Fairy GodKeigo

[Keigo isn't taking any chances on technicalities. A fairy godmother is a woman, and while he can't do anything about not physically being one, he does have a certain costume at his disposal. It was the ultimate in humiliation the week he was forced to wear it, but now he tells himself it's insurance. His only other vague impression of fairy godmothers is they have a magic wand. He's carrying a stick. It'll have to work.

That takes care of the fairy godmother look. As for fairy godmother actions, that's about as fuzzy as the magic wand idea, but he thinks it has something to do with giving people what they want.

His own request would be for another tin of the quest reward ointment that could have warmed him up if he hadn't already used it all up.

Regardless, Keigo, in dedicated questing mode, approaches people with a swish of his wand (he thinks it's a swish - it's more of a hand spasm) and asks:]

[Keigo has a lot of strong contenders for "worst moment of his life." Most of them involve social rejection or life-threatening peril.

But now, this. This is the worst thing. He's a frog and- No, that's it. He's a frog. It's terrible. Full stop.

(Various approximations of Keigo as a frog.)]

Power Swap

[Keigo's "power" is more or less the ability to see ghosts, which isn't all that useful here. You can start off by tagging his offer on the forum or handwave that they set it up from there. He wouldn't agree to a trade if the powers sounded dangerous or frightening, but what he doesn't know won't hurt him? Until it does.

[She's heard about the sailormoon costume from Shiho, but actually seeing it is...something else.

She bites her lip to stop from laughing at him but it still takes her a moment to actually speak.]

A camera would be nice.

[OK, when it comes to people who will have to see him in this costume, Kaoru isn't the worst choice. Shiho probably already told her all about it and maybe even did a dramatic reenactment of when she had to get his jacket to save him from his skirt creeping up when he stretched.

But her wish is the worst choice.]

How am I supposed to find a camera?

[Is there a time limit on fulfilling the wish? Because the only way he can think of to get a camera is to wait for another portal to open up into Karakura.

Huh...that's strange. His "wand" feels like it's almost buzzing in his hand.]

[Given how Asano-dono had helped him understand Halloween, he seems a natural choice for whom to approach about advice for this set of quests.
And, talking in person is far easier than typing over the forum.

Yet he was not quite expecting to be approached by Asano himself, and in such a costume?

Blinking and smiling awkwardly because he's not sure what to make of this, he straight-forwardly says,]

I was going to ask you about what would be involved in "acting as someone's fairy godmother"...

I'm trying to be but what am I supposed to do? Pull a camera out of-

[As Keigo waves his arms in protest, there's a spark of magic from the stick, and a camera appears on the ground.

The problem is, it's not the latest model. It comes with five plates, and although there's no way of knowing this without trying it out, the plates will magically develop, so as not to make this granted wish a complete bust.]

I'll switch to prose until some tag when I inevitably forget.

Coming across Tonbokiri is another best-case scenario. Someone who won't make fun of him!

But the way he's not even mentioning the costume... It's like when something awkward is happening, like two people having a big argument, and you're trying to pretend it isn't. He's judging him, isn't he?

Luckily, helping Tonbokori understand modern life always makes him feel useful and knowledgeable, so that gives him something else to turn his focus to.

"You've come to the expert! Fairy godmothers are women in fancy dresses who grant wishes with their magic wands." All doubts are gone; the success of his first attempt at being a fairy godmother proved he had this right. That the wish didn't go exactly right is a minor detail. "And I don't know how it happened, but when Kaoru wished for something, my wand really worked!" He holds out the stick, in case there's any confusion on the wand point.

His eyes round in attention, he nods along at each point, and peers at the presented stick.

"I see! You truly performed magic? That is amazing! So acting like a fairy godmother is... to have fancy dress, a wand, and grant wishes..."

His fascinated smile turns slightly abashed for a moment.

"As you are a fairy godmother now, would you grant a wish for me? I don't particularly need anything, but, as a practical demonstration, and for the sake of completing a quest?"

"Kaoru asked for a camera and a camera came out of nowhere! I don't know if it's the dress or the wand or wanting to be someone's fairy godmother that made it possible, but I wouldn't ignore any of them if you want to be sure you're doing the quest right." The more he rationalizes the costume, the less strange it is to wear it, right?

"Ask for anything you want!" Keigo holds his wand with confidence. If he can make a camera appear he can do anything!

Tonbokiri is low-key worried about the dress as a part of this, but he'll worry about that later.

For now, a wish!

"Yes... How about, daifuku from your Japan? Your era is far beyond my experience - I would be happy to see what kind of daifuku you have."

Daifuku? This will be even easier than he thought! There must be more types of daifuku than there are types of cameras, but whatever kind shows up, it won't be an old-fashioned one that's too hard to use. Eat.

He can already feel the stick buzzing with magic again.

"Daifuku, coming right up!" Picturing the treat in his mind, Keigo points the wand at the ground.

Just like Tonbokiri wanted, modern daifuku appear, modern packaging and all. Not quite like Tonbokiri wanted, they're made with ice cream.

And as an added magical treat, eating one will turn Tonbokiri's tongue the same color for an hour or two. If he questions Keigo on it, he will act like that's what they always do.

Wow, impressive! Just like that, Asano-dono worked magic and granted his wish!

"Astonishing! Thank you very much."

Looking down at the result, though, he's not sure what to make of it.
That is, he can read the text on the package, and he sees the picture...

This is so exciting! Just as asked, a new kind! (He's trying to look calm, but his feelings are obvious.) Picking up the package he fumbles a moment before peeling the top open to reveal the nine little white mounds. And oddly-

"It's very cold." And without further hesitation he pops one in his mouth.

!!! It's so sweet, and creamy, but the mochi is cold and firm-!

"What kind of daifuku is it? Do you know?"

Keigo watches intently, suddenly realizing that the problem brought about by inexact magic could be not in the type of daifuku that appeared but in some terrible flaw with the contents of the package.

When Tonbokiri peels back the film, they look normal.

Tonbokiri is eating one like it's normal, if a little surprising for him.

They're safe!

"It's yukimi daifuku. That's ice cream inside."

(Tonbokiri is far too trusting, but he had no reason to distrust Keigo's magic either, even if it's the town helping.)

"Ice cream?!" That revelation is also met with surprise, and he appreciates what he is tasting even more. "Ice cream... doesn't it melt quickly? How do they wrap the mochi around it? It's so delicious..."

About to reach for a second one, Tonbokiri pauses and politely holds out the box.

"Would you like one, Asano-dono?"

[Kaoru jumps a little when there's a spark...then she stares.]

...is that a camera? [She's not sure???

She's going closer to check it out but like...wow. Wow.]

It's a camera! An old-fashioned one!

[That is not Keigo's greatest concern, though.]

How did I do that?

"I think they use a special type of mochi. And I guess if they keep everything cold while they're making it, it's not so bad." If he ever gets to go back home, he's paying more attention to the mochi ice cream making process.

If he really thought about it, Keigo would have to admit it feels rude to take someone's wish from them, but treats like this are rare enough that there's little chance of him saying no. Besides, hasn't the past month been rough and dragon-filled? He's earned it!

"I can't say no to that!" Keigo grabs one and takes a small bite, trying to savor it. "Thanks!"

Sharing certainly makes it better, somehow!
He's trying to savour them, but he also know that ice cream melts. How should he pace himself? Well, it's cold out, so he probably doesn't have to rush too hard.

"You are most welcome. Thank you for granting my wish! This was not the kind of daifuku I was expecting, but it is absolutely delicious. I would say you are a success as a fairy godmother. Will you be off to grant more wishes? Is there anything I can do for you in return before you go?"

He only sees brief flashes as Tonbokiri talks, but Keigo would swear Tonbokiri's tongue is especially white. Well, the daifuku is pretty creamy. Nothing unusual there.

"The thing I want the most right now is a way to warm up instantly," Keigo admits with a small laugh. In hindsight, eating ice cream wasn't the best choice in regards to this problem. If only his wand worked on his own wishes. "But I doubt you can do anything about that."

He chuckles a little at that, sympathizing with that wish.

"I'm afraid I can't. Not instantly, anyway. But... a fairy godmother's wish might. I don't have a dress, yet I could still give it a try?"

There's a tree from which he can pluck a branch...

Maybe you have some kind of secret power?

I think I would have noticed before now.

[Or would he? It took him a while to realizing he was really seeing spirits when that power crept up on him.]

Well, it wouldn't be a secret power if you knew about it!

[She lifts the black cloth.]

How do you even work one of these things...?

[asano_san]

You put that over your head so the light doesn't come through and then...

[You take the picture? There has to be something more.

He does not know that the something more entails.]

You take the picture. But I think it takes a long time so the people you're taking a picture of have to stand really still.

"Go ahead. Let's see what happens!"

Keigo feels a deep division in his heart. He has a personal investment in finding out the dress is required and he didn't wear it for nothing. He also wants to be warm.

Taking a branch from the tree (sorry), Tonbokiri then prepares himself to follow Asano's example.

"A way to warm up instantly..." He has no particular image in mind, but he earnestly hopes that something good will come of it as he waves the stick-- wand.

With a sad plop, something small, rectangular, and off-white falls to the ground between them.

"What is it?" Tonbokiri asks, bending down to look at the unremarkable thing. "I'm sorry. Perhaps I do need a dress to make the magic better."

(Keigo, however, will certainly recognize it as a heat pack. It's unwrapped though, and will only be warm for about three minutes. Enjoy your warmth, albeit shortlived.)
