[ so on the 3rd dave goes out and does a thing with some people and comes back and Lo And Behold, there are now pumpkins in the garden! ...almost. not quite. you can find him planting the magic seed in the gardens (why) on the 4th and about a week after that pumpkins will be a thing.

they have color. this is fantastic and great, obviously.

dave can be found in the middle of august twirling a knife and looking at some of the pumpkins contemplatively. while you can catch him at any of the above times, if you catch him in the middle of the month he'll say: ]

You know, I've never carved a pumpkin before.

OPEN: CAPTCHAROIDS

[ early on in the month dave will be carrying around his captcharoid camera for some godforsaken reason, and will occasionally pause to snap a picture of, like. you, your house, whatever you're doing, a flower...

it produces an instant picture every time, and he'll offer the thing to whoever you are. there's a captcha code on the back of every card, it's fascinating and dumb. don't you want it?

later in the month he'll have his actual camera, rescued last month. there's no instant photos here and he's a little less casual about it, being picky with his shots because film is a limited thing and he's careful with it. if you catch him then: ]

You know what ribbons would help? Ribbons that spat out film every week. [ he sounds vaguely rueful. ]

AUGUST 3RD: AIN'T GOT THYME FOR THIS (CLOSED: MINATO & IGNIS)

anyway, scene setting: dave invited ignis and minato along on an Adventure because the other month he'd promised to call minato along for backup next time although he doesn't anticipate much trouble just gathering plants. it's why john's not along, probably. plants are easy and boring and safe. ignis is the other co-leader-esque person in regards to the garden, so he seemed like a safe option to invite along also. you know, as you do.

that said, while they'd out gathering the bullshit guren asked for (dave's being careful about it despite casually referring to the plants as such) dave eventually pauses and cocks his head to the side, scanning the woods. ]

...I think we've got a tagalong. [ he's holding some weird fairy moss bullshit he's never seen before.

he probably shouldn't have just up and picked it up, this being the case, but that's what dave did. it's kind of sticky on his hands and he's been trying to shake it off for like. three minutes now. ]

[Plants are easy, boring and safe, and yet they're going into the woods, so is it really that safe... Minato's got some plants in hand as well (he also has no idea what they are, some sort of strange flower and some other odd mossy thing...?), but mostly he's just peering around curiously by the time Dave just...offers that up.

Some sort of monster...?

[He's coming closer to both Dave and Ignis instead of poking around in the bushes now, at least. He has at least that much sense.]

[Ignis is fond of both Dave and Minato, and so it's no real surprise that he'd volunteered to come along when asked about this little adventure. What's also no real surprise is that he's somehow ended up the mom of the group, or at the very least the designated chaperone, and Dave isn't the only one who's been quietly wary that there's something out there in Them Thar Woods™ before now.]

I'd hardly find it surprising. Let's keep moving, and see if we can't lead it in a circle; perhaps we'll be able to catch a glimpse of it first, before it decides to overtake us.

[ dave is still trying to shake the colorless stuff off of his hands. WHY DID HE TOUCH IT. THIS WAS A MISTAKE!!!!! and he should be more worried about the thing they want to lead in a circle, although he'd simply nodded to the plan and started walking.

waving his hands in larger circles does not dislodge the moss. this is terrible. ]

I don't know... Ichinose-san seems to manage to find a use for a lot of things though, so--

[He frowns vaguely at it all stuck to Dave's hands.]

[Focus more on the possible monster, kids! Of course, Minato's also going along willingly with the plan here, but. Yeah.]

David, keep swinging your arms like that and when that moss does dislodge, you're going to fling it wildly into the air to end up gods-only-knows-where. Quite possibly on one of our faces.

Also, naturally, he's the one who gets the moss to the face. To his credit, he doesn't make a noise, but he does flail a little as he reaches for it. It's stuck to his fringe of hair....and his face....and now his hand...

[NO WONDER HE CAME OUT HERE WITH THESE TWO, look at the disaster we have become already. Luckily, he's smart enough not to just run over and touch it himself, from trying to help, lest they all end up stuck together even more.]

...Dave, among the myriad of useful things you keep in your Armig— in your...personal holding space, would you happen to have any personal care products? Conditioner or hand cream, possibly?

I have some soap? [ he comes up with apple scented soap from the toiletries mission, and hands it over. ] That work?

[Yeah, Minato's just going to stand here as stoically as he can (which, all things considered, is pretty stoic, because that's what he Does), but there's a bit of a plaintive cast to his expression even so.

It's worth a shot, at least.

[He digs around in his pocket for a handkerchief,, then empties a little bit of the soap onto it and rubs it so that it'll soak in a bit, rather than moving around or spilling.

Then, starting with Minato's hand because it's probably the safest place to attempt, he wraps the soapy fabric around the base of his fingers and starts dragging them upward toward where the moss is sticking, hoping to neutralize some of the natural adhesive with the offset of the soap.]

Wiggle your fingers, please? As best you can.

[And obediently!! Minato wiggles his fingers, and the good news is that Ignis' efforts seem to be just the ticket; it's pretty easily scraped off of his fingers now that the stickiness is being quickly neutralized by that soap. Nice.

On the other hand...

It's through great effort of will that Minato does not immediately turn and ruin Ignis' work/get more sticky moss on himself when Dave says that.]

Some plants both move and have eyes; those ones typically come with acidic breath that could melt a small car.

A malboro is a large tentacled creature that's mostly mouth. Its breath is notoriously bad — and also highly dangerous for its acidic or poisonous properties.

[As he says it, he's automatically reaching into the Armiger for a magic flask, which appears in his hand and looks to be about the size of a softball — but he falls still mid-turn as he's coming around to take aim at their foe, because it...sure does appear to be waving, yes.]
