[It was an accident, mostly. John had reviewed the quests on the board and read up on who partnered with who, but he didn't put a lot of thought into some of them. Sharing memories was already hard enough with some people, but doing it with people he didn't even know as well? That sounded like a recipe for disaster and not something he was interested in.

It's why he was out and about doing his own thing, goofing off and floating aimlessly through the town. He's distracted, mostly, and it's why he doesn't notice Joshua below him and gently collides his foot into his head. He jerks back in surprise, floating upward a little higher before looking at him again.]

Dude, sorry! You good?

JAKE, QUEST 12

[You know what's better than letting Jake wrestle him? Wrestling with invisible sheep. That's a lot better and it's why John's eager to actually attempt this quest. It doesn't hurt that he's kind of viewing it as a weird kind of family bonding thing. He messages Jake and meets him in Flavo, standing on the ground for once as he impatiently waits for Jake to come out of the house.]

This is going to sound dumb, but do you even know what a sheep looks like? [It's partially teasing, but also, Jake's from a tropical monster island. You never know.]

[He's never spoken to Kei. He doesn't even know the guy, actually, but sometimes John figures strangers are just friends he hasn't met yet and it's why he marches up to Kei the moment he spots him alone in the town.

Positivity? What's more positive than making a friend?]

[Striders and positivity are a weird kind of balance, maybe, but that's not going to stop John from trying. It's maybe by sheer luck that he happens to figure out where Dirk lives over in Ruga…and by sheer luck, most likely he's walking around outside and spots Dirk on his own. He perks up a little, surprisingly pleased to see the other Strider and he immediately wanders over to join him.]

Your house isn't that far from ours. Dave never actually told me that.

IZUKU, QUEST 14

[One of the people he can always count on for a friendly boost of energy is Izuku. It's hard not to like the guy and he messages him sometime in the middle of the day asking him to meet up by the well. By the time Izuku gets there, he's hovering in the air and he has…a deck of cards in his hand??? John, what are you up to…]

[Hello plastic bag drifting through the wind person who Kei hasn't really met yet. You'd think glasses friend would make him a little more excited, but unfortunately, Kei's face is plastered with seriousness wherever he goes.]

I have, yes. [It doesn't take very long for him to get it.] You wish to go on a quest together? A very bold move...

[ striders and positivity just don't mix well. or rather, they don't know how to deal with having any kind of positivity leveled at them and would rather nope the fuck out. so it's a good thing that dirk is completely oblivious to john's intentions when he's spotted returning home after having caught some fish by him.

at the sound of a familiar voice, he turns around to face it from where he'd been about to open his door. ]

Hey, John. Yeah, it's like a five-minute distance at most.

[ and cue a tiny awkward pause before he throws out this offer: ]

Uh, do you wanna come in? I was going to prepare some lunch.

[For a second, Izuku's distracted by the hovering while he makes note of it--because it's a power and how can he not. Then, he's snapping back to attention sheepishly.]

Ah... I don't know? I guess I wasn't too bad at playing the matching game--but that requires two card decks.

[He knows of certain card games, but the only one you can really play by yourself is the matching one, so... alas.]

You really think it's that bold? [That wasn't the response he was expecting but okay, sure, he can roll with that.] But yes! Or at least try to accomplish one of them. Are you up for it?

[Good, let's just keep Dirk unaware of everything...but John tilts his head slightly, glancing first at the fish and then at Dirk again before he shrugs. That'll work.]

If you don't mind? I'm actually pretty bad with doing much with fish that isn't grilling it. Call it a learning experience. [A beat.] Plus it'd be kind of cool to hang out a little?

Matching game? [Izuku...buddy...that's really sad. But John just grins anyway before he shuffles the cards in mid-air.]

Anyway there's plenty of games you can do with one deck and two people. I thought it would be kind of fun to take a break and play a few hands.

<sub>[ You know, he's still a little chaffed they haven't had a chance to duke it out but he can't stay too sore at John, not at all. Not when he's been so helpful, encouraging and nice. Having John around has been just swell. Though, their first task together seemed a bit silly, Jake would be lying if he said he wasn't game for a little bullshit, and the thought of aimlessly hopping around to locate some invisible sheep seems like just the thing he'd love to do with John.

[ he's nodding pretty much immediately, definitely down to hang because they haven't really done that before and he would like to get to know john better. ]

I don't mind. Fish is about the only thing I know how to decently prepare in different ways so I can show you that, no problem.

[ he motions for john to follow him as he opens his door. the moment he sets a foot inside, there's a loud robotic voice exclaiming "YO D-STRIZZLE!!" and dirk boredly responds as he steps aside to let john in. ]

Simmer down, man. We've got company.

[ dirk's home is pretty utilitarian, but there's some notable splashes of color like squarewave who is coming over to greet them like an overexcited puppy, lil cal chilling on the couch, some sbahj plushes on a shelf, and a shitty sord resting against a wall. ]

Yes, well, a lot of good that will do us when they're invisible. [But he's happy that Jake's in a good mood and he gestures for him to follow. To the woods they go!] If they're invisible to the eye though that doesn't mean they're invisible to touch. Their wool is probably really soft.

...do we have anything to sheer them with though?

[Into the house he goes and he immediately jerks back at the loud voice. He wasn't expecting a greeting and even when Dirk responds apathetically he's just going from "WHAT THE FUCK" down to "what the fuck?

It's non-cluttered in a way his and Dave's house isn't what with captcharoids, art, and random bullshit they've collected. It's interesting to think about but at the same time he's eyeing the robot, the puppet, and the plushes. Lord. It really is a dweeby version of Dave's bro.]

What's with the robot? [He eyes Squarewave but there's a tentative wave. Hello there.]

Joshua doesn't actually make any noise in reaction, despite getting kicked in the head. Suppressing those kinds of reactions has been drilled into him for long enough that it's still a habit when he's not thinking too hard about not letting it be, and he's not really in that state of mind himself.

He looks up, rubbing his head, and doesn't seem hurt or upset so much as...sheepish. He really should've seen that coming! ]

I'm fine, don't worry. Used to putting up with a lot worse than that.

I'm not sure if I should be grateful to hear that or even more concerned. [Annnd he'll float down, his own expression equally sheepish before recognition flickers across his face.] Joshua, right?

That's a good idea. [Why didn't he think of that?? Right, because he's not used to having anything useful in his stupid sylladex. But he's going to sort through and suddenly at least four knives just kind of fall out of his 'dex and on the ground by his feet.

[He's so cute wtf Kami. But John's own grin brightens and he slowly lowers himself down to the ground.]

Have you ever heard of Crazy Eights? It's a little competitive but it's fun because you never know who's going to win. [Also he's better at that than poker, so.]

I haven't, but I'm sure I'll pick it up fast enough if you explain it!

[Izuku plops down onto the ground, following John's example, and leans forward to watch whatever demonstration John's going to do for this. The most eager student!]

fortunately dirk is quick to intervene, suppressing both a sigh and the urge to facepalm. ]

No, he's not. Go on, take this to the kitchen.

[ he's handing the fish to squarewave and shooing him off before he turns back to john and closes the door behind them. ]

That's Squarewave. He's one of my rapbots. Don't mind him, he's just overly enthusiastic.

[Shuffling, shuffling...and there! He passes out eight cards for each of them before flipping a card (two of diamonds) and setting the rest of the pile face down.]

So, the point of the game is to get rid of all the cards in your hand before the other person. [He taps the two.] You can match by either suit or by number, but you can only lay down one card at a time. If you don't have any cards in your hand that matches, you draw from the draw pile until you do. And if you have an eight, you can play it no matter what and change the suit to whatever you want. Does that make sense? So like...[He moves to lay down the nine of diamonds.] That would be a match.

[aaaAAAAHHHH?? He doesn't quite step back but he's giving Squarewave a very confused look as his eyebrows knit together, trying to figure out what's going on here.]

I can see that. [He watches Squarewave wander off.] You made him? Where'd he even come from?
