Event Eight.

he Town is quiet this week. No sudden quests on the forum post, no roars of werewolves in the distance... just peaceful, peaceful quiet. Of course, it's hot as hell right now, but that aside, it's pretty pleasant. You probably don't want to wander around the Town right now, but...

Naturally, now's when the Town is going to start thoroughly encouraging you to do just that.

You do want to find your doorway back home, don't you?

Better get searching! And don't mind the other worlds you might end up stumbling into first.

More than just someone living here, I mean. It...feels warm. Welcoming.

[ He's lived in places he'd never call home, but this feels like a place worthy of the title. Like a place where you could really be happy, and not just a roof over your head. ]

That's understandable. I think we've all seen a lot of people stumbling into places they weren't meant to be this week.

[ Without even meaning to, most of the time. It was why he'd spent so much time hanging around where the door to his own home had popped up - because if there was ever a place you didn't want people wandering into by accident, Hamel in the throes of destruction definitely fit the bill, and it was as nasty for any intruders as it was for him to have them show up.

But what Clark said before that...hm. ]

Is it too delicate a subject to ask about that civilization?

[ He'd lost his home, but this sounds like something on a different scale entirely. Hamel was small; in the grand scheme of things, most people never really knew it was gone. An entire civilization was something else altogether. ]

[ He lets her carry him for as long as she chooses to keep it up, because...it's not like anybody else is seeing it, and if there's anyone Joshua can trust to never use a moment like this for a cheap laugh or to win points in a petty argument, it's Estelle. Even in his darkest moments, she's never been anything less than a beacon of light and warmth, urging him back to safety.

And he doesn't want to let go of this closeness for even a second if he doesn't have to. ]

I...I never really expected that.

[ They'd all gotten along fine before he'd come along, after all - he'd figured that if he left, things would go just as well. Maybe better, without the specter of everything in his past to cast a shadow over them.

He hadn't expected to miss everyone so much, himself. ]

[ the horrible sound definitely makes Lupin jump - and as it goes on, his shoulders arch and his nose wrinkles in displeasure. It's like nails on a chalkboard ramped up to eleven!! (He's too cold to take his hands out of the blanket and cover his ears, though.)

The moment the screeching ends, he opens his mouth to ask the obvious question, but Cairngorm answers for him before he can get it out. ]

-- You take care of all that by yourself?

[ that sounds like a lot of work for one dainty rock person!! He looks impressed. ]

Good thinking, Minato. I'll take a bunch before we leave.

[ it's obvious that Lupin has zero qualms with stealing a bunch of stuff from this place, which probably isn't that surprising. It's true that he normally sticks to stealing from those who are undeserving, but... well, nobody else is going to eat that candy. It might just disappear after a week when they bring it home, anyway. Might as well seize this opportunity. ]

So? Did you bake, or were you just the man behind the counter?

[ He's halfway expecting her to ask him to let her come home with him, himself - but he supposes that might still feel too bold for her. (He planned on saying yes, naturally.) Elizabeth's distaste for her home is clear as day, and given what he knows about her past, he can't say he blames her. If he'd been kept in a cage his whole life, he'd want to fly free, too. ]

You will, [ Lupin replies confidently. ] Maybe I don't know how we're going to get out of this yet... But I can promise you that you won't have to go back there.

[ it probably sounds like hot air, but he really means it. Not because she's cute or nice or because they're friends - although all of those reasons certainly factor in, too - but because her situation is unjust, and it's simply not his style to overlook that. ]

You remember that?

[ Lupin is indeed surprised. From his point of view, it was ages ago, but for someone like Cairngorm, he supposes it was hardly a metaphorical heartbeat ago. Once they mention it, the details start coming back a little bit. ]

Yeah, that was her. She's a friend of mine. [ a beat. ] By the way, I've changed my mind about you since then. You're very charming.

[ they reach the end of the hallway, and Lupin pushes open a door, revealing a brightly-lit open courtyard in the center of the mansion (minus vampire child.) It's clearly lovingly tended, with a variety of healthy, colorful flowers painstakingly organized and blooming beautifully. There are even a few butterflies flitting around. A bench sits in the garden, as well, and there's something curled up underneath it - the resident tripod corgi, Sisi, sleeping in the shade. ]

[ wholesome, indeed... Lupin looks on, crossing his arms and shaking his head with a helpless smile. ]

Looks like he likes you. Being chosen by Sisi is a big honor, you know.

[ he only likes lupin and cardia and tolerates everyone else at best... ]

[ they sure do not have his clothes, and dextera isn’t even sure that the archangel’s belongings would be here in this town—he’s never seen them. ]

I just… want you to understand. What I see.

[ he can’t explain it in words—he couldn’t explain it to guren, he couldn’t explain it to anyone, and so all he can do is hope that shiho will see and understand why he has so much trouble disbelieving this man. ]

She's pretty bossy. [Even as he says it there's a strange little fondness there.] She is used to coordinating stuff though, I think. She was leading a treasure-hunting expedition when we met up again later in my timeline. On the other hand...sometimes she does stuff for her own reasons. It's hard to say how Vriska will feel about anything on any given days. It used to drive me crazy.

[He shakes his head.] I haven't really been "home" for a couple of years. Plus I like this place better than where I was before I got here. It doesn't hurt that one of my best friends is here, too. That probably helps.

[ Ryo supposes it's a vacation from the shithole police state that is his world, but he'd rather be there and observe how the impending war is going to play out. Also, Akira Fudo is there and that alone makes it preferable to being at the whims of a strange town that does Weird and Unpredictable Shit every month. ]

My apartment. Not the most interesting place in the world, but it's nice to be somewhere familiar. It's a shame most of the books are too blurry to read—I was hoping to bring back some scientific literature.

Yeah, it's definitely both of those things. You sure can't fault whoever named this place for their commitment to accuracy.

So, aside from these literally super cool fountains, what else is there to see?

[Careful, Sora. Someone might not believe you if you talk too much about how much he's changed. That little shove earns a bit of a frown at first, but he knows his best friend is just trying to reassure him.

Besides, a second head? That gets him an eye rolls and a laugh.] Have you been to some of the worlds we've seen? Anything's possible, Sora.

Yeah. You and Kairi have both mentioned it, though haven't given me details.

[Acknowledgement of feelings? What's that?]

Good. And besides... [He lowers his voice and tone, whispering in her ear.]

You can't leave me alone with Sora. You know how much trouble he gets himself into.

Yeah. Everyone else would normally be in that chamber you saw before, so...

[ They watch dully as the glaciers in the distance turn up a bunch of snow from the ground, even as the sun comes out from behind a cloud, giving the illusion of warmth. The change in the landscape is gradual as the new light stretches across the tundra, but no less beautiful, the icy blues and purples of the frozen sea glinting and illuminated in a prettier way than the overcast gray from before. ]

Is that surprising to you?

[ They don't look at him, busying themself with staring at the brightening skyline. ]

[ Why is he so embarrassing... that's definitely not a word that's ever been used to describe them, so they turn their face away (VERY SUBTLY), half embarrassed and half annoyed— if they just. Don't engage, then they won't have to acknowledge what he said at all.

Thankfully they don't have to wallow in it for very long since there are much more pressing matters: such as the vast array of colors that flood their sight the second he pushes open the doors. It's not an overexaggeration to say that this is the most life they've ever seen accumulated in one place, given the humble nature of their own world's flora and fauna. Truthfully, it's like no spring they've ever seen.

They take a few steps into the courtyard, wide-eyed and curious about all the life around them— it's almost overwhelming, in the sense that they don't know what to look at first. So they draw their eyes to something they can learn about concretely, that little...Something, under the bench. He's not like any dog they've ever seen or read about, so they can't even really be sure that he is one, despite Lupin mentioning one living here before. ]

What... is that?

[ A decoration? Or something living? Maybe they'll be able to tell if they get a bit closer. ]

...You could say that.

[He doesn't even want to jump into this, really. But, considering how many vampires he knows are here, maybe he can shorten it a tiny bit.] Which ones did you meet?

[ Now that's more the reaction he was hoping for when Cairngorm came to visit him. He's always the one being amazed by Cairn's stories of their home; it feels nice to show them something amazing from his own, for once. Lupin hangs back a little bit, resting his hands on his hips, watching them stare around at everything.

This actually does remind him of Cardia. He'd gotten to see her with a similar expression of wonderment plenty of times when he brought her to Steel London from her little prison home in Wales. Cairngorm is less naive, and certainly less enthusiatic - yet there's something compelling about drawing even an understated reaction out of them.

(In his mind, he can almost hear Impey teasingly accusing him of having a type...) ]

That? That's Sisi. He's a dog - he lives here with us. As you can see, he spends more time lazing around than earning his keep, though.

[ a big honor, is it? dextera can understand that. people—or animals—who have been traumatized like this find it hard to open up, and dextera sympathizes with anyone’s reluctance to do so. he’s thankful to be licked, but he does have to pull back eventually. he wipes his hand on his shirt. ]

I like him, too.

[ The way he talks is so strange, because it really makes it hard to believe his youthful face. It occurs to her that she might ask Mr. Wayne how old Damian is. Just to be sure. Considering some of the strange things she's heard about the people here, she wouldn't be that surprised if he truly were an old man trapped in a boy's body...

But it's an idle thought, since she listens quite attentively. It's all abstract and hard for her to really understand, and she knows it. That also brings with it a strange feeling. It's the disconnect that reminds her how separate from the world she's truly been, since it doesn't seem like it's purely a difference in time. She twirls her thimble thoughtfully, but she tries not to feel too sad about the distance she feels from his words.

It ends up being easier than she expects, though.

The rational explanation shifts to something a little more emotional, and with it, her self-pity all but evaporates. She looks at Damian sympathetically for a moment, but it turns to a softer smile as she stops fidgeting and instead nods to him. This is probably the exact moment she decided to make him a flowercrown. ]

I don't know about that. We've been talking, right?

[ She considers reaching out to him, and though she's not sure how he'll respond, it still seems like the right thing to do. She's gentle, but Elizabeth places a hand on his shoulder in support. ]

I consider you a friend of mine, Damian.

I wonder how many people that would actually be.

[ that may seem kind of out of left field, but he'll elaborate instead of being vague. ]

I've theorized with someone else before that the people that get pulled to Chroma are those with circumstances that will make them more inclined to stay here. Apparently the town is a more appealing option for quite a few.

[ a beat. normally he's not that nosy when it comes to other people's personal business, but he's been curious about how correct his theory is, so: ]

Is it the same for you?

Something like that. Let's just say I wouldn't trust two of myself in a confined space.

[ with all his self-loathing and self-destructive issues, it's a really bad idea. he already came very close to breaking hal once.

all of this is kind of a moot point though. ]

But for what it's worth, he eventually did end up gaining a body and the freedom to move around as he pleased.

[ yeah, switched to 'he' there because arquiusprite is... half an alien troll and less only a program. ]

[ he's taking note of that fondness, it's... interesting. clearly vriska had seemed plenty capable, but just not the sort of person that was particularly well-liked from what he's gathered so far. ]

Sounds accurate. [ from the impression he got. ] Were you two close?
