That is one other thing I am curious about. I perceive that you hail from the 21st century?

[ Or at least somewhere in the ballpark? Jim’s decidedly modern mannerisms and ways of thinking didn’t fly over his head. ]

I am. [It's interesting that Archer can spot that. Does it mean he's also from Earth? Or was it something her heard about here?]

[Since that way of speaking didn't really seem very modern.]

I do not belong to that era. [ But he figures that Jim can tell as much. ]

Though I am familiar with it. But as you are a new arrival, I am deeply curious…what was the year before you were brought here?

[ It’s literally a matter of life and death, Jim!!! ]

But what era are you from?

[Because he's kind of curious as to how you're familiar with the 21st century...maybe he was from the future?]

Oh. [ That’s two years off. HMMM…well he needn’t trouble Jim about that terrible, terrible apocalypse occurring in 2018 and all, so excuse him while he changes the subject: ]

I am from what you call the Middle Ages.

[It's fine. He helped set into motion a potential apocalypse that may be happening in a few weeks back home. It's a thing.]

Oh, wow! That's a really long time ago! That's even before Blinky and the other trolls made a home in Trollmarket! [Maybe? He's pretty sure anyway. Though he wasn't.......good enough in history to say for sure off the top of his head.]

[ Why do the humans keep bringing this upon themselves… ]

Haha, is that so? [ Okay, so maybe their timelines don’t align precisely, but that makes things all the more intriguing. ]

You seem to have lived a more storied life than I’d realized. [ Which is a good thing, considering their situation… ]

Were you perhaps a mage in your world?

[Technically. It would have happened regardless because of there were some trolls absoltely intent on making it happen. But like. He has some responsibility here.]

Actually, [He said while gesturing with his fork.] my life was pretty average up until a little less than a year ago. Until I discovered that trolls were real and that they were living under my town.

[That was when his life went completely insane.] I'm not a mage, but I did find an amulet that was created by a wizard. [GIVE HIM A MOMENT. He reaches into he puts down the fork and pulls out the Amulet.]

An ominous piece. [ Of course he’d think that. But he doesn't really know how that thing works, anyway. ]

So it seems that Fate has chosen you for a higher purpose as well.

It's not that bad. [~~Too bad Jim doesn't know what it's made of at this point.~~ He had resented it at first, and it had been at its worst when he was suddenly attacked by an evil troll just for having it in his possession. But...] It's gotten me out of trouble more often than not and given me the power to save my friends so... [SHRUG.] It's not that bad.

[As for fate...well, he'd seen a what if scenario of the events that would have come to pass if he didn't have it and...well.]

I think...at this point, I've chosen this destiny as much as it has chosen me.

Then you are fortunate. [ For what? The weird amulet or the fact that he’d taken over his own destiny? ]

Not many would have had a choice in the matter. [ Not for nothing does Tristan have legendarily bad luck, after all. ]

I tried to tell Blinky, 'no' the first time he brought it up. But the amulet chose me and...when it comes down to it, who else did they have? Abadoning them isn't a choice I could have made.

[So in a way it wasn't...a choice, exactly. But it felt like...if he could choose again, he'd still choose to pick up that amulet that day...and even if he were to lose it, he'd still choose to fight.

He was, after all, the Trollhunter. Amulet or no amulet.]

How sad… [ Buddy, you’ve just established yourself as a Grade-A Chosen One and now Tristan’s deeply worried about you. ]

And yet…how noble. I only fear that being thrust into such a destiny will end badly for you.

[...why are all the adults so worried about him? He's fine!

He can't say with confidence it wouldn't...but at the same time, it couldn't because ending badly for him would probably mean Gunmar wins and that wasn't...acceptable at all.]

We're...working on making sure that doesn't happen. Things have been fine so far...as long as my friends and I stick together I'm sure we can make it through this.

[ His king and several other knights and colleagues of his are various degrees of heroic Chosen Ones (with a few villainous ones thrown in for flavor). He can’t help but worry—if nothing else, out of professional courtesy.

In fact, he seems to grow sadder as Jim gives his very heroic speech about sticking together with his friends. Yes, this guy’s pretty much a textbook example…! ]

Certainly, friendship is the balm of the soul and the wheels which carry us along the road of life. And yet…your friends also cannot help not being here. How sad…

[ This is all conjecture on his part, of course. There’s still the possibility that Jim does have someone from home hanging around in Chroma, but after their talk of lost roomies…well… ]

[He doesn't consider himself a textbook anything...not even a textbook reader except when he has to cram for a test.

He shrugs.]

Well, I'm making new friends here. There are a lot of people I can rely on here.

[ …Okay, even he can’t argue with that. ]

Indeed, and you may count myself among them.

[He's trusted his life to people he's only just met more than once and sometimes even people who had previously tried to kill him. So like...this isn't a new thing.

And, like every other time, Jim is very willing to just...trust people.]

Same to you. I still have a lot to learn but if you need it, I'll have your back.

[ What a thing to say to a spirit brought back from the dead to guide the living. But he’s avoided telling Jim as much, seeing as how they’d only just met and he wouldn’t want to give the boy a shock.

So instead, he only replies with: ]

You are so very much like my master.

Your master?

[He's curious! He hasn't really ever been told he was like anyone...it probably has to do with being the first human trollhunter and therefore being...very much unlike his predecessors.]

Oh, yes. They are about your age, I think. Like you, they also have a great and terrible destiny to accomplish.

[ As much as talking about Master made him feel sad right now, Tristan can’t help but smile at the thought of them. ]

But they are also fond of making new friends, for they place a great deal of trust in others. Yes…I believe that we will get along quite well, Jim.

[It's strange. Before the Amulet, he'd watched a few cartoons with a plot line like this: random, average teen is Chosen By Destiny and becomes a hero.

Yet, the reality of it was entirely different.

And yet...]

I'm sure he'll be fine if he has you helping him.

[Good friends made a whole world of difference in these situations. And Tristan sounded so fond of his master...yes. Jim is sure he'd be fine with a friend like this.]

I'm sure we'll be great friends.
